Abstract

Gunung Dahu Research Forest is a forest area dominated by meranti species. The presence of human activity in forest areas has the potential to bring in invasive species. The presence of invasive plant species can have negative impacts on the ecosystem. This research aims to estimate canopy density in the Gunung Dahu Research Forest using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and its relationship with the diversity of invasive understory species to produce appropriate management recommendations. The canopy density class map was made using a desk study and the understorey data was taken using vegetation analysis. Correlation and regression tests were conducted to determine the relationship between NDVI values and other variables. Based on the results of the NDVI analysis, three canopy density classes were obtained, low, medium, and high. The low canopy density class has the highest number of invasive species, while the high canopy density class has the least number of invasive plant species. The Poaceae family is the most found family with D. setigera as the dominant invasive species. There is a strong correlation between canopy density and NDVI values. Abstract

Forest and peatland fires are serious environmental issues in Indonesia, including in Jambi Province. This study aims to identify fire hazard levels based on peatland vegetation density using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method in the Sungai Buluh Peat Protected Forest (HLG), Jambi. NDVI data were obtained from satellite imagery and analyzed to assess vegetation density, which was then correlated with fire hazard levels. A total of 12 plots measuring 50 m x 50 m each were established. Based on NDVI analysis, density classes were divided into class 1 (0.0573-0.307), class 2 (0.307-0.398), and class 3 (0.398-0.584). The study area was predominantly occupied by rengas laut stands. The results indicated that areas with low NDVI values have a higher fire risk compared to areas with high NDVI values. The dominant stand type was rengas laut. NDVI and humidity showed the highest correlation (0.780).

Abstract

Forest fire constitutes a major ecological disturbance that induces substantial alterations in ecosystem structure and function, particularly affecting vegetation and soil properties. The Mount Lawu forest, situated within the management unit of BKPH Lawu Selatan, KPH Lawu Ds, has undergone multiple fire events over the past two decades. This study aims to examine characteristics across distinct successional stages, assess soil physicochemical attributes, and identify potential pioneer species capable of adapting to post-fire environments. The investigation was conducted across three successional stages represented by shrubland (burned in 2019), young secondary forest (burned in 2015), and old secondary forest (burned in 2002). Vegetation sampling employed nested plot design, while soil analysis included measurements of pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, and bulk density. The findings reveal successional shifts in species dominance from Imperata cylindrica and Schima wallichii in early stages to Lithocarpus sundaicus in mature forest stands. The assessment of physical and chemical soil properties showed variable results. Biomass accumulation increased along the successional gradient, indicating enhanced ecosystem development. Soil variables exhibited patterns in relation to vegetation structure and biomass.
