Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to identify kinds of speech acts produced by the lecturers of English Education Department of Undiksha during the teaching and learning process and identify the instructional functions of those kinds of speech acts. The subjects of this study were 2 lecturers who taught the first semester students of English Education Department of UNDIKSHA Singaraja in academic year 2013/2014. This study was a qualitative study and was conducted in the classroom during the teaching and learning process by two lecturers of English Education Department UNDIKSHA. The data were obtained through recording, interview and also observation. The data collected were the lecturers’ utterances. They were transcribed, selected and reduced until the data needed were found. Then, the data obtained were descriptively analyzed. The findings of the study showed that the lecturers used representative, directive, commisive, expressive and declarative speech acts in the classroom. Based on 121 example utterances, lecturers mostly used directive speech acts, it was 41.32%of 121 utterances. According to the interview, it was also found that lecturers uttered directive speech acts in order to make students clearly understood the meaning and avoid understanding. Thus, it was very important for students to understand what lecturers/teacher uttered to avoid misconceptions, miscommunication or misunderstanding.Kata Kunci : Key Terms: utterances, speech acts ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis tindak tutur yang diucapkan oleh dosen Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UNDIKSHA saat kegiatan belajar mengajar dan juga mengidentifikasi fungsi pengajaran dari jenis tindak tutur tersebut. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 2 dosen yang mengajar mahasiswa semester satu Jurusan Bahasa Inggris UNDIKSHA Singaraja tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Penilitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan di dalam kelas saat pengajaran dilakukan oleh kedua dosen di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggiris UNDIKSHA. Data didapatkan melalui perekaman, wawancara dan observasi.Data yang dikkumpulkan merupakan ucapan dosen. Semua itu dideskripsikan, dipilih dan dikurangi hingga data yang diperlukan diperoleh. Kemudian, data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dosen menggunakan tindak tutur berupa representative, directive, commisive, expressive dan declarative. Berdasarkan 121 contoh ucapan dosen, dosen lebih sering menggunakan tindak tutur directive, yaitu 41.32% dari 121 sample. Sesuai dengan hasil wawancara, juga ditemukan bahwa dosen menggunakan tindak tutur directive dengan tujuan membuat siswa lebih mudah memahami dan menghindari kesalahpahaman. Sehingga, sangatlah penting agar mahasiswa memahami apa yang dosen ucapkan untuk menghindari konsep, komunikasi dan pemahaman yang salah.keyword : Key Terms: ucapan, tindak tutur

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya perbedaan yang berarti antara siswa yang diajarkan dengn menggunakan Teknik Clustering dikombinasikan dengan Peer Assessment dan siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakana teknik menulis yang konvensional. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah Post-test Only Control Group Design. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 68 siswa yang dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik random sampling. Hasil analisis memperlihatkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang berarti dalam kemampuan menulis antara siswa yang diajarakan dengan menggunakan teknik clustering dikombinasikan dengan peer assessment dan siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan teknik menulis konvensional (tobs = -7.322, Sig. 0.001) diaman siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan teknik clustering dikombinasikan dengan peer assessment memiliki kemampuan menulis yang lebih baik.Kata Kunci : Kemampuan menulis, Teknik Clustering dan Peer Assessment This study was aimed at investigating whether there was a significant difference in writing competency of students who were taught by using Clustering Technique combined with Peer Assessment and those who were taught by using Conventional Writing Technique. The research design of this study was Posttest Only Control Group Design. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. The sample of this study was 68 students which were selected by using random sampling technique. Result of analysis show that there is a difference in writing competency between students taught by using Clustering Technique combined with Peer Assessment and those taught by using conventional writing technique, (tobs = -7.322, Sig. 0.001) in which the students taught by using Clustering Technique combined with Peer Assessment achieve better in writing achievement.keyword : Writing Competency, Clustering Technique, and Peer Assessment

