Abstract

The Muhammadiyah Islamic movement, founded by KH Ahmad Dahlan on 18 November 1912, emerged as a response to the socio-religious degradation under colonial rule, grounding its religious orientation in the purification of Islamic creed based on the Qur’an and Sunnah from elements of shirk, bid‘ah, and khurafat. Through the concept of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam), Muhammadiyah integrates pure monotheism, progressive renewal (tajdid), the principles of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and the vision of rahmatan lil ‘alamin as an embodiment of the ummatan wasathan (the justly balanced community). This study employs a library research method by analyzing several historical works on Muhammadiyah, foundational doctrinal texts (Matan Keyakinan), and academic articles from the Majelis Tarjih scientific archives. Muhammadiyah is an Islamic reform movement in Indonesia that seeks to eliminate bid‘ah, superstition, and khurafat from societal culture. Rooted in the Qur’an and Hadith, Muhammadiyah is committed to developing sound, pure, and enlightened religious thought.

Abstract

Advances in neuroscience have opened new horizons in the field of education, particularly in understanding how the brain functions in the learning process. This article examines the integration of neuroscientific findings and Islamic educational values in designing effective, adaptive, and holistic learning strategies. Using a qualitative literature review approach, the study explores concepts of brain function, the principles of neuroplasticity, and the role of emotions in learning, and relates them to Islamic perspectives on intellect (ʿaql), spirit (rūḥ), and the formation of the insān kāmil (the complete human being). The findings indicate that the learning process is strongly influenced by brain structure and function, including the involvement of emotions and meaningful experiences. Islamic education, through its concepts of intellect and heart (qalb), aligns with neuroscientific approaches in shaping learning systems based on compassion, personalization, and spirituality. Therefore, teachers and Islamic educational institutions need to understand the basic principles of neuroscience in order to create adaptive learning experiences that are spiritually meaningful.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the internalization of Javanese Muhammadiyah cultural values—a synthesis of progressive Islamic theology and Javanese local wisdom—at the elementary education level through the lens of child developmental psychology. Primary education is a critical phase where children are in the concrete operational stage and undergo rapid moral and social development. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing literature reviews and observations across several Muhammadiyah elementary educational institutions in Central Java and Yogyakarta. The findings indicate that the internalization of values, such as andhap ashor (humility), tepa selira (empathy), and a strong work ethic (tajdid), is achieved through three psychological stages: habituation, figurative identification, and significance attribution. Psychologically, the internalization of these cultural values facilitates the development of a positive self-concept and moral autonomy among children. These findings affirm that the Muhammadiyah primary education curriculum serves as a protective pedagogy that transcends mere knowledge transfer, acting instead as an incubation space for a harmonious identity fused from religion and local culture. This research highlights the necessity of strengthening the teacher's role as a social learning model to bridge the gap between traditional values and children's psychosocial development in the digital era.
