Abstract

Abstract

Poor oral health has been reported to correlate to the body mass index (BMI) of the overweight and the obesity groups. These has yet widely studied in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to analysed the oral health, socioeconomy factors (FSE) and the BMI in the seemingly healthy university students in Kediri aged 18-21 years old. This cross-sectional study was conducted amongst male and female students of IIKBW, Kediri, Indonesia (n=150). We analysed their BMI from the body weight and height (kg/m2). Their oral health was determined by the DMFT index (decayed missing filled teeth index), the stimulated salivary flow rate (SSFR) and the gingival index (GI). FSE studied include father's highest education and monthly income, tooth brushing frequency in a day and dental floss habitual use. Data was analysed using SPSS 17 with level of significance of p<0.05. No significant differences in BMI, DMFT index, SSFR and GI respectively (p=0.411;p=0.037, p=0.880, p=0.142) between male and female groups. No significant corelation BMI with DMFT index, SSFR and GI, respectively (p=0.340, p=0.420, p=0,446). FSE are not significantly correlated to either the BMI, DMFT index, SSFR orGI (p > 0.05). There were 41.8% of males and 57.8% of females have "bad” score of DMFT and 98.6% of males and 92.1% of females have "bad” score of GI; 4.1% of males and 2.6% of females have low score of SSFR.Although we found no significant differences in the BMI and oral health parameters between genders, in the seemingly healthy young adults oral health hygiene could be compromised as found in the current study indicated by bad scores of DMFT, SSFR or GI. Here we found that either BMI or FSE was not significantly correlated to any of oral health parameters measured in the current study.

Abstract

Perception of oral hygiene has a major impact on life expectancy worldwide, but in middle-income countries it is a problem, where oral health problems in Indonesia affect as much as 57.6% of the population. A semi-experimental study was conducted on February 21, 2025 on students at SMAN 1, SMAN  2, and Pondok Pesantren Mathlabul Ulum Jambu in Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The study method was carried out offline (face-to-face) using a mixture of presentation media (power point) and booklets. The socialization participants were divided into two parts: pre-socialization (pre-test) and post-socialization (post-test). The socialization participants were given questions to assess their knowledge and perceptions of oral health before and after the socialization. Participants' knowledge was classified as sufficient, moderate, and low in understanding oral hygiene before and after the socialization. The average score for participants before the socialization was 60.66, and after the socialization it was 86.71. These results were significantly different with a p-value of 0.000 using the Wilcoxon statistical test. These data show that there is a positive role for dentists in improving dental and oral health in the environment of high school students so that dentists can play an active role in encouraging patients to pay more attention to dental and oral health awareness, especially for SMAN 1 and 2 in Sumenep Regency, East Java.

Abstract

Background: Avulsion is a complex trauma characterized by the loss of a tooth from its socket. An avulsion condition requires immediate replantation to return the tooth to its socket. The success of this action is influenced by the viability of the fibroblast cells. One of the measures to maintain viability is to store avulsed teeth in storage media. Avocado seed (Persea Americana Mill) is a plant that is easily available and contains flavonoids and saponins which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Avocado seed extract is known to play a role in wound healing by increasing the number of fibroblast cells. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of avocado seed extract (Persea Americana Mill) in maintaining the viability of avulsed tooth fibroblast cells in male Wistar rats. Methods: The sample used was 24 Wistar rat teeth extracted and divided into 2 groups, 1 control group and 1 treatment group, where each group was divided into 2 subgroups based on soaking time, namely 30 and 60 minutes. Furthermore, fibroblast cells in the periodontal ligament are trypsinated and then counted with a hemocytometer on a light microscope. The data were then tested using SPSS 24 software. Results: There was a significant difference in the amount of fibroblast cell viability in immersion using avocado seed extract and HBSS. Conclusion: Soaking using HBSS for 30 minutes produced the best fibroblast cell viability.