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan kategori dari interaksi kelas yang terjadi di kelas sebelas SMA N 4 Singarja berdasarkan Foreign Language Interaction Analysis (FLINT) System, kategori yang paling sering muncul, dan level dari kompetensi siswa setelah proses belajar mengajar. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru dan siswa di kelas XI MIA 2 dan XI MIA 3. Peneliatian ini dirancang menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian menjunjukkan bahwa: (1) seluruh kategori dari interaksi kelas berdasarkan FLINT system ditemukan selama proses belajar mengajar. Kategori-kategori kersebut adalah Deals with Feeling, Praise and Encourages, Jokes, Uses Ideas of Student, Repeats Student Response Verbatim, Asks questions, Gives information, Corrects without Rejection, Gives Direction, Direct Pattern Drills, Criticizes Student Behavior, Criticizes Student Response, Student Response Specific, Student Response Choral, Student Response Open-Ended or Student Initiated, Silence, Silence AV, Confusion Work-Oriented, Confusion non work-oriented, Laughter, Uses of Native Language and Nonverbal. (2) Kategori dari teacher talk yang sering terjadi adalah asking question sedangkan kategori dari student talk yang sering muncul adalah student response, open ended or student initiated. (3) rata-rata nilai dari kompetensi siswa dari seluruh observasi adalah 79. Itu berarti kategori dari nilai tersebut adalah B-. Walaupun hasil dari observasi menujukkan bahwa student talk lebih dari teacher talk, namun penggunaan bahasa ibu sangat sering digunakan ketika observasi.Kata Kunci : Foreign Language Interaction (FLINT) system, Interaksi Kelas, Kompetensi Bahasa Inggris, Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris This study aimed at finding the classroom interaction categories occurring in the eleventh grade of SMA N 4 Singaraja based on Foreign Language Interaction Analysis (FLINT) System, category which most frequently occurred, and level of the student’s competency after teaching and learning process. The subjects of the study were two teachers and students in XI MIA 2 and XI MIA 3. This study was designed by using descriptive qualitative research. The result of the research shows that: (1) all categories of classroom interaction based on FLINT system exist during the teaching learning process. Those are Deals with Feeling, Praise and Encourages, Jokes, Uses Ideas of Student, Repeats Student Response Verbatim, Asks questions, Gives information, Corrects without Rejection, Gives Direction, Direct Pattern Drills, Criticizes Student Behavior, Criticizes Student Response, Student Response Specific, Student Response Choral, Student Response Open-Ended or Student Initiated, Silence, Silence AV, Confusion Work-Oriented, Confusion non work-oriented, Laughter, Uses of Native Language and Nonverbal. (2) The teacher talk category that mostly occurs is asking question while student talk category that mostly appears is student response, open ended or student initiated (3) the average score of the students’ competency from all of the observation is 79. It means the category of the average score was B-. Abstract

Penelitian Experimen ini bertujuan untuk meneliti efek dari Lexical Collocation pada kemampuan membaca siswa. Untuk melakukan penelitian, 72 siswa telah dipilih sebagai sample. Mereka adalah siswa kelas X MIPA di SMAN 4 Singaraja. Kelompok siswa diberikan lotere, dan hasinya adalah siswa kelas X MIPA 2 terpilih sebagai kelompok Eksperiemen, dan X MIPA 3 sebagai kelompok kontrol. Metode yang digunakan adalah Posttest Only Control Group Design. KElompok Eksperimental diberikan perlakuan berupa Collocation dan kelompok kontrol diberikan perlakuan berupa metode pembelajaran konvensional. Di akhir penelitian, kedua kelompok diberikan post test. Post test yang diberikan berupa tes kemampuan membaca, yang berisi 20 buah test objektif. Data yang didapatkan dianalisis dengan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Penelitian ini menggunakan hipotesis alternatif. Hasil dari t test yaitu t observasi lebih tinggi daripada t tabel dengan nilai 2.03, yaitu 5.14. Dari hasil ini, hipotesis nol ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif diterima. Hipotesis nol yang ditolak berarti ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan Lexical Collocation dan yang tidak.Kata Kunci : Lexical Collocation, Pembelajaran membaca konvensional, kemampuan membaca. This experimental research aimed at investigating the effect of Lexical Collocation on students’ reading comprehension achievement. To conduct the research, 72 students were selected as the samples. They were the tenth grade students of science major at SMAN 4 Singaraja. The group of students were given the lottery, and the result showed that the X MIPA 2 was experimental group and X MIPA 3 was the control group. The design used in this research was Post Test Only Control Group Design. The experimental group was given collocation as treatment and the control group was taught by using a conventional teaching method. At the end, both experimental and control groups were given the post test. The post test was a reading comprehension test, consist of 20 multiple choices. The data obtained by the post test were analyzed by using Descriptive and Inferential Statistic Analyses. This study used alternative hypothesis. The result of t test in which t observed was higher than t critical value 2.03 was 5.14. Based on the result, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The rejected null hypothesis means that there is significant difference on reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using collocation and who were not. keyword : Lexical Collocation, Conventional teaching reading, Reading comprehension

