Abstract

Adolescents are the next generation who are currently in an important transitional stage toward adulthood. At this phase, they are highly vulnerable to various influences, including a lack of knowledge about reproductive health, the risk of stunting, and the impacts of early marriage. In response to these conditions, a community service activity was conducted at the Auditorium of STIKes Gunung Maria Tomohon, Tomohon City, with the aim of providing health education to students so that they can better understand the importance of adolescents’ role in preventing stunting and the negative impacts of early marriage. The program was carried out in three stages: planning in collaboration with the BKKBN team and the school, delivering interactive health education using engaging media, and evaluation through a question-and-answer session. A total of 164 students enthusiastically participated in the activity, and the discussion results revealed that reproductive health and early marriage were their primary concerns. It is expected that through continuous education, adolescents will be able to make wiser decisions for their future and contribute to stunting prevention within their communities. Programs like this are essential to be held regularly and to reach more schools.

Abstract

Hypertension in adults aged 45-55 years has a significant impact on heart health and morbidity. Hypertension is estimated to affect 1.56 billion people by 2025 and become a leading cause of death. In Indonesia, the prevalence is 18.7% in the 45-54 age group, with North Sulawesi ranking third highest. In Kotamobagu, hypertension ranks second among non-communicable diseases with 24,956 cases. This high number emphasizes the importance of prevention and control. A deep understanding of modifiable risk factors is needed to develop effective prevention strategies. This study aims to identify the primary risk factors that influence the prevalence of hypertension in the adult population of Kotamobagu City. This descriptive-quantitative study used an analytical observational study design with a cross-sectional technique. The study was conducted in Kotamobagu City, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, from July to August 2024. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional method, data collection using a digital sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure, an Easy Touch GCU Meter to analyze dyslipidemia and blood sugar levels, and a questionnaire to assess physical activity, diet, salt consumption, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits. The sample consisted of 388 hypertensive patients selected using the Slovin Formula, and the statistical analysis used was chi-square. The results showed that diet, dyslipidemia, obesity, high salt consumption, alcohol, and smoking were significantly correlated with hypertension. Based on the odds ratio, the factors that had the strongest relationship with the incidence of hypertension were poor diet (OR = 1.53), dyslipidemia (OR = 1.49), and excessive salt consumption (OR = 1.46).

Abstract

Proper nutrition during pregnancy plays a crucial role in supporting fetal development and maintaining the mother's health. However, there is still a knowledge gap among pregnant women, especially in rural and remote areas, regarding the importance of nutritional intake during pregnancy. This study is aimed at comprehensively analyzing the impact of maternal nutritional intake on maternal health and growth. Methods. The study involves 150 purposively selected pregnant women who visited Puskesmas, health clinics, or maternal and child hospitals in Padang City during the 6-month period of the study. The data collection technique is done by interviewing pregnant women using questionnaires related to demographics and diet. The collected data will be analysed using statistical methods, descriptive test to see the general description of the characteristics of pregnant women and their nutritional intake, and chi square test to analyse the relationship between nutritional intake and infant birth weight (LBW). Results. Most pregnant women had a moderate level of knowledge about nutrition (46.7%), but there were 40% who had low knowledge. There was a significant relationship between pregnant women's knowledge level about nutrition and nutrient intake and its impact on LBW. Conclusions. Pregnant women have a low knowledge level regarding nutrition, which in turn affects foetal health, growth, and quality of life. With these measures, it is hoped that the risk of pregnancy complications due to malnutrition can be minimised and the quality of maternal and infant health can be significantly improved.

