Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the role of safety meetings in enhancing the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for crew occupational safety aboard KM. Kendhaga Nusantara 6. The research was conducted during the author’s sea practice using a qualitative approach. Primary data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with the Chief Officer, Bosun, and Helmsmen, as well as documentation. Data analysis employed NVivo 12 Pro software following the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that the infrequent implementation of safety meetings—due to the absence of a fixed schedule, operational time constraints, and crew fatigue—was a major factor behind low PPE compliance. Several incidents highlighted this issue, such as crew members working without safety shoes and masks during brushing, resulting in injuries, and a Bosun working on scaffolding without a safety harness. Post-meeting evaluations, conducted through attendance monitoring and observation of workplace behavior, demonstrated that safety meetings held regularly, led by authorized officers, and supported by relevant materials with a positive approach, significantly improved PPE usage. Moreover, these meetings contributed to fostering a stronger safety culture aboard the vessel, encouraging discipline and responsibility among crew members.

Abstract

Hydraulic pipes in the hatch cover system play a crucial role in supporting the smooth loading and unloading of ships. Hydraulic pipe leaks can disrupt operations and require appropriate repair methods to restore system function. This study aims to determine the appropriate repair method to address hydraulic pipe leaks in the hatch cover on the MV. LBN 12. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach through interviews, observations, and documentation and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that previous repair methods were not effective in overcoming leaks. The flush welded patch method was considered an appropriate repair method because it was able to repair leaks more effectively and improve the reliability of the hydraulic system.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors causing delays in the loading and unloading process on board KM Lambelu, a passenger vessel operating on Central and Eastern Indonesian routes. Loading and unloading activities are critical processes that influence voyage schedules, logistics distribution, and passenger service quality. Delays in these activities may result in operational inefficiencies, increased costs, and disruptions to maritime transportation services. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected during the author’s sea practice period aboard KM Lambelu through observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants included ship crew members (ABK), loading and unloading workers (TKBM), and port officials. The data were analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro through data reduction, triangulation, and conclusion drawing to ensure the validity of the findings. The results indicate that delays in the loading and unloading process are influenced by three factors. First, weak coordination and communication between ABK and TKBM lead to misunderstandings and inefficiencies during cargo operations. Second, inadequate port facilities, including limited loading and unloading equipment, insufficient berth capacity, and the lack of tugboat services at several ports, contribute to operational delays. Third, weather conditions and strong ocean currents frequently obstruct berthing maneuvers and slow cargo handling activities.Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening coordination through pre-operational briefings, enhancing TKBM competence through training programs, enforcing work discipline, and improving port infrastructure and equipment availability. Implementing these measures is expected to reduce delays, improve loading and unloading efficiency, and support the enhancement of maritime transportation services in Indonesia effectively, efficiently, and sustainably.
