Abstract

This research aimed to know the influence of visualization strategy towards students' reading comprehension on narrative text. The writer used quantitative method and categorized the research as quasi experimental method. The population was 246 from 8 classes. The writer used Cluster Random Sampling Technique in taking the sample. There were 2 classes as a sample. X1 was an experiment class and X2 was a control class. The experiment class consisted of 32 students and control class consisted of 34 students. The main technique in measuring students’ reading comprehension was multiple choice which consisted of 40 items with 5 options a, b, c, d and e. The score of each item is 2,5 for correct answer. In calculating the data analysis, the writer used t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, the average score of experimental class was 81,94 and the average score of control class was 73,25 which means the average score of experimental class was higher than control class. The writer got that Ha was accepted. It was obtained that ttest = 3,73 and ttable 0,05 = 2,00 and 0,01 = 2,66 (3,73 > 2,00 < 2,66). It means that there was a significant influence of Visualization strategy towards students’ reading comprehension on narrative text at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 8 Bandar Lampung in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research aimed to define the types of maxims that are flouted in the Batman movie, to disclose and explain the implicature behind the characters' conversations, and to describe the reason for maxim flouting by the characters in the movie. Descriptive qualitative methodology was used in conjunction with a pragmatic approach in the current research. The research data were utterances containing maxim flouting spoken by characters in Batman: Under the Red Hood. The movie dialogues served as the context for the inquiry. This study's data source was the film Batman: Under the Red Hood. The data was gathered by downloading, watching, and then collecting the movie. The data is analyzed by categorizing it into several categories, such as maxim flouting, analyzing it, confirming or validating that the data is accurate, and then coming to a conclusion. The data were triangulated by consulting with the lecturers and applying theoretical triangulation to assure their trustworthiness. The results of the research are as follows. First, all types of maxim flouting are found in the movie. Second, the maxim of conversation flouted by the characters has implied meaning. Third, there are various reasons why the flouting maxim occurred in the movie, such as covering something, giving more information, changing the topic, and intriguing the listener. The flouting maxims occur for different reasons and meanings in this movie

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the reading ability of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 16 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2024/2025 through the implementation of the PARS (Preview, Ask, Read, Summarize) strategy. The study was conducted using Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles, each comprising planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The research subjects were 34 students from class XI. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The results show a steady improvement in students’ reading ability and classroom engagement. In cycle I, the average learning activity score is 33.05 and the mean test score is 58.52. In cycle II, the learning activity score increases to 37.52, the mean test score rises to 70.45 meeting the MCC. Therefore, these findings demonstrate that the PARS strategy effectively improves students’ active participation and reading comprehension, and considered an effective instructional strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of grammatical cohesion in Jo March’s dialogues of the Little Women movie, focusing on how frequent the types can occur as well as its function to convey meaning. This study addresses the gap by focusing how cohesive devices are used to shape Jo March’s way of speaking and the way she expresses her character. The data were collected from Jo’s utterances from the script, while the content analysis by Ary et al., was employed to analyze the data. The writer checks the data validity using peer debriefing and theory triangulation using Paltridge’s and Halliday’s theory. Several types the writer found from the script are reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis. The results indicate that conjunctions were the most frequent types from the script, with 46%. Followed by reference with 26%, ellipsis 17%, and substitution 11%. These numbers show that Jo tends to speak quickly and connect her ideas closely together. The references help her link one idea to another, while ellipsis and substitution reveal her natural, informal way of talking. In other words, the function of each grammatical cohesion types is to create unity and clarity in a text by linking its elements, avoiding unnecessary repetition, and making the flow of contents easier to follow.
