Abstract

Background: Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their derivatives have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Objective: This review evaluated the effectiveness of MSC-based interventions in modulating oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disease models. Methods: A structured narrative review search was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines using PubMed and Scopus databases for studies published between 2020 and 2025, with the last search in December 2025. Results: 33 studies met the inclusion criteria, primarily involving Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease models. Overall, MSC-based therapies reduced oxidative stress markers, enhanced antioxidant defenses, activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, improved mitochondrial function, and reduced neuroinflammation in experimental neurodegenerative disease models.

Abstract

Blastocystis sp., an intestinal protozoan widely distributed in the human gastrointestinal tract, exhibits a global presence, with prevalence varying by region and generally higher in developing countries compared to developed ones. In Indonesia, reported prevalence varies considerably by region and study population, ranging from approximately 34% to 72% in several regional studies. This protozoan is water-borne and primarily transmitted through cysts via the fecal-oral route. Factors such as poor hygiene, immigration, travel to tropical developing countries, contact with animals, and consumption of contaminated food or water elevate the risk of infection. The pathogenesis in humans remains unclear, as infections may either manifest symptoms or remain asymptomatic, partly due to diagnostic limitations and variation in virulence across subtypes. This review aims to elucidate the characteristics and pathogenicity of Blastocystis sp. subtypes, particularly ST3, which is frequently dominant in symptomatic patients, and to discuss ongoing controversies in the literature.

Abstract

Background: Community-based preventive screening is important for reducing non-communicable disease risk among adult women, particularly those who influence household health practices. However, screening activities frequently emphasize Body Mass Index (BMI), although BMI alone may not adequately describe central adiposity, elevated blood pressure, and functional health indicators. This community service article aimed to describe the implementation of health education and integrated screening involving anthropometric, physiological, and functional measurements among female guardians at Yayasan Tarbiyatul Yatim, East Jakarta, Indonesia.Aims: This study aimed to (1) implement a community-based health education and screening program for adult female participants, (2) assess anthropometric, physiological, and functional health indicators including blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference, and hand grip strength, and (3) identify the prevalence of potential cardiometabolic and functional risk markers beyond BMI.Methods: This activity was implemented on January 8, 2026 using a preventive-promotive community service framework with descriptive program evaluation. Thirty-two adult female participants joined health education, screening, and individual consultation. The community service dataset included blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, body temperature, body weight, height, BMI, waist circumference, hand grip strength, health history, lifestyle profile, and current complaints. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency, percentage, mean, median, standard deviation, and range.Result: The participants had a mean age of 49.8 years. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 129.2 mmHg and 78.8 mmHg, respectively. Mean BMI was 24.9 kg/m²; 16/32 participants (50.0%) were categorized as normal, 9/32 (28.1%) overweight, 4/32 (12.5%) obese, and 3/32 (9.4%) underweight. Mean waist circumference was 97.7 cm, and 29/32 participants (90.6%) had waist circumference >80 cm. Mean hand grip strength was 16.5 kg, and 21/32 participants (65.6%) had values <18 kg.Conclusion: Integrated screening beyond BMI is feasible in community service settings and can help identify potential cardiometabolic and functional risk indicators that require counseling or referral. Future activities should include documented repeat measurements for abnormal findings, structured pretest-posttest educational evaluation, biochemical testing, and referral follow-up.

Abstract

Lead is a known heavy metal from human history to date for various uses, abuses and toxicities. Lead poisoning has been recognized as one of the most serious environmental health issues worldwide, especially children living in developing countries. Lead can damage or affect the organs of the body, among others, the nervous system, kidneys, reproductive system, and heart, as well as disturbances in the brain so that intellectual and mental disorders in the brain. This study aims to see the effect of lead on the number of neurons in the hippocampus in mice experimental animals. The mice used amounted to 10 tails and divided into two for the control group and the treatment group. The control group, each of which was 5 tails, was then given unbleached drinking water while the treatment group was given drinking water mixed with acetate with concentration of 1000ppm for 17 days in adlibitum. The observations were taken from each of the 5 fields of view on each preparation with a magnification of 40x. The calculation of the number of neuron cells is then analyzed descriptive statistics and different test. The result showed that control group with mean ± SD were 127,6 ± 7,9, and for treatment group that was 80,0 ± 20,9. T independent test result showed p = 0,001 (p <0,05) which means that there was a significant difference between control and treatment group. The conclusion of this research is the existence of neuron cell damage in mice that get treatment. By showing the number of neurons less than the control mice. Suggestion to develop this research hence need to continue research to find neuro protector compound specially from lead work in brain.

Abstract

Abstract

Understanding how the body produces and utilizes energy during exercise is key to enhancing athletic performance and refining training strategies. This systematic review analyzes recent studies on the contributions of the phosphagen (ATP-PCr), glycolytic (anaerobic), and oxidative (aerobic) energy systems in various sports. The review follows PRISMA 2020 guidelines and includes studies published between 2020 and 2025, selected from Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Energy system contributions were evaluated using markers such as oxygen uptake, substrate utilization, blood lactate levels, and ATP turnover rates. The review finds that in high-intensity, short-duration events like the 100m sprint, the phosphagen system accounts for 70%, while glycolytic and oxidative systems contribute 25% and 5%, respectively. In endurance events such as marathons, oxidative metabolism dominates, contributing 85–95% of total energy. Sports with mixed intensity, such as soccer and basketball, show dynamic contributions, with oxidative metabolism at 50–60%, phosphagen at 20–30%, and glycolytic at 15–25%. These results highlight the importance of sport-specific training to optimize energy system interactions and performance.
