Abstract

Juni 2013. Kata kunci: Bayam merah, hipokampus, timbal asetatEffect of Red Spinach (Amaranthus gangeticus) Extract on Hippocampus Morphology of Post-Weaning Mice Infant Model from Lead-Acetate Exposed Pregnant Mice Antioxidants in red spinach (Amaranthus gangeticus) extract are proposed to combat the toxicity of lead acetate in the central nervous system. The effect of red spinach extract to the morphology of post weaning mouse hippocampus model (Mus musculus) in pregnant mice that received oral lead acetate during pregnancy was analyzed. Twenty seven post-weaning mice offsprings were grouped into 3 groups: M0 (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or CMC Na 0.5%), M1 (CMC Na 0.5%+lead acetate 1.16 mg/10 g of body weight/day) and M2 (CMC Na 0.5%+lead acetate 1.16 mg/10 g of body weight/day+red spinach extract 382.2 mg/10 g of body weight/day). Brains were histologically processed and stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE). Width of stratum granulare (SG) of the dentate gyrus (GD) and each of stratum oriens-pyramidale (SOP) of CA1, CA2, CA3 from each mouse hippocampus were obtained and analyzed statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference (LSD) (p<0.05). The CA1 and CA2 SOPs in M2 were significantly wider compared to those of M1 (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the SOP of CA1 in M2 was significantly wider compared to that of M0 (p=0.001). The SG width of GD and the CA3 SOP in M2 were wider than those of M0 and M1 (p>0.05). In conclusion, red spinach extract might dampen the adverse effects of oral lead acetate in post-weaning mouse hippocampus model from pregnant mice orally exposed to lead acetate during pregnancy. Abstract

We explored association between the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and uric acid (UA) to the middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) amongst seemingly healthy university students in Kediri, Indonesia aged 17-23 years (n=150); no history of major previous diseases were found (i.e. metabolic syndrome). TC and UA measured from the capillary blood; standardised anthropometry measurements were done by trained medical doctors. Correlation, linear regression, independent t-test or Mann-Whitney analysis were performed with the level of significance of p<0.05. We found higher TC (p=0.053), UA (p<0.001), MUAC (p=0.009), HC (p=0.865) and WC (p=0.001) among males than among females. TC was significantly correlated to the UA with prevalence of hypercholesterolemia of 46.7% and hyperuricemia of 30% of all participants. All anthropometry was significantly correlated to the TC and UA among males (p<0.001); TC and UA were strongly corresponded to all anthropometry parameters among males. Hypercholesterolemia and hyperuricemia could be found amongst the seemingly healthy young adults in Indonesia; among males these are strongly correlated to the higher MUAC, WC and HC. Daily physical activity and proper healthy diet might help to decrease these cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Abstract

Abstract

Overweight and obesity have been correlated to the higher risk for developing metabolic diseases in later life, i.e. DM type 2. We study the body mass index (BMI), the waist to hip ratio (WHR) and the fasting blood glucose levels (FBG) in the seemingly healthy male and female university students to comprehend these variables amongst the youth in Indonesia in 2019. The BMI and WHR of 150 male and female students aged 18-22 years old of the IIKBW, Kediri were measured by standardised anthropometry. The FBG was measured after 8 hours-minimum of fasting from the capillary blood drop using glucometer. Data was then analysed using SPSS 17 with level of significance of p<0.05. According to Asia-Pacific BMI classification, students were 30.7% obese with males significantly higher than females (p=0.016), 18% overweight (significantly higher in females, p=0.04), 36% normal and 15.3% underweight. When compared between genders, the WHR is significantly higher in males (p<0.001); whilst no significant differences in FBG (p=0.6). Four males and 5 females with FBG ≥ 100 mg/dl, whereas others were within normal limits. There are positive significant correlations between BMI and WHR in males and females (r=0.777, p<0.001; r=0.54, p<0.001, respectively). There is a significant positive correlation between the BMI and FBG with r=0.217, p=0.008; and between the WHR and FBG with r=0.21, p=0.01 amongst all students. In this study, male students have significantly higher BMI and WHR than females. Higher FBG was well observed in students with either higher BMI or WHR.

Abstract

Dentigerous cysts are cysts of the epithelial lining of the jaws derived from the dental follicle of unerupted teeth. These cysts are often found during routine radiographic examination along with unerupted teeth. Dentigerous cysts are usually asymptomatic unless the size becomes large, thus causing swelling. This case report describes the management of dentigerous cyst in the upper left canine region with canine impaction to the orbital floor. Dentigerous cyst was treated with cyst enucleation but the impacted canine was not taken because of the magnitude of risk that can occur which was a disruption to the eye muscle. Conclusion. Treatment of dentigerous cysts can be performed by enucleation technique and management related the impacted tooth at the orbital floor needs a further evaluation consideration.

Abstract

Background: Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition when food that had been ingested moves back up from the stomach to the esophagus periodically, causing heartburn. GERD cases that are followed up by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) can be diagnosed as Non-Erosive Reflux Disease (NERD) if there are no findings of mucosal damage at the esophagus. Objective: The objective is to study the overall prevalence of GERD and NERD patients on January until December of 2015, categorizing them according to age groups, gender, grade of esophageal mucosal damage according to Los Angeles grading, and also other EGD findings. Material and method: This is a descriptive research using secondary data collected from patients' medical record. Patients that are diagnosed as GERD or NERD are included as sample. Data are collected and processed by Microsoft Office Excel 2007. Result: A total of 122 medical records were collected, with 116 GERD patients and 6 NERD patients. There was increase of prevalence of GERD patients shown following the increase of age groups, while prevalence of NERD patients between age groups fluctuate. Both GERD and NERD patients are dominated by women, that is 62 patients (53.4%) and 5 patients (83.3%) respectively, compared to male, that is 54 GERD patients and 1 NERD patient. According to Los Angeles grading, the patients are mostly categorized as grade A (14.7%). However, there were 88 unclassified cases found so the result arguably needed a bigger sample and/ or data written in the medical record might not be clearly stated. The most dominant EGD finding in GERD patients was erosive gastritis (24.8%). Conclusion: There were 95% GERD patients and 5% NERD patients discovered in this study. The profile of GERD patients in this case was dominantly found in the age group of more than 50 years old, women, grade A, and with erosive gastritis in the EGD findings. The profile of NERD patients was not specific to a certain age group, but mostly found in women.