Abstract

The triple burden of malnutrition (stunting, obesity, and anaemia) is a serious problem experienced by toddlers in Jakarta's slums, with a prevalence reaching more than one-third of the population. The objective of this study is to ascertain the prevalence and coexistence patterns of these events in toddlers residing in the Jakarta area. The data presented herein were collected through the utilisation of structured interviews, employing a standardized questionnaire, with mothers/guardians of toddlers. The collected data were analysed univariately to determine the frequency distribution of respondent characteristics and nutritional status, followed by bivariate analysis to test the relationship between independent variables (socioeconomic factors, consumption patterns, access to health services) with nutritional status using the chi-square test, and multivariate with multiple logistic regression. The prevalence of stunting was 36.2%, and obesity was 16.2%. The coexistence of two or three forms (double/triple burden) was found in nearly 36.4% of children. Maternal education, family income below the minimum wage (UMP), imbalanced dietary patterns, and irregular access to integrated health service posts (Posyandu) were statistically significantly associated with the risk of triple burden. The findings of this study provide a robust and valid depiction of the concurrent burden of nutritional problems in children residing in a deprived urban area. The study also serves as a foundation for the formulation of integrated and evidence-based nutrition intervention programmes.

Abstract

Stunting is a significant public health problem in Indonesia, including in East Kalimantan. Purpouse: This study aims to identify factors that influence pregnant women's nutrition awareness in rural Samarinda and develop effective strategies to improve nutrition education to prevent stunting. Methods: The study used a qualitative and quantitative approach (mixed-methods) to obtain a comprehensive picture of the level of awareness and understanding of balanced nutrition among pregnant women. Qualitative in-depth interviews and observations were used to understand the social, cultural, and economic factors that contribute to the nutritional consumption patterns of pregnant women in rural South Indonesia. Results: The results showed that most pregnant women had moderate (45%) and low (30%) levels of nutritional awareness. Education level (60%) and family support (65%) had the highest influence on pregnant women, at 60% and 65%, respectively. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that nutrition interventions should not only be conducted from an educational aspect but also take into account social and cultural aspects to be more effective in improving pregnant woman's nutritional awareness and preventing stunting, especially through more intensive and community-based education.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common major health problems in the elderly population and is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Factors such as aging, unhealthy lifestyles, low medication adherence, and the presence of comorbidities contribute significantly to the increase in hypertension in the elderly. This study aims to analyze factors associated with hypertension in the elderly, including demographic, lifestyle, and medical factors, through a systematic review (SR) approach. The study was conducted by searching scientific literature from various reputable databases published between 2019 and 2025, using inclusion criteria that included the elderly population, blood pressure measurements, and the identification of relevant risk factors. The synthesis results indicate that demographic factors such as advanced age and female gender, lifestyle factors such as high salt consumption, low physical activity, and smoking habits, and medical factors such as family history of hypertension, medication adherence, and the presence of comorbidities (especially diabetes and heart disease) are the main determinants of the degree of hypertension in the elderly. Non-adherence to medication contributes to the severity of hypertension, wheres adherence contributes to the control of hypertension.

Abstract

Infants with low birth weight (LBW) are prone to body temperature instability due to immature temperature regulation systems. Conventional care in incubators often causes mother-infant separation. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an innovative method that promotes closeness between mother and infant. This study aims to assess the effect of KMC on body temperature stability in LBW infants admitted to the NICU. Using a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, LBW infants meeting inclusion criteria were observed. Body temperature was measured before and after KMC implementation using a digital thermometer. Data analysis employed a paired t-test. Results showed that Prior to the implementation of KMC, the average body temperature of LBW infants was 36.7°C with a standard deviation of 0.159, ranging from 36.5°C to 37.2°C. After the implementation of KMC, the average body temperature increased to 37.3°C, with a standard deviation of 1.024, and a temperature range of 37.1°C to 37.5°C, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that KMC positively affects body temperature stability in LBW infants in the NICU. KMC is a nonpharmacological alternative to incubator care that improves LBW infant outcomes. It supports temperature stability, weight gain, respiratory regulation, and enhances the mother–infant bond. Routine implementation in NICUs can lower hospitalization duration, reduce reliance on medical equipment, and cut treatment costs. Successful adoption requires trained health personnel and supportive hospital policies to make KMC a standard part of neonatal care.
