Abstract

Bedhaya is a dance performed by female dancers within the royal palace environment. One of the Bedhaya dances preserved in the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is Bedhaya Mintaraga, the yasan dalem of Sri Sultan Hamengku Bawono Ka-10. Bedhaya Mintaraga conveys messages about the noble values a ksatria must possess, represented by Raden Arjuna during his ascetic period, titled Begawan Mintaraga. These messages are conveyed not only through dance movements but also through the Serat Pasindhen sung by the sindhen. In this context, A.Teeuw’s semiotic theory, particularly cultural codes, is used to examine how cultural codes in the Bedhaya Mintaraga represent and transmit life values through artistic symbols. The results of the study show that the cultural code in the Serat Pasindhen Bedhaya Mintaraga reflects the social practices in the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat environment, when the Serat Pasindhen Bedhaya Mintaraga includes the concept of babahan hawa sanga, forms of symbolic legitimization, representations of prayer, and the figure of Raden Arjuna, as well as life teachings that emphasize the principle of memayu hayuning Buwono. This research shows that the performing arts of the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat can be understood as a cultural text that serves to preserve philosophical teachings and strengthen cultural identities, both of which remain relevant to society.

Abstract

This article examines the spirituality of the Javanese people as reflected in Syair Risalah Tamba Ngantuk, a work by KH. Mohammad Zuhri that conveys strong moral and religious messages. The syair represents Javanese Islamic teachings through self-awareness, repentance, and a personal relationship with God. This study aims to reveal the forms, expressions, and meanings of spirituality in the syair using Puspoprojo’s hermeneutical approach, which consists of three principles: grammatical (nalar rasa), historical (pangerten kontekstual), and philosophical (laku tafsir). Using a qualitative method with thematic content analysis, the study finds that spirituality in the syair is expressed through teachings on the awareness of death, the importance of repentance, ethics in seeking knowledge, cosmological views of the soul, and prayer as a spiritual act. The hermeneutic interpretation shows that KH. Mohammad Zuhri not only delivers normative Islamic teachings but also expresses spiritual values in a gentle, poetic, and contextual language. Thus, Syair Risalah Tamba Ngantuk embodies a creative dialogue between Islam and Javanese culture, remaining relevant to contemporary religious life.

Abstract

This study analyzes forms of injustice and resistance experienced by the female main character in the short story collection Wit Tanjung Ngiringan Omah using a feminist approach and James C. Scott's theory of resistance. Data collection involved reading and note-taking, with the reading process conducted heuristically and subsequently analyzed hermeneutically to achieve a deeper understanding. The research data consist of phrases and sentences related to forms of injustice, betrayal, and manifestations of resistance by the female protagonists, drawn from the short story collection Wit Tanjung Ngiringan Omah. The results indicate the presence of betrayal in the realms of romance, politics, economics, legitimacy, and protective functions. The female main character's resistance manifests in the form of open resistance (public transcript) and hidden resistance (hidden transcript), with hidden resistance being the most dominant form. Overall, this study demonstrates that power is not always manifested through physical rebellion but also through covert resistance.

Abstract

A biography of the modern Javanese period, written in prose, not only tells the story of a person's life but also contains advice, testamentary, and even the identity of the Javanese people. This research aims to reveal that in three biographical texts: Serat Kulapratama, Kyai Pandhanarang, and Lelampahan Dalem Sasradiningrat. This research uses Gadamer's qualitative-hermeneutic design. Data were collected using the Baca, Simak, and Catat (BSC) technique, then analyzed using the Miles & Huberman analysis model, comprising data collection, data reduction, and data presentation. The results are: 1) four categories of testamentary: ethical and moral testamentary, testamentary of responsibility and leadership, Javanese religious and spiritual testamentary, and testamentary of social and cultural life; and 2) Javanese identities are not lost, but are integrated and undergo a reinterpretation of meaning in the present. Individual ideal identities, narima lan prasaja, can be aligned with adaptive and minimalist lifestyles, as well as with efforts to protect the environment and to promote anti-consumption. Collective identities in relationships, gotong royong, and tata krama, are understood through the concepts of harmony, teamwork, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Spiritual identities such as laku prihatin, eling lan waspada are defined as simple lifestyles, the ability to manage stress, and the awareness of worldly temptations, all of which are achieved by always remembering God. Individual, social, and spiritual values are integrated into collective consciousness, inherited, and form the attitude of today's Javanese society, which is more adaptive and reflective. The theoretical implications of this study explain that biography is not just a text that records a person's life, but also a medium for conveying messages and for testamentary purposes, describing the identity of Javanese society from the perspective of the character. In practical terms, this research provides guidelines and mandates from ancestors for the next generation to live by.
