Abstract

Teaching writing English as a foreign language (EFL) in university setting aims to achieve both linguistic and literacy competencies. It means that the instruction not only focuses on facilitating students to build writing English proficiency, but also on leading students to become literate. Based on this context, it is important for lecturers to select appropriate and effective strategies in the writing instruction. Critical reading is regarded as meaningful and effective reading strategy which can be applied by academic writing instructors or lecturers in order to enable the students in writing an English-written paper. This article attempts to discuss why and how critical reading strategy should be utilized in literacy model of EFL writing instruction, especially in writing a research paper. By understanding the relationship between reading and writing, it is hoped that the activities in the EFL writing classroom can be more meaningful.

Abstract

Media pembelajaran merupakan alat, bahan, dan peraga digunakan guru dalam kegiatan pembelajaran. Penggunaan media pembelajaran dapat membantu siswa dapat memehami materi. Powtoon merupakan aplikasi IT yang dapat digunakan dalam pembelajaran. Dalam powtoon dilengkapi perangkat-perangkat menarik yang dapat digunakan dalam media pembelajaran. Berdasarkan pengabdian di SMK muhammadiyah 4 Kalisat, terdapat tiga simpulan utama. Pertama, guru di SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Kalisat sebagian besar telah mampu memahami pentingnya media pembelajaran saat mengajar dan menggunakan poowton sebagai media pembelajaran berbasis IT. Kedua, sebagian guru masih kesulitan membuat media menggunakan aplikasi powtoon. Ketiga, guru diharapkan berkomitmen untuk membuat media pembelajaran dengan aplikasi powtoon.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into the effect of the PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, and End) approach on the development of paragraph writing skills. It attempted to look into the effect. In previous study, the research was conducted in areas outside East Java and this research was conducted in the area of East Java, to be precise at SMP Negeri 2 Genteng, Banyuwangi. Seventy-three EFL students from SMP Negeri 2 Genteng took part in the study and were divided into experimental and control groups. The researchers used a pre- and post-test on both groups to achieve the study's goal. The research was analyzed by comparing the pre-test and post-test of both group by using normality test, homogeneity test and independent sample t-test. The findings of the data analysis revealed that the PLEASE method had a significant effect on developing paragraphs.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu pelajaran yang diajarakan kepada peserta didik baik dari tingkat dasar hingga perguruan tinggi. Terdapat 4 skill yang perlu dikuasai dalam bahasa Inggris yaitu listening (mendengar), reading (membaca), writing (menulis), dan speaking (berbicara). Seringkali guru masih kesulitan untuk mengembangkan 4 skill tersebut dalam pembelajaran. Terlebih lagi tingkat pemahaman peserta didik dalam kelas tentu beragam seperti yang terjadi di kelas X-6 SMA Negeri 2 Jember. Penelitian ini menggunakan Genre Based Approach untuk dapat membantu penerapan 4 skill dalam bahasa Inggris yang dibagi dalam beberapa pertemuan. Dengan menggunakan Genre Based Approach, proses pembelajaran dapat membuat peserta didik memahami secara utuh mengenai sebuah teks baik dalam segi pengetahuan dan juga keterampilan menulis. Dalam penerapan Genre Based Approach, peneliti menggabungkan dengan penggunaan pembelajaran berdiferensiasi untuk dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar peserta didik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan hasil belajar peserta didik dengan menggunakan penerapan Genre Based Approach dan pembelajaran berdiferensiasi pada materi Invitation kelas X-6 SMA Negeri 2 Jember Tahun Ajaran 2022/2023. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah metode penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilakukan melalui 2 siklus. Data penelitian didapatkan dari hasil kerja peserta didik pada tiap pertemuannya dan didukung oleh lembar observasi untuk melihat respon peserta didik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan Genre Based Approach dan pembelajaran berdiferensiasi dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar peserta didik pada materi Invitation. Pencapaian ketuntasan belajar dari kondisi awal pra siklus yaitu 31% meningkat menjadi 78,13% pada siklus I dan 93% pada siklus II.

Abstract

UU No. 20 tahun 2003 mendefinisikan pendidikan sebagai upaya sadar dan terencana untuk menciptakan suasana belajar, memungkinkan siswa mengembangkan potensi spiritual, kepribadian, kecerdasan, akhlak, dan keterampilan yang berguna bagi diri, masyarakat, bangsa, dan negara. Problem Based Learning (PBL) adalah model pembelajaran yang menggunakan masalah dunia nyata sebagai konteks untuk mengajarkan berpikir kritis, pemecahan masalah, dan memperoleh pengetahuan esensial dari materi pelajaran (Duch: Shoimin, 2014, P.30; Sudarman, 2005, P.69). PBL mendorong siswa belajar secara aktif dan berfokus pada penerapan pengetahuan dalam situasi nyata. Teknik window shopping adalah kegiatan dimana siswa belajar secara berkelompok untuk melakukan diskusi dalam kelompoknya yang kemudian hasil diskusi akan dijadikan sebagai barang pajangan untuk tukar informasi bersama kelompok lain. Jadi siswa tidak hanya duduk di kursi masing-masing, melainkan bebas berkeliling kelas untuk berdiskusi. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dikelas XI-MIPA 4 SMAN 2 Tanggul dengan jumlah 36 siswa serta menggunakan kuisioner dan angket sebagai instrumen. Pada siklus I, berdasarkan hasil observasi menggunakan kuisioner motivasi belajar ditemukan bahwa >50% peserta didik memiliki motivasi belajar rendah. Kemudian pada siklus II, peneliti menerapkan teknik Windows Shoppingpada sintak PBL, setelah tindakan terdapat peningkatan dengan hasil <50% siswa memiliki motivasi belajar tinggi. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa menerapkan teknik Windows Shoppingdalam siklus model pembelajaran PBL dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar peserta didik.

