Abstract

In the patrilineal culture of the Batak tribe, marriage is a societal expectation for adult men, and remaining unmarried can lead to significant pressure, resulting in feelings of frustration and failure. Religiosity and self-compassion are believed to positively impact the psychological well-being of unmarried early adult men within the Batak tribe. This study aims to explore the influence of religiosity and self-compassion on the psychological well-being of these men. The research involved 66 participants who were early adult, unmarried, and of Batak ethnicity. The instruments used in the study included scales for religiosity, self-compassion, and psychological well-being, with data analyzed through multiple regression analysis. The findings indicate that: 1) religiosity does not significantly influence psychological well-being, and 2) selfcompassion has a positive impact on psychological well-being. It is recommended that unmarried early adult men in the Batak tribe enhance their self-compassion by cultivating positive self-assessment and self-respect in various situations, particularly in response to the stress of being unmarried

Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity was conducted through a seminar entitled “Parent-Child Relationships from a Psychological Perspective”, aimed at enhancing the quality of relationships between parents and their children. The seminar took place at GBKP Runggun Sikeben Congregation, Tanah Karo, and was attended by parents along with their adolescent and adult children. Communication problems, perception gaps, and a lack of understanding of children’s personalities and developmental stages often trigger conflicts within families. This seminar offered a psychological approach to building healthy relationships, emphasizing the importance of two-way communication, empathy, and an understanding of personal characteristics and human developmental stages—from early childhood to adulthood. The seminar was delivered in an interactive and reflective manner. The outcomes showed that participants gained new insights into the role of parents as companions to their children and recognized the need to establish open and empathetic communication within the family. This activity positively contributed to increasing psychological awareness in parenting practices and opened opportunities for further collaboration in fostering harmonious family relationships.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of gender role conflict, loneliness, and fatherless on the subjective well-being of male university students in Indonesia, a population that faces unique psychosocial demands during the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. The increasing tension between traditional masculine norms—emphasizing emotional restraint, autonomy, and strength—and contemporary expectations that value emotional openness and social connectedness may place male students at heightened risk for lower well-being. Using a quantitative correlational design, this research involved 227 male students selected through purposive sampling. Four standardized instruments were employed: The Gender-Role Conflict Scale, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Fatherhood Scale, and two well-being measures (SWLS and SPANE). Data were analysed using SEM-PLS to assess the simultaneous and relative contributions of each predictor. Results indicate that loneliness and fatherless significantly and negatively predict subjective well-being, with loneliness emerging as the strongest predictor. In contrast, gender role conflict does not significantly influence subjective well-being in this sample. The model explains 26.9% of the variance in subjective well-being, supported by robust regression diagnostics, including acceptable VIF values and the absence of heteroskedasticity. These findings highlight the central role of emotional and relational factors—particularly loneliness and the presence of a supportive father figure—in shaping well-being among male students. The nonsignificant effect of gender role conflict suggests that masculine norm pressures may not directly reduce well-being but could influence it indirectly through other psychological mechanisms. The study underscores the need for university counselling services and family-based interventions to address loneliness and strengthen father–son relationships as protective factors that can enhance the psychological well-being of male students
