Abstract

The Emergency Room is a unit that provides initial treatment for trauma patients. Trauma cases contribute to disability and suffering, making it the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. In 2021, the prevalence of trauma-related deaths was approximately 4.4 million people globally, with 8% of cases resulting in death. This phenomenon highlights the importance of health workers, possessing specialized knowledge and competence in emergencies, including triage, primary, and secondary assessment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between knowledge and nurse competence in providing follow-up care for trauma cases at the ER in South Sulawesi. The research method utilized in this study is quantitative, employing a cross-sectional approach with a total sample of 37 respondents selected through the total sampling technique. The research was conducted at Ibnu Sina Hospital and Bayangkara Hospital in Makassar. Data were collected through questionnaires and competency observation sheets, and subsequently tested using a correlation test. The results of the univariate test indicate that nurses possess good knowledge in various aspects of follow-up care, including triage, primary survey, and secondary survey. Additionally, their competencies in these areas are also well-developed. The correlation test revealed significant relationships between knowledge and triage competence (p-value of 0.01), knowledge and primary survey competencies (p-value of 0.047), as well as knowledge and secondary survey competencies (p-value of 0.04). These findings suggest that a higher level of knowledge among Emergency Room nurses regarding follow-up care corresponds to better competence in managing trauma cases in the emergency room. In this study, it can be concluded that there exists a relationship between nurses' knowledge regarding follow-up care and their competence in three aspects: triage, primary survey, and secondary survey. Based on these findings, it is recommended that nurses can enhance their competencies through training and can apply high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation to improve patient safety.

Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) has become an important strategy to improve the quality of elderly care, including the integration of Islamic values in care practices. Although integrated services have been implemented, the structured and collaborative implementation of IPC among medical, health, and non-health personnel has not yet been fully optimized. Objective: This study explores the experiences of medical, health, and non-health personnel in implementing Islamic integration–based IPC at Sentra Gau Mabaji, Gowa Regency. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Ten participants were involved, consisting of medical, health, and non-health personnel who were directly engaged in elderly care services. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and analyzed using the Colaizzi method. Data credibility was maintained through triangulation of methods, sources, researchers, and theories. Results: Three main themes emerged from the analysis: (1) the importance of assessing physical capacity as the basis for determining intervention needs in older adults; (2) interprofessional collaboration through clear roles and responsibilities in elderly care services; and (3) the implementation of IPC through spiritual and motivational interventions. Discussion: A clear understanding among each profession regarding collaborative practice based on their respective roles and responsibilities is a key factor in the successful implementation of IPC. In addition, spiritual and motivational interventions provide older adults with a sense of meaning and psychological support. Conclusion: The findings indicate that the implementation of an Islamic integration–based IPC model contributes positively to the delivery of holistic, meaningful, and patient-centered care for older adults. Strengthening policies, collaborative training, and integrated documentation systems are necessary to optimize IPC practices in elderly care services. Keywords: integration, interprofessional collaboration, older adults, spiritual

Abstract

Background: Aging is associated with a significant decline in muscle mass and strength, which increases the risk of falls among older adults. One strategic approach to address this issue is bodyweight squat training, which targets lower extremity muscle strength, balance, and functional ability in older adults. This study aimed to analyze the effect of bodyweight squat training on muscle strength in older adults. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 63 older adults were recruited using a purposive sampling technique. Muscle strength was assessed using the Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST). Data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test. Results: The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in muscle strength following bodyweight squat training (p = 0.001). The mean FTSST completion time decreased from 12.51 seconds at baseline to 10.86 seconds after the intervention. Conclusion: The reduction in FTSST completion time indicates that bodyweight squat training is effective in improving muscle strength in older adults. This exercise can be recommended as a routine physical activity to enhance muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health problem with increasing prevalence and significant risk of cardiovascular complications, particularly in primary healthcare settings. Limited community knowledge and low levels of structured physical activity contribute to inadequate non-pharmacological hypertension control. This community service program aimed to improve knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills in hypertension management through structured health education and brisk walking exercise in the working area of Kanjilo Public Health Center. The intervention employed an educational and participatory approach involving 30 adults and older adults with or at risk of hypertension. Activities included baseline assessment, delivery of hypertension education, demonstration and supervised brisk walking practice, and post-intervention evaluation. Results showed substantial improvements in cognitive and behavioral outcomes. The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 40.0% to 86.7%, positive attitudes from 46.7% to 83.3%, and understanding of physical activity benefits from 43.3% to 90.0%. Additionally, 83.3% were able to correctly perform brisk walking, and 86.7% expressed commitment to regular physical activity. These findings indicate that integrating health education with moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is feasible and effective in strengthening community-based hypertension control. The program demonstrates potential as a promotive and preventive model within primary healthcare services.