Abstract

Novice translators often face various challenges in understanding and translating texts from one language to another. This study aimed at describing the development of translation quality of a novice translator’s work after joining internship program. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the data source was the translation result of the English text into Indonesian. This translation was produced by a novice translator during a three-month internship program. Documentary study was employed to collect the data. To analyze the data, it was used text and content analysis technique. Afterwards, the data are categorized based on Larson's theory (1997). The research result showed that the translation conducted by a novice translator was in better development in the quality and achieved acceptability on the target language (Indonesian).

Abstract

The role of human resources for teachers (educators) in technological progress in the era of the Industrial Revolution 5.0 makes the world of education the most important part of changing the nation's civilization, because it is the implementer of the success of the learning process in the classroom. The government's policy on independent learning hopes to have a positive impact through various activities to grow and improve a culture of literacy, competence and character. Therefore, this service provides a form of service through the socialization of the school literacy movement in independent curriculum learning at SMP Muhammadiyah 01 Jember. The results of this service have provided an understanding of the importance of carrying out a massive school literacy movement by providing access to reading and providing facilities to students. This activity has strengthened the importance of teacher competence in developing and implementing ideas for literacy culture in schools through a text-rich environment, an affective social environment, an appropriate academic environment according to the independent curriculum, and providing a creative environment (makerspace). Thus, this service activity can have a positive impact on schools, especially teachers as implementers of the success of the learning process in the classroom in increasing student competence

Abstract

Listening becomes one of the skills that is very important to master. Unfortunately, many EFL students lack in listening. This study aimed to help EFL students develop their listening skills by integrating fable videos. This research used classroom action research. The participants of this study consist of 31 tenth-grade 3 students at SMAN Arjasa, Jember. The instruments used by the author were an observation checklist and a listening test, and to collect the data, the author observed the students in every cycle of cycle 1 and 2, and also conducted the listening test at the end of each cycle. The data were analyzed by classification and scoring. The use of fable video as the media significantly improved students’ listening comprehension and became an effective tool that can engage students' participation during the learning process, also understandable within the context existing in the video. The use of interactive and effective media, such as fable video, is really needed to improve students' listening skills and participation.

Abstract

Effective writing instruction is crucial for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Nonetheless, teaching cause-and-effect sentences remains a challenge. The current study aims to examine the effectiveness of puzzle media in addressing this challenge. The study employed a pre-experimental, pre-test/post-test design with one group of participants comprising Indonesian high school students. Specifically, this group underwent a pre-test, instructional treatments using puzzle media, and a post-test, along with a questionnaire. The pre-test and post-test were intended to gauge the effectiveness of puzzle media on cause-and-effect sentences as reflected in the participants’ ability to use these constructions before vs. after receiving the instructional treatments, whereas the questionnaire was intended to explore their views of the given instructional treatment. The data, comprising the participants’ scores on the pre-test and post-test, were analysed using a paired-sample t-test. Results reveal a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, indicating that puzzle media is effective in teaching cause-and-effect sentences to EFL learners. Furthermore, the analysis of the participants’ responses on the questionnaire indicates that 62.1% of participants found puzzle media engaging and helpful in writing tasks. This study concludes that incorporating puzzle media into EFL writing instruction can enhance learners’ mastery of cause-and-effect sentences and foster a more engaging learning experience.

Abstract

Meningkatnya limbah tutup botol plastik di lingkungan SD UHAMKA Jember dan minimnya kreativitas siswa dalam mengelola sampah menjadi permasalahan yang memerlukan solusi edukatif dan aplikatif. Tujuan pengabdian ini untuk mengedukasi siswa SD UHAMKA dalam pemanfaatan Bahan Non Produktif Tutup Botol Plastik (BANTIF-BOTIK) menjadi kerajinan tangan bernilai guna sekaligus menumbuhkan kesadaran lingkungan dan keterampilan kreatif. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan Community Development melalui tahapan sosialisasi, pelatihan, pendampingan, evaluasi. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan siswa mampu memahami konsep daur ulang, menghasilkan produk kreatif seperti jam dinding, figura foto, tempat pensil, dan tempat sampah, serta antusiasme yang tinggi dalam praktik langsung. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga memberikan wawasan kewirausahaan sederhana melalui pengenalan nilai ekonomi dari produk daur ulang. Hasil Evaluasi juga menunjukkan 85% siswa dapat menyelesaikan produk secara mandiri, dan sekolah memberikan respon positif sebagai salah satu program kegiatan ekstrakurikuler berkelanjutan. Kolaborasi antara tim pengabdian, guru, dan pihak sekolah menjadi faktor pendukung utama keberhasilan kegiatan. Dengan demikian, kegiatan ini menumbuhkan kepedulian sekolah terhadap lingkungan dan kreativitas siswa sejak dini melalui pendekatan edukatif yang aplikatif dan berkelanjutan
