Abstract

This study is centered on exploring the teachers' perspective towards translanguaging practices in EFL classrooms. This study is framed within a qualitative case study involving four English teachers from two high schools in Sidoarjo, East Java. In order to understand the subjects' perspectives, personal interviews were utilized. The data having been collected, it were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. The current study's findings show that teachers practiced translanguaging mainly when they explained the materials, such as grammar. In this sense, the sole motivation of using translanguaging is that grammar is complex and explaining in English is far more complicated. In addition, teachers also practiced translanguaging when they managed the classroom, showing shared cultural values. Further analysis showed that translanguaging helps teachers achieve their goals, and one of the goals is helping their students understand the materials explained in English better. The results of this study are expected to be advantageous for the teachers to be aware of the importance of translanguaging practices in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This qualitative exploratory study investigates the socio-historical context which impacts on the emergence of youth violence in an urban area, Jakarta, Indonesia. Research findings reveal how social and historical contexts impact youth’s propensity to conduct in youth violence. These social and historical contexts span from the local to the hybrid context; from the Indonesian traditional practices to the global trends of the youth’ social practices. This study illuminates the understanding that youth violence, particularly occurs in the urban area, is complex in nature and the study of youth violence should be placed in wider context. The result study It is widely known that this due to family-based tradition, that is, if one of the family has ever studied at this school, the other family members will follow studying at the same school as their ancestor did. This indicates that in fact parents and students are aware of what happens within the school including various practices of school culture. Studi eksplorasi kualitatif ini menyelidiki konteks sosio-historis yang berdampak pada munculnya kekerasan remaja di daerah perkotaan, Jakarta, Indonesia. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bagaimana sosial dan kecenderungan konteks sejarah dampak muda untuk melakukan kekerasan remaja. Ini konteks sosial dan historis span dari lokal ke konteks hybrid; dari praktek-praktek tradisional Indonesia dengan tren global praktek-praktek sosial pemuda’. Studi ini menerangi pemahaman bahwa kekerasan pemuda, terutama terjadi di daerah perkotaan, adalah kompleks di alam dan studi kekerasan remaja harus ditempatkan dalam konteks yang lebih luas. Hasil penelitian ini secara luas diketahui bahwa ini karena tradisi berbasis keluarga, yaitu, jika salah satu keluarga yang pernah belajar di sekolah ini, anggota keluarga yang lain akan mengikuti belajar di sekolah yang sama seperti nenek moyang mereka lakukan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa sebenarnya orang tua dan siswa menyadari apa yang terjadi di dalam sekolah termasuk berbagai praktik budaya sekolah.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the value of humanity in the film The Giver uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis approach. Described structured and conceptualized to be able to obtain valid and easy to understand data. The description of the data and the explanation of the aspects of the keywords above form a description of the information on research findings in order to obtain the concept of analysis regarding the human value that is to be sought for its existence. This research also aims to provide education and new insights about films that have messages and concepts about life that are different from usual. The film The Giver was chosen because it was deemed sufficient to have criteria as a film that deserves to be analyzed because it has a storyline and sketches of life that are anti-mainstream from others. This research uses semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes who studies the signs that will describe the denotative, connotative and mythical meanings of the story. This film analysis research process requires a high level of focus and commitment in order to obtain the conclusion data to be achieved. The results of this study illustrate how the human values in the film The Giver are not applied or violate human norms which are the fundamentals of a human's life.

Abstract

The study entitled Objectification in Moxie film by Amy Poehler. This study aims to analyze the occurances of the issue of objectification that will be examined by using objectification theory, and feminism appoarch to overcome the issue. The object of this study is the film Moxie (2021) directed by Amy Poehler. The film tells the story about high schoolers rebelling the issues that experienced bycharacters related to the main character which is her friends. Thus, as the guidance, the writer applies ten notions of objectification theory by Tarasenko- Struc (2021). This study uses the qualitative method to present the findings in both essay and picture form by describing the narrative and cinematography elements. This study focuses on the action of objectification experienced by the main character as a witness and how does she deal with it. The results of the study are divided into two events. First, it depicts the occurances of objectification in the main character’s highschool, those are: instrumentality, denial of autonomi, inertness, denial of subjectivity, reduction to body, reduction to appearance, and silncing. Second, the main character’s reaction of the issue of objectification is in the form of rebellion based on solidarity and friendship and primacy concrete relationship.

