Abstract

Teaching English in Indonesia is not the same as teaching English in a country where English is the native language. The teacher should make sure the students understand the explanation or instruction from the teacher. In the foreign language classroom, code switching is naturally occurring to make the teaching learning process run smoothly. Therefore, this study aimed to explain the function of code switching, students perceptions of the teacher’s code switching, and the effect of teacher’s code switching practices on students’ understanding in the teaching learning process. It was conducted at SMAN 9 Palu by using descriptive qualitative as the method. The researcher used observation, questionnaire and interview to get the data. The results of the study showed that first, there were three functions of code switching used by the teacher proposed by Sert (2005), those are topic switch, affective function, and repetitive function. Second, most of the students had positive perceptions about students' understanding and students' feelings during learning with code switching used by the teacher. Third, code switching used by the teacher in teaching learning English process provides a positive effect in providing a positive learning environment, and facilitating students with low level of second language proficiency . Abstract

This research explores the impact of using picture series to improve students’ ability to write procedural texts at SMP Negeri 1 Palasa. The primary issue addressed is whether picture series can support students in developing writing skills, organizing ideas, and maintaining motivation during writing activities. The study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test approach involving 20 ninth-grade students selected through single-class sampling. The research was conducted over six sessions, comprising a pre-test, instructional treatment, and a post-test. Data were collected through writing assessments administered before and after the intervention and analyzed using paired sample t-tests. The results indicated an increase in the average score from 60.12 in the pre-test to 68.00 in the post-test. Statistical analysis showed that the calculated t-value (3.44) exceeded the critical t-value (2.36) at a 0.05 significance level with 20 degrees of freedom. These findings suggest that using picture series significantly enhances students’ performance in procedural writing, highlighting its effectiveness as a teaching strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using YouTube videos as a learning medium to enhance English vocabulary mastery among second-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, involving one group that received treatment without a control group. The data were collected through a pre-test and post-test, each consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions focused on verbs and adjectives. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the implementation of YouTube videos in the learning process. The average score increased from 62.3 in the pre-test to 78.9 in the post-test, with a gain of 16.6 points. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to analyze the data, as the same group was tested twice and the data did not meet normality assumptions. The test yielded a statistical value of 0.0 with a p-value of 0.007 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Based on these findings, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, confirming that the use of YouTube videos is effective in improving students’ English vocabulary mastery. This study suggests that English teachers consider integrating YouTube videos into classroom instruction to foster a more engaging and effective learning environment.
