Abstract

Abstract

Marine debris is a pollution problem that has occurred everywhere, even in the waters of remote areas. Marine debris pollution has been detected from ocean waters to bay waters. The waters of Ambon Bay as part of the sea as a whole have also been polluted by marine debris. This is evidenced by the presence of debris stranded on the coast of Hative Besar. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the composition of the type and density of debris stranded on the coast of Hative Besar. Sampling was carried out using the transect method. The results showed that there were eight types of waste, namely plastic, glass and ceramics, cloth, metal, paper, rubber, wood, and medical object. Plastic is the debris with the highest type composition, both on the coast of Wailaa at 90% and Batu Lobang at 89%. The density of plastic debris at the Wailaa area is 50 items/m2, while the Batu Lobang area is 44.91 items/m2. In addition, as a result of the pandemic that occurred, medical object was found, namely masks. The high level of plastic debris in Ambon Bay waters needs to be an important concern because this type of plastic waste is difficult to decompose and the residence time in the environment reaches hundreds of years. The existence of plastic debris is a threat to marine resources in Ambon Bay waters.

Abstract

Gudang Arang community in Ambon City resides in a coastal area with a high population density. Traditional market activity is also existent. The public service program was conducted to increase people’s awareness of marine debris impact and introduce the eco-bricks concept as a practical way to reduce plastic waste from the environment. The program consisted of socialization, eco-bricks-making demonstration, discussion, and evaluation, including people’s knowledge and perspective on marine debris, its impact, and management. Based on the pre-socialization test, it was found that the knowledge about 3R of debris, waste banks, and mitigation concept of the people was low, i.e., 37.04%, 51.85%, 55.56%, respectively; whereas the concept of marine debris, its classification and impact were found good enough to very good (more than 70% to 96%). The perspective towards the presence of waste in the surroundings was excellent (more than 80%, however, the willingness to sort the waste before disposal was relatively low (no more than 70%). After the program, the evaluation increased the community’s knowledge compared to the pre-socialization ((96.30-100%). It implies that the socialization and concept demonstration such as eco-bricks-making and government’s support can positively influence the community in handling the waste

Abstract

Quarter. However, as residents of coastal areas, students still need to be equipped with basic knowledge about marine debris from the concept of mitigation to the basic methods for waste research. The Community Service Program aims to increase the knowledge of the Scouts of the Ambon Bay Quarter about marine debris mitigation and to train skills in basic waste research methods. The socialization applied lecture and discussion methods, while the training was conducted simulatively in the school environment. The training resulted on waste collection that were dominated by macro size (2.5-100 cm), and categorized into four types, namely paper (19.81%), metal (6.17%), glass (1.82%), and plastic (72.19%). Prior to the activity, the evaluation was carried out; it showed the value of initial knowledge was quite varied, including marine debris mitigation, sources, classification, and waste sorting (0-4%), the impact of marine debris and its sources (4.35%), debris counting (8.70 %), garbage collection (100%). After the activity, the knowledge was significantly increased reaching 95.65%-100% for all indicators. This combination of socialization and training had a positive impact on increasing students' knowledge and skills related to the topic. It is expected that students can implement it in various scouting activities particularly those related to the environment. In addition, as a coastal community, scouts can also be consistence in thinking and working in the coastal and marine environment, now and in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Marine debris is an environmental problem that has serious impacts on ecosystems, human health, and the social and economic aspects of coastal communities. Most marine debris originates from land-based activities carried by rivers to the sea, with plastic being the dominant component. Plastic debris is difficult to decompose, has the potential to become microplastics, and can pollute marine biota and enter the human food chain. The degradation of coastal ecosystems due to debris in the Maluku Islands is increasingly worrying, necessitating educational efforts through increasing marine debris literacy from an early age. A Community Service (PkM) activity by the Marine Science Study Program Team was carried out at Rehoboth Christian Elementary School, Ambon, with the aim of increasing students' knowledge and awareness of waste management based on the 3R principle. The implementation method included material socialization, interactive activities, and discussions. Participants were 45 students from grades I and II of Rehoboth Christian Elementary School, Ambon. The results of the activity showed enthusiasm and increased student understanding of the importance of protecting the marine environment, so it is hoped that they can play a role as agents of change in maintaining coastal cleanliness

Abstract

Marine debris is an environmental issue of both national and global concern, particularly marine macro-debris. This study was conducted to determine the level of marine macro-debris pollution along the coast of Negeri Haruku village. Data were collected at three sites considered representative of the Negeri Haruku coastline. A 100-m shoreline transect was used for data collection and divided into 20 segments, from which five segments were randomly selected for sampling. The Clean Coast Index (CCI) was calculated to assess beach cleanliness, while the Plastic Abundance Index (PAI) was used to measure the proportion of plastic debris relative to the total amount of beach debris. The results showed that plastic debris dominated other debris types at all observation sites. This was reflected in the PAI values, namely 4.82 at the site near the river mouth, indicating high plastic density; 1.51 at Hii Beach, indicating moderate plastic density; and 6.09 at Totu Beach, indicating high plastic density. Totu Beach had the highest CCI value of 22.2, indicating a very dirty condition, while the site near the river mouth had a CCI value of 12.6, indicating a dirty condition. In contrast, Hii Beach was classified as clean, with a CCI value of 3.82. A paradoxical pattern was also observed in this study: even at a site with no apparent human activity, debris density was higher (5.55 ± 0.77 items/m²) than at the other two sites. This suggests that the debris may have originated from other locations and been transported by ocean currents. Based on the Clean Coast Index, only Hii Beach was classified as clean, whereas the site near the river mouth and Totu Beach were classified as dirty.
