Abstract

Rising sea level as one of the effects of climate change may probably destroy the coastal area. This nature phenomenon is explained in a pictorial children's storybook entitled Sea Change. The story tells about rising sea level in Fiji, and it is suitable to the reality occurring in Fiji. Rising sea level reaches the land by the sea, hence the people living there must be relocated. Sea Changes is analyzed using ecocritical approach and semiotic theory. This study aims to reveal the meaning of visual appearance which goes to the values containing in the story. The analysis reveals four ecocritical elements by Scott Slovic, these are where the humans are, where the humans live, how the humans treat the environment, and how humans treat other humans. The four questions are answered using semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the pictorial book and the values for children. The results of the study are that Sea Change gives some value for children, these are about where humans properly live, and how humans properly treat the environment and other humans.

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores the role of the heroine in preserving Balinese cultural identity, focusing on the character of Luh Ayu Manik Mas from the children's story, "At War with the Spirit World." By employing Roland Barthes's mythological analysis, we delve into the denotative and connotative meanings embedded within the narrative. Denotatively, the heroine is portrayed as an independent and strong figure, essential for cultural continuity. She actively engages in preserving Balinese traditions, such as participating in water rituals and protecting the environment. Connotatively, the heroine embodies qualities of bravery, sacrifice, and a deep connection to Balinese cultural values. Her actions highlight the significance of environmental sustainability and the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of modern challenges. By analyzing the character of Luh Ayu Manik Mas, this research demonstrates how literature can contribute to the maintenance of cultural identity. The heroine's journey serves as a powerful tool for transmitting cultural values and inspiring future generations to embrace and preserve Balinese traditions.

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of ideology through the lens of Louis Althusser's theories, particularly interpellation, experienced by Chen Zen in Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem. The purpose of this research is to go beyond oversimplified ideas of false consciousness and investigate how ideology essentially influences people's worldviews, directs group behaviour, and pervades every facet of human existence, from government system to personal identities. The research was carried out using descriptive qualitative method. It meticulously analyzes the novel Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong to demonstrate Althusser's concepts in practice. The results and discussion focus on how the protagonist, Chen Zhen, a Han Chinese student in Inner Mongolia, experiences a profound ideological shifting. Through his engagement in Mongolian culture and his observations of wolves, Chen's previous "tired and weary" identity is gradually replaced by a new perspective, symbolizing the "wolf's blood" flowing in his blood. This shift is an example of the unconscious process of interpellation, in which people are "hailed" into particular subject positions, which eventually serves to either support or undermine pre-existing social structures. In conclusion, the paper demonstrates how Wolf Totem vividly illustrates the dynamic interaction between state-imposed ideology and alternative cultural ideologies, revealing how they shape identities, worldviews, and social relations. This analysis ultimately advances our knowledge of conflict and collaboration in a complex world