Abstract

This article is aimed at finding out types of illocutionary acts found in one of the most shocking viral interviews in the world, that is the interview with the royal family of former member, Harry and Meghan Markle interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, with amount of viewership of 4.79 million viewers when it first shows on air. This research is framed within mixed-method approach where the results of the study are in the form of an overview of what is said (illocutionary acts) by the three main subjects, namely Harry, Meghan, and Oprah and the percentage of each type of illocutionary acts. Data analysis was conducted through the analysis of interview videos along with the transcripts, simple statistical analysis and is supported by literature study. The results of the current study show that from 319 data of 644 sentences indicated as illocutionary acts. From those findings, it can be categorized that there are five types of illocutionary acts were found in an interview, they are 63% assertive, 27% directives, 0,6% commissive, 7,3% expressive, and 0,3% declarative. In other words, assertive is found to be the dominant type of illocutionary acts. In addition, of the 319 data, 295 data are categorized as direct speech act and 24 data are indicated as indirect speech act. In short, illocutionary acts of assertive type and direct speech acts are found to be more dominant in Harry and Meghan interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Abstract

This qualitative research is aiming at exploring EFL learners’ stories when writing an essay. To be specific, this research is centered on examining the problems faced by EFL learners when writing essays and their strategies to overcome the problems. Six EFL university students from the third to eighth semesters of the English department at one of private universities in Surabaya participated in the research. The participants were selected based on their ability that is categorized as lower and higher achievers, gender and level of study/semester. The data were generated by interviewing the participants and analyzing their documents work. The data obtained from interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis, while the data from the students’ tasks are classified based on the errors. The later data are used to cross check the data obtained from interviews. The data analysis showed that finding, translating, and realizing suitable ideas into writing and using appropriate tenses and modals grammar were prominent problems of EFL learners. In addition, difficulty to organize paragraphs cohesively and coherently are also noticeable problems. The research results also indicated that the learners were aware of the challenges in writing essays, therefore, they creatively seek strategies to tackle the problems by watching YouTube, TV, news, and reading articles and English books.

Abstract

This research aims to describe how D. Zawawi Imron manipulates or utilizes diction that indicates the character education value of the Pancasila Student Profile as well as the effects caused by the use of this diction in the collection of poems Bulan Tertusuk Lalang and used as an alternative for Indonesian teaching material in vocational schools. This research applies a qualitative descriptive method using a stylistic approach. This research uses data from the poetry collection Bulan Tertusuk Lalang by D. Zawawi Imron and Indonesian language teaching materials at vocational schools. Data collection was carried out using library study techniques. The results of this research are, D. Zawawi Imron manipulates or utilizes language in ways, namely: (1) using words that contain denotational and connotative meanings through expressions (2) using word data with the Pancasila Student Profile as an indirect way of expressing reality. The effect of D. Zawawi Imron's use of diction in the collection of poems Bulan Tertusuk Lalang is that readers can find out the meaning and message of the collection of the poems as well as provide characteristics of the language used by D. Zawawi Imron. As an alternative Indonesian language teaching material in vocational schools because it meets the requirements and criteria for good teaching material or materials. Interestingly, apart from the meaning of connotation and denotation, in these poems we also find archaic diction (ancient words that are no longer commonly used).One of the functions of this archaic diction is as a means of generating visual images for readers and the value of character education with the Pancasila Student Profile. Apart from that, you can also find understanding related to the holy book Al-Quran, stories of the prophet, history of the Majapahit kingdom, and philosophical theories. The results of data analysis also show that this stylistic study can be used as teaching material for Indonesian language and literature in module form.

Abstract

The problems of learning Indonesian can be seen by focusing this study on teaching materials, learning processes, and cultural differences. The design of this research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The data in this research are in the form of speech containing information obtained from notes on the results of questionnaires that have been submitted to foreign students. In accordance with the research objective, namely to describe the problems of learning Indonesian for foreign students of the BIPA program. The data source in this research is the results of a questionnaire obtained from external campus activities carried out by researchers together with foreign students. The results of the research show that there are problems with foreign students when learning Indonesian. Keywords: Problems, teaching materials, learning processes, and cultural differences.