Abstract

This study was a correlational study with ex-post facto research design, which aimed at investigating (1) the contribution of metacognitive awareness on students’ academic achievement, (2) the contribution of learning environment on students’ academic achievement, (3) the simultaneous contribution of metacognitive awareness and learning environment on academic achievement of the fourth semester students of English Education Department, Ganesha University of Education in academic years 2015/2016. Ex-post facto research design was a research design to investigate the correlation between independent variables and dependent variable by (1) determining the sample, (2) designing and developing the questionnaires, (3) distributing the questionnaires, (4) analyzing the obtained data, and (5) drawing the conclusion. The sample of the study was chosen by using simple random sampling technique, in which there were 145 students. The analysis was conducted based on multiple linear regression test supported by SPSS version 16 program. This study reveals that: (1) there is no contribution of metacognitive awareness on students’ academic achievement; (2) there is no contribution of learning environment on students’ academic achievement; and (3) there is no contribution of metacognitive awareness and learning environment on students’ academic achievement. keyword : metacognitive awareness, academic achievement, learning environment

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui kategori-kategori speech acts yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan belajar-mengajar di SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengajar di kelas VIII.2 dan VIII.4 SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. Data dikumpulkan melalui proses observasi, rekaman, transkripsi, mencatat, mengkode, danwawancara. Kemudian, data yang berhasil dikumpulkan, dianalisis dengan model analisis Miles dan Huberman. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa terdapat 10 kategori speech acts yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris di SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja, yaitu: representative, directive, directive need statement, directive imperative, directive embedded imperative, directive permission, directive question, directive hint, commisive, expression, effective, verdictive, dan quotation. Abstract

Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meneliti apakah ada efek yang signifikan dari pengguanaan snake and ladder board game terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris pebelajar anak-anak, terutama siswa-siswi sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini adalah sebuah penelitian eksperimen dengan menggunakan post-test only control group design. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas empat di sekolah dasar Sukasada, kabupaten Buleleng tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling untuk memilih sampel. Ada dua kelas yang terpilih sebagai sampel, SD Negeri 2 Sukasada sebagai kelompok kontrol dan SD Negeri 3 Sukasada sebagai kelompok eksperimen. Data dianalisis menggunakan analisis statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil-hasil memperlihatkan bahwa rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol yang diajar mengguanakan teknik konvensional adalah 79.6 dan rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen yang diajar menggunakan snake and ladder board game adalah 84.1. Hasil dari penghitungan sampel independen t-test menunjukan nilai dari tobs (t observation) adalah 4.791 dimana tcv (t critical value) dalam signifikansi alfa 0.05 (5%) dan tingkat kebebasan 62 adalah 1.998. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa snake and ladder board game memberikan efek yang signifikan terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa kelas empat sekolah dasar di Sukasada, Kabupaten Buleleng tahun ajar 2015/2016.Kata Kunci : Prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris, snake and ladder board game, pebelajar anak-anak The main purpose of this research is to investigate whether there is any significant effect of snake and ladder board game on young learners’ English learning achievement, especially the fourth grade students of elementary school. This research was an experimental research using post-test only control group design. The population of this study was 103 fourth grade students of elementary school in Sukasada, Buleleng regency in academic year 2015/2016. This research used cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples. There were two classes as the samples, SD Negeri 2 Sukasada as the control group and SD Negeri 3 Sukasada as the experimental group. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistic analysis. The results showed that the mean score of control group that was taught by conventional technique was 79.6 and the mean score of experimental group that was taught by snake and ladder board game was 84.1. The result of the independent sample t-test calculation showed the value of tobs (t observed) was 4.791 where the tcv (t critical value) in alpha significance 0.05 (5%) and the degree of freedom 62 was 1.998. It could be inferred that the tobs (t observed) was higher than the tcv (t critical value). It can be concluded that snake and ladder board game gives the significant effect on students’ English learning achievement of the fourth grade students of elementary school in Sukasada, Buleleng regency in 2015/2016 academic year.keyword : English learning achievement, snake and ladder board game, young learners

