Abstract

Background Diarrhea is the leading cause of high morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries such as Indonesia. Diarrhea can be caused by bacterial infections. Guava leaves and kencur have astringent properties that can help reduce the frequency of bowel movements and stop diarrhea. Aim: The study aims to determine the most effective dose concentration of a combination of guava leaf ethanol extract (PGEE) and kencur rhizome ethanol extract (KGEE) as an antidiarrheal medicine. Methods: The study used an experimental method with stages of simplisia preparation, extract preparation by maceration, simplisia characteristics, phytochemical screening, and antidiarrheal efficacy testing using 25 male mice divided into 5 groups, namely F1 = negative control (NaCMC); F2 = positive control (Loperamide); F3, F4, and F5 were combinations (PGEE:KGEE) with 3 different dose concentrations, namely (25%:75%); (50%:50%), and (75%:25%), where the base doses used were (PGEE=400mg/kg/BW) and (KGEE=27.5mg/kgBW). Results: The parameters observed included the onset time of diarrhea, duration, frequency of bowel movements, and stool consistency. Statistical data analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test with the help of SPSS software. Statistical analysis with Tukey's post hoc test showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in fecal weight between the treatment group and the negative control group. Conclusion: The dose concentration (50%:50%) showed the most significant effect in reducing fecal weight comparable to loperamide, so that the combination of PGEE and KGEE at that dose concentration proved to be the most effective in reducing fecal weight and overcoming diarrhea, both visually (graph) and based on statistical analysis results.

Abstract

Balakka (Phyllanthus emblica L) is a wild plant, commonly used as a cooking spice called holat. The stem of balakka is believed to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins that have antibacterial properties. Most previous studies have focused on the fruit and leaves of balakka. On the other hand, Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria are normal flora on human skin that cause infections. The increasing resistance of these bacteria to antibiotics makes it important to find alternative natural antibacterial agents. The purpose of this study was to examine the antibacterial activity of balakka stem extract and cream against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria and to evaluate the physical quality of the cream. This study used experimental methodology. The maceration method used ethanol p.a. on 100 g of balakka stem simplisia. The stages included phytochemical screening, cream formulation with concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3%, and physical quality tests (organoleptic, homogeneity, emulsion type, pH, viscosity, stability, and irritation). Antibacterial tests were carried out using the agar well diffusion method on extracts and cream preparations. The results showed that 19.30 g of thick extract was obtained, which was positive for alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. The resulting cream met physical quality standards, was homogeneous, had an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type, a pH of 5.3–6.2, was stable, and did not cause irritation. The antibacterial activity of the extract showed inhibition zones of 14.5 mm (100 mg/ml), 11.5 mm (75 mg/ml), and 8.5 mm (50 mg/ml), while the cream showed 5.5 mm (1%), 7.5 mm (2%), and 9.5 mm (3%). Thus, ethanol extract of balakka stems has potential as an antibacterial agent and can be formulated into a safe cream that meets physical quality standards.

Abstract

Curry leaves (Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng) is a plant that is often used in cooking spices that are high in fat because curry leaves contain secondary metabolite compounds such asalkaloids, glycosides, and flavonoids that serve to inhibit the growth of free radicals and lower cholesterol levels. Generally curry leaves are processed traditionally in a simple form, while research will process curry leaves in the form of fermented beverages in the form of kombucha tea. This study aims to explore the process of making curry leaf kombucha tea and know the antihiperlipidemia effect. This research is descriptive and experimental, including material collection, simplisia making, phytochemical screening, fermentation of curry leaf kombucha, evaluation of dosage quality, testing of triglyceride levels in rats with Electrode-Based Biosensor technique. The mice used in this study were 25 and divided into 5 test groups. K1 (negative blank), K2 (Simvastatin), K3 (dose 100 ml), K4 (dose 150 ml), K5 (dose 200 ml) induced using 80% egg yolk and PTU 0.2%. The results showed that the quality evaluation of kombucha tea gave good results to pH 3.08-3.44 and did not experience changes in taste and smell. In the group of 5 doses of 200 ml with kombucha tea administration on the 7th to 15th day, it was shown that cholesterol levels decreased from 253.0 mg/dL to 92.2 ml/dL where these results were close to comparing (simvastatin) from 247.8 mg/dL to 79.2 mg/dL
