One lecturer and twenty students were taken as research subjects in the fourth semester. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method for collecting and analyzing data. This research is conducted by providing observations and interviews as an instrument. The results of the study show that several obstacles faced by students are divided into two factors, namely internal factors and external factors. In terms of internal factors, there are seven obstacles faced by students in learning to speak such as lack of vocabulary, poor grammar, speaking anxiety, fear of making mistakes, low participation, low self-confidence, and mother tongue use. External factors are divided into two categories: environment and lecturer's personality. Students enhance their speaking skills through various methods, including joining an English club or course, forming groups for practice or discussion, learning on social media, listening to English songs and podcasts, and watching movies.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of English speaking through outdoor learning activities in the English Language Education Study Program of Khairun University. Employing a mixed-methods approach, 30 students participated in the research. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that outdoor English speaking activities can effectively enhance students' confidence, motivation, comfort, engagement, and vocabulary acquisition. Students also perceived that learning outside the classroom provides an opportunity for spontaneous interaction, reduces anxiety, and encourages authentic language use. Outdoor learning also created a supportive environment that encouraged collaboration among peers. These findings suggest that speaking activity in an outdoor setting is an effective teaching method and offers a holistic approach to language learning.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine EFL students' skills in writing a thesis introduction. Five student dipilih berdasarkan level keterampilan menulis di mana kelima mahasiswa ini merupakan mahasiswa terbaik. The analysis method used is thematic progression. The student texts were analyzed for each paragraph, then counted how many sentences applied the Constant Theme Pattern, Linear Theme Pattern, Split Theme Pattern, and Derived Theme Pattern. The findings indicated that from the total 194 sentences being analysed, seventy-six employed this pattern to connect ideas. Another aspect of connecting ideas is the cohesive devices used. The higher application of definite articles, pronouns and word repetition is evident. Students majorly drew definite articles and demonstrative pronouns (e.g. this, that) which then makes it adaptable for readers to follow their idea development in a paragraph. Regarding the coherence, students in this study significantly relied on the theme of sentences to be the source of their idea development. Despite the clarity and coherence being well managed in students’ writing, the link between ideas can still be diversed by employing other patterns. Moreover, some rhemes contain new information that need further elaboration as the text grows. Students have applied the rules of thematic progression, although there are several sentences that do not comply with the principles of cohesion and coherence. Guidance and feedback from the lecturer is really needed so that writing skills are maintained, especially in writing the introduction to the thesis.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify errors in the usage of the simple past Tense in the written work of second-semester Class A students in the English education program at Khairun University. The study included 27 students as subjects, and data was collected through written tests and interviews. The researcher utilized Dulay's Theory to categorize the types of errors, finding three main types: omission, addition, and misformation. The frequency of errors was as follows: omission (2.5%), addition (0.75%), and misformation (67.5%). Misformation emerged as the most prevalent error type. Based on interview results, the most common causes of simple past tense errors were students' need for understanding of grammar and simple past tense formulas, as well as a limited vocabulary leading to difficulty in constructing sentences. Additionally, students needed help with the placement of past tense verbs in sentences. These errors were further made worse by inadequate study time, overreliance on in-class learning, and less allocated self-study time at home.
