Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Aloe vera (AV) contains a variety of characteristic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory components that have potential advantages for periodontal disease therapy. Diagnostic and prognostic markers of periodontal disease through the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in gingival crevicular fluid. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of giving AV gel on alkaline phosphatase levels in rats with bacteria-induced periodontitisMethod: Thirty-six male Sprague dawley were healthy and active, weighing 170-200 grams, aged 2 months were distinguished into two groups: the control group of periodontitis given therapy Gel Metronidazole plus 25% and AV gel 99.03% as a treatment group. Aloe vera gel is administered topically in gingival sulcus at a dose of 300 mg/kg of rat weight. Samples were taken from gingival sulcus liquid on days 1, 2 and 3 using periopaper paper. Alkaline phosphatase levels are measured using a UV/Vis Spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 405 nm. Variant analysis is used to compare ALP levels in different groupsResult: There was significant difference in alkaline phosphatase levels between the control group and the treatment group (p>0.05). In Sprague dawley rats with periodontitis, there was a significant decrease in ALP levels on days 1, 2 and 3 given Metronidazole gel plus 25% therapy and AV gel 99.03%. But the treatment group showed lower ALP levels than the control groupConclusion: This study revealed that the use of AV gel locally has an effect and can be as an adjunct therapy for periodontitis

Abstract

Background: Riskesdas data in 2018 showed a 57.6% dental and oral problems prevalence. One of the abnormalities of the teeth and mouth is malocclusion. Malocclusion can be fixed by performing orthodontic treatments performed by orthodontist dentists. However, because orthodontic care requires a considerable cost, those with low economy and education look for alternatives by performing orthodontic treatments to dental artisans. Objectives: This study evaluates the patient's quality of life (QoL) with fixed orthodontic treatment by dental artisans (denturists) using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Methods: The research method used is descriptive observational, where samples are taken by random sampling of the 67 patients who used fixed orthodontic treatment by denturists. This research applied a cross-sectional study conducted by collecting data only using the OHIP-14 questionnaire at a time without further investigation. The data analysis applied was the Univariate Statistical test. Results: The results of the total score obtained from the dimensions of functional limitations are 238 (moderate category), physical pain is 220 (moderate category), psychological discomfort is 205 (moderate category), physical disability is 232 (moderate category), psychological disability is 225 (moderate category), social disabilities is 230 (moderate category), the barriers is 246 (bad category). Conclusion: Several factors caused denturists' impaired QoL of patients in fixed orthodontic treatment, with six as moderate categories and one as poor.

Abstract

Background: The use of fixed orthodontics is not a new thing for the community. The rapidly increasing information has changed people's understanding of the use of fixed orthodontic appliances where the initial function of fixed is for health, but along with changes in one's knowledge, the use of fixed orthodontics has turned into a style or trend that aims to make the appearance more attractive. Most of the youth are currently doing fixed orthodontic treatment only for a lifestyle, trend or style without knowing the complaints and goals of fixed orthodontic treatment. In addition, most teenagers do not know the orthodontic treatment that should be carried out by orthodontic specialist dentists. This study aims to specifythe description of adolescents aged 14-18 years in SMA Negeri 1 Belitang, South Sumatra province regarding the side effects of using orthodontic appliances.Method: This is a descriptive observational using a cross sectional study. The sampling technique used is total sampling with a total of 50 respondents.Result: The results of the study revealed that adolescents' knowledge of the side effects of using fixed orthodontic appliances was in the good category of 13 subjects (26%), sufficient category 29 subjects (58%), and less category 8 subjects (16%).Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the knowledge possessed by adolescents aged 14-18 years at SMA Negeri 1 Belitang, South Sumatra Province regarding the side effects of using orthodontic appliances is quite good in as many as 29 subjects(58%).

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health refers to the condition of the oral cavity and periodontal tissues being free from disease and pain. Optimal function of these structures indicates good oral health. Dental and oral health status can be expressed by the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease, assessed through indices such as def-t/DMF-T, OHI-S, and Gingival Index. This study aimed to determine the levels of def-t/DMF-T, OHI-S, and Gingival Index, and to describe the overall dental and oral health status among students with intellectual disabilities at Grobogan State Special SchoolMethod: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a non-experimental, cross-sectional approach to describe existing conditions through direct observation. A total of 52 students with intellectual disabilities were included using a total sampling technique.Result: DMF-T/def-t examination showed unsatisfactory findings, with the highest proportion of respondents categorized as very high (30.77%) and high (21.15%). The OHI-S examination indicated a moderate level, with most respondents (44.23%) falling within this category. The Gingival Index revealed generally good results, with the largest proportion categorized as normal (46.15%).Conclusion: Highest percentages of OHI-S and Gingival Index were found among students with moderate physical intellectual disabilities, while the highest def-t/DMF-T scores (very high category) were found among those with sensory intellectual disabilities
