Abstract

Kusmana C, Hidayat T, Istomo, Rusdiana O. 2018. Growth performance of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza derived from cut-propagule seedling. Biodiversitas 19: 208-214. The availability and existence of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza seed sources is getting decreased. This causes the generative reproduction of this plant is limited. The present research was carried out to study the growth performance of B. gymnorrhiza derived from vegetative cut-propagule seedling by employing different type of cut-propagule, the provision of root promoting hormones, and the provision of NPK fertilizer. The research was conducted at the Greenhouse for 6 months using a completely randomized design (CRD) 3x3x2 factorial with five replications. The results showed that B. gymnorrhiza could be propagated by cut-propagule. Seedlings growth which derived from complete propagule apparently had a better performance than those derived from cut-propagule. Roots derived from complete propagule and the bottom part of cut-propagule grow faster than the top part of cut-propagule. Two types of shoot such as shoot existing before planting which was derived from complete propagule and top part of cut-propagule; and shoots existing after planting called as adventitious shoot derived from the bottom part of cut-propagule has been formed. Unfortunately, new complete shoots derived from the bottom part of cut-propagule was not formed. Furthermore, there was no significant effect of root promoting hormone and NPK fertilizer induction on the shoot and root growth of B. gymnorrhiza.

Abstract. Hartoyo APP, Khairunnisa S, Pamoengkas P, Solikhin A, Supriyanto, Siregar IZ, Prasetyo LB, Istomo. 2022. Estimating carbon stocks of three traditional agroforestry systems and their relationships with tree diversity and stand density. Biodiversitas 23: 6137-6146. One of the important sectors as a strategy for climate resilience and low carbon development in Indonesia is Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) including the agroforestry sector. Carbon stock and tree diversity in an ecosystem are dynamic over time and still need to be investigated. This study was aimed: i) to estimate aboveground carbon stocks in the traditional agroforestry of Mount Halimun Salak National Park (MHSNP), in Kampung Birang and Kampung Merabu, East Kalimantan, as well as ii) to analyze the correlation between carbon stock with tree diversity and stand density in traditional agroforestry of Mount Halimun Salak National Park (MHSNP), in Kampung Birang and Kampung Merabu, East Kalimantan. The total plots were 75 plots (a plot size of 50x50 m), and carbon stock estimation was focused on pole and tree levels. The average carbon stock in the traditional zone of MHSNP, Kampung Birang, and Kampung Merabu respectively was 51.02 Mg C/ha, 96.25 Mg C/ha, and 82.17 Mg C/ha. The carbon stock in traditional agroforestry of all study sites was very significantly affected by the basal area (m2/ha) (p-val<0.05) with a strong correlation (r = 80% and 97%). The carbon stock was affected by stand density (p-val<0.1) with a very low correlation (r = 27.3%). The carbon stock was very significantly affected by total species (p-val<0.05). However, it had a weak correlation (r = 28.0%). In agroforestry systems, how to manage the agroforestry, socio-economic aspects, ecological site, and market are the main factor in species selection and species maintenance by landowners that indirectly influence biodiversity conservation effort and carbon stock value. The agroforestry system has the potential to become a target and priority location for Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 by providing non-timber forest products, which can avoid leakage in forest conservation efforts and carbon stock.

Abstract

Abstract. Istomo, Kusmana C, Dwiyanti FG, Malik D. 2020. Comparison of several methods of stands inventory prior to logging towards the yield volume of mangrove forest in Bintuni Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1438-1447. The difference between the estimated volume and the actual harvested volume is the reason that mangrove forest management is unsustainable. To overcome this discrepancy, it is important to do what so called Inventarisasi Tegakan Sebelum Penebangan (ITSP) or stands inventory prior to logging for logging concession. However, the study on suitable ITSP methods for mangrove forests has been limited. This study aims to assess three ITSP methods (namely Line Strip Sampling Method, Line Systematic Sampling Method, and CIFOR’s Modified Method) using two allometric equations (i.e., equation developed specifically by a logging concession and equation developed that has specific formula for each species), and to select the combination of method and allometric equation that produce the highest accuracy for logging concession in mangrove forest, especially in Bintuni Bay, West Papua. The results showed that CIFOR’s Modified Method produces the lowest discrepancy between the estimated volume and the actual harvested volume, followed by Line Strip Sampling Method. In addition, regardless the ITSP methods employed, the allometric equation by Cole et al. (1999) outperforms the equation developed specifically by a logging concession. While producing the lowest discrepancy with plot size is the smallest than other methods, CIFOR’s Modified Method has a disadvantage when applied in the field due to difficulties in making a circular plot. As such, we recommend ITSP method to be used is the Line Strip Sampling method with allometric equation.

Abstract

Rubber stands (Hevea brasiliensis) not only function economically, but also have an ecological contribution as a carbon sink in the atmosphere. This study aims to estimate carbon stocks and CO₂ absorption in smallholder rubber stands based on age classes (II, IV, and V) in Karya Makmur Village (land A) and Nikan Village (land B), East OKU Regency. Data were obtained by measuring tree diameter and height in 24 plots, then calculating volume and biomass, and converting them into carbon stocks and CO₂ absorption. Statistical analysis included Spearman correlation tests and simple linear regression tests. The results of this study indicate that H. brasiliensis stands in East OKU Regency have carbon stocks and CO₂ absorption that increase with age. In land A, the highest average carbon stock was 227.46 tons/ha in KU V, with CO₂ absorption of 834.79 tons/ha. In land B, KU IV had an average carbon stock of 158.10 tons/ha and CO₂ absorption of 583.58 tons/ha. Statistical tests demonstrate a strong positive relationship between age and carbon content. This research strengthens the role of rubber community forests as a solution to climate change mitigation.
