Abstract

Logging activity is one of the factors which changes the structure of forest stand. The objective of this study was to determine the species composition and development of forest stand structure in the IUPHHK-HA area of PT. Barito Putera, Central Kalimantan, especially on the logged over area (LOA) of year 2002, 2007, 2012, and also on the pre-logged area of year 2014 as a comparison (primary forest). Based on observations which have been made, species Shorea leprosula were dominant with different rates of growth in each observation area. Growth development of the stand on logged over area can be said to be normal, because it is in the process toward a normal forest conditions. Potency of the stand before felling in 2014 was 103 trees/ha for the nucleus trees, and 49 trees/ha with volume of 317.25 m3/ha of mature timber (ready to be harvested). On LOA of year 2012, the number of core trees was 77 trees/ha, and 51 trees/ha for mature timber (ready to harvested) with a volume of 584.84 m3/ha. LOA in 2007 exhibited the nucleus trees as many as 93 trees/ha and 53 trees/ha of mature timber (ready to be harvested) with a volume of 427.95 m3/ha. LOA in 2002 exhibited nucleus trees as many as 75 trees/ha and 59 trees/ha of mature timber (ready to harvested) with a volume of 442.41 m3/ha. The differences of growth development in the observation area were probably caused by illegal logging activities that occur in the forest area, and the damage of residual stand (including nucleus trees) as a result of logging and log transportation activities. Logged over forest conditions can be said to be in balance because there were more than 25 nucleus trees/ha remaining, appropriate to the Selective Cutting and Line Planting (TPTJ) regulations, which indicates that the logged over forest can be utilized in subsequent cutting rotation.Key words: composition, Dipterocarp forest, logged-over area, core tree, stand structure.

Abstract

Since 1978 one of the legal silviculture systems in Indonesian regard to managing mangrove forest is seed tree method. The ability of this silviculture system to recruit the seeds to fulfill the regeneration is one of the importantaspects. The research is conducted to get the information about regeneration condition and the ability of seed tree method to recruit the regeneration in any various plot with different agecutting. Vegetation analysis for naturalregeneration (seedlings and saplings) were conducted at four different age logged-over area with the total 640 plots. The plot size is 78.5 m2. The result showed that existence of seed tree can affect the type of regeneration for seedlings recruitment with percentage between 59.52% to 83.37%.Key words: mangrove, natural regeneration, seed tree, seedling recruitment

Abstract

Fagraea fragrans known as tembesu is a tree species used for panel wood (MDF, medium density fiberboard), particle board, veneer and furniture. The aim of this experiment was to know successful growth origin of shoot cutting F. fragrans and to study the effect of combination treatment the origin of cutting material and media F. fragrans. The shoot cutting was done with KOFFCO system. The results showedthat the cutting material from seedling juvenile shoot provided 61.56% of shoot formation, 91.42% of survivorship and 76.33% root formed. In addition, origin material from seedling juvenile gave a significantly effect on root length and wet root weight, wet shoot weight, dry root weight and significant on dry shoot weight parameter. The increasing age of the parent tree, diminishing cuttings success. The cuttings media cocopeat (coir dust) with paddy husk gives very significant effect on root length parameter, significant on wet root weight and gave very significant effect on root dry wet. There is an interaction between the cuttings material with cutting media, for root length parameter, wet root weight and dry root weight.

Abstract

Acacia nilotica is an invasive species which is difficult to eradicate up to present.  A. nilotica is a fast growing species of savanna tree, and therefore is supposed probably to have relatively high biomass and carbon content.  The objective of this research was to develop allometric equation of biomass and estimating the carbon storage potential in A. nilotica stand in Baluran National Park.   This research used destructive method on 9 sample trees to construct allometric equation. For measuring biomass potency, vegetation analysis was conducted using 3 plots, measuring 100 m x 100 m each on the basis of A nilotica stand density categorization (high, medium, and low).  For obtaining data of carbon potency, biomass value was multiplied with 0,47.  Research results show that the selected allometric equation for tree total is W=0,34 D1,97 with R2of 98,4. Average biomass potency was as large as 25 tons/ha.   Average carbon potency was 11,92 ton/ha.   Management of A. niloticain Baluran National Park, in moderate and low density stand can be in the form of clear cutting, whereas high density stand can be maintained for carbon sequestration and utilization by the people community for supplying seeds, livestock feeds, firewood or charcoal briquette.
