Abstract

Abstract

Universitas Diponegoro, with an open forest area and planted vegetation of 30 – 40%, produced vast amounts of organic waste, especially tree litter. Piles of tree litter are everywhere if it is not properly managed. Universitas Diponegoro has taken a comprehensive approach to handling leaf and tree litter by converting it into economically valuable and beneficial products to meet the objectives of SDGs 12, which are focused on Responsible Consumption and Production. Through the Technical Implementation Unit for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (UPT K3L) Universitas Diponegoro has pyrolyzed tree branches to create liquid smoke and anaerobically converted leaf waste into compost. Later, the liquid smoke produced by pyrolysis and compost can achieve the consumer demand standard. In addition, from the policy approach, it is mandatory for every building to handle tree litter surrounds into compost using composting pits and composting bags. The circular economy idea has been incorporated into waste management at Universitas Diponegoro.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to figure out the role of halal tourism to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in addition to identifying the factors that promote or hinder the growth of halal tourism in Indonesia. The primary data search procedure utilizes Publish or Perish software in conjunction with two databases, Google Scholar and Scopus. The outcomes of the analysis of the data comprised eight journal articles that were published between 2019 and 2023. This study's results indicate that the development of halal tourism contributes in numerous ways to the attainment of the SDGs. It can alleviate poverty in tourist destinations by generating employment opportunities for locals. Secondly, halal tourism ensures healthy and secure food and beverages. It has additionally equipped infrastructure for public facilities. Nevertheless, the growth of halal tourism in Indonesia encounters numerous impediments, among which is the absence of a comprehensive regulatory framework pertaining to this sector. Whereas, the community and business actors' consent and support for the sustainable management of halal destinations in Indonesia are the driving forces behind its development. Furthermore, these actors engage in collaborative planning and partnerships with other entities concerned with the management and advancement of tourism objects.

Abstract

As a higher education institution with a vision to become a research university, programs and activities related to research are Universitas Diponegoro main concern. Research is one of the three main pillars of higher education in Indonesia, apart from education and community service. Besides that, as a state university, its development is also influenced by central government policies. Currently, Undip is a state university with legal status and has wide autonomy. This paper explains research programs, activities and challenges that still need to be addressed in the future. To increase research capacity at Diponegoro University, there are five main programs, namely: 1. Increasing the capacity of human resources; 2. Improvement of facilities and supporting facilities; 3. Increasing the availability of research funds, 4. Collaboration and 5. Creating a conducive environment to research development at universities. Based on the application of the five programs, there has been a substantial increase in a research capacity, especially when viewed from indicators of international scientific publications, and an increase in the number of patents obtained. But there are still many challenges that need to be overcome, including the increase in the citation of published papers and the utilization of patent by industries.

Abstract

It is estimated that the amount of water needed by Universitas Diponegoro will increase in the years to come. Several efforts are required to ensure the fulfillment of water needed while also considering its sustainability. There have been studies on water conservation at the industrial level. Still, limited studies have discussed this problem in Indonesia specifically at university level. Therefore, this study discusses the water conservation program at Universitas Diponegoro that might be used as a reference for other universities to address water supply problems. This study aims to discuss in depth water conservation efforts at Universitas Diponegoro. This study incorporates a descriptive-qualitative approach along with direct observation. Some programs on water supply have been implemented in Universitas Diponegoro such as conservation, treated water consumed, water recycling and water-efficiency. The existence of rainwater harvesting tanks (RWH), reservoirs, biopores, wastewater treatment plans (WWTPs) and ponds are among the efforts that have been applied at Universitas Diponegoro in order to conserve the water. To date, Universitas Diponegoro has successfully conserved more than 75% of the water, recycling about >50% of wastewater, installing about >50% of water-saving equipment, and has treated clean water into drinking water using reverse osmosis.Keyword: water, conservation, sustainability, campus

Abstract

Order Xiphosura, or horseshoe crabs, are rarely found and classified as macrofossils. In Indonesian waters, there are three species: Tachypleus tridentatus, Tachypleus gigas, and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. The genetic analysis of their kinship, however, has been extensively unexplored. This study aims to utilize DNA barcoding, focusing on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) locus from mitochondrial DNA and investigating the phylogenetic relationships of horseshoe crabs from the four sites (Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency in Jambi, Bangka Regency in Bangka Belitung, Demak Regency in Central Java, and Tuban Regency in East Java). Additionally, the study provides insights into the biodiversity and ecological roles of horseshoe crabs within their ecosystems and surrounding habitats. Through molecular methods, this research focuses on biodiversity analysis through Sanger sequencing and MEGA 11 software for constructing phylogenetic trees and calculating genetic distances. With a total of 22 horseshoe crabs, the DNA samples from four different sites were amplified via Sanger sequencing, targeting the COI locus and analyzing with MEGA 11. The phylogenetic tree analysis revealed two distinct species, Tachypleus gigas, and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, exhibiting significant genetic variation between them. A clear genetic separation between the two species was observed. Otherwise, within the C. rotundicauda species, a minor genetic variation was detected between sampling sites. Notably, the genetic composition displayed greater differences between samples from Java and Sumatra compared to differences within each island. The future research should expand the sampling size and include additional genetic markers to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of horseshoe crabs in Indonesian waters. Integrating ecological and environmental data could further elucidate the factors driving genetic differentiation and inform conservation strategies.