Abstract

Penelitian in bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan interlingual dan intralingual dalam penggunaan simple past tense pada teks recount. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam descriptive qualitative research. Subjek penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas 8 SMP N 1 Banjar. Data yang diperoleh bersumber dari beberapa instrumen, yaitu tes menulis dan interview. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 749 kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa dalam tulisannya. Jenis error yang paling banyak muncul pada tulisan siswa adalah kesalahan intralingual dengan frekuensi kemunculan sebesar 445 atau 59.42 %. Sedangkan kesalahan interlingual sebesar 304 atau 40.58 %. Penyebab dari kesalahan siswa adalah kurangnya pengalaman siswa terhadap bahasa target dalam proses penguasaan bahasa inggris dan siswa tidak terbiasa dengan struktur kalimat dalam bahasa inggris, sehingga siswa memilih untuk menggunakan bahasa pertama dalam menyusun kalimat.Kata Kunci : kesalahan interlingual, kesalahan intralingual, simple past tense, teks recount. This study intended to identify the interlingual and intralingual errors in using simple past tense in recount text. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Banjar were subjects of this study. The data were collected by using several instruments, namely: writing task and interview guide. The results of the study showed that there were total 749 errors committed by the students in their writing. The type of error that most frequently occurred in students’ writings was intralingual error with 445 occurrences or 59.42 %. Meanwhile interlingual error was 304 occurrences or 40.58 %. The causes of student’ errors were mostly their limited experience about the target language as they were in the process of mastering English and they were not familiar with sentence structures of English so that they preferred to use their mother’ tongue in constructing the sentences.keyword : interlingual error, intralingual error, simple past tense, recount text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan prestasi kosa kata bahasa inggris murid kelas 5 SDN 1 Sebatu dengan menggunakan wayang sebagai media.Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah kelas 5 SDN 1Sebatu dengan jumlah 41 murid. Penelitian ini menggunakan prosedur Classroom Action Research (PTK) dan Diselesaikan dalam dua siklus. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa pembelajaran menggunakan wayang sebagai media dapat meningkatkan prestasi kosa kata murid kelas 5 SDN 1 Sebatu. Hasil post-test II menunjukan bahwa nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh dari murid kelas 5 berjumlah 82.31.Sedangkan hasil test awal (pre-test) nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh berjumah 51.00. Persentase jumlah murid yang lulus tes juga meningkat dari 39.03% menjadi 58.54%. Hasil dari pecentase kelulusan yang diperoleh dari post-test II dengan jumlah 97.56% sudah melebihi dari target yang ditetapkan dengan jumlah 85.00%. Hasil kuesioner juga menunjukan bahwa murid memberikan kesan yang positif terhadap pembelajaran bahasa inggris dengan menggunkan wayang sebagai media. Pembelajaran bahasa inggris menggunakan wayang sebagai media dapat meningkatkan motivasi dan konsentrasi belajar.Kata Kunci : wayang, prestasi kosa kata This study aimed at improving the achievement of the fifth grade students of SDN 1 Sebatu in English vocabulary by using puppets as teaching media. The subjects of this study were the fifth grade students of SDN 1 Sebatu which consisted of 41 students. The study was conducted by following the action research procedures and it was completed in two cycles. The result of the study showed that achievement of the fifth grade students in English vocabulary could be improved by using puppets. The result of post-test II showed that the students’ mean score was 82.31 which significantly improved from the pre-test result that was 51.00. The class percentage of the students passing the test also improved from 39.02% to 58.54%. The total class percentage of the students passing the test was 97.56 % which was beyond the expected target which was 85.00%. Based on the questionnaire result, the students also had positive response towards the implementation of the puppets. The result showed that learning English using puppets could improve their motivation, interest, attention, and concentration.keyword : puppets, vocabulary achievement

Abstract

Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kualitatif deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisa karakteristik dan faktor yang menyebabkan Bahasa Inggris Pidgin yang digunakan oleh para pedagang di pantai Tulamben. Subyek penelitian ini adalah tujuh pedagang berusia antara 35-45 tahun. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa peneliti sendiri, alat perekam, lemba robservasi, dan daftar wawancara. Data yang terkumpul dianalisa berdasarkan langkah-langkahan alisa yang diajukan oleh Gale, dkk (2013). Analisa karakteristik Bahasa Pidgin di dasarkan pada teoriIsa, Halilu, & Ahmed (2015) dan Holmes (1992). Sedangkan analisa factor penyebab Bahasa Pidgin didasarkan pada teori Richard dan Schmidt (2002 dalam Setiyono, 2012). Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Bahasa Inggris Pidgin di pantai Tulamben sudah memenuhi criteria untuk bias diangap sebagai Bahasa Pidgin dengan mempertimbangkan fungsi bahasa, struktur bahasa dan ucapan yang digunakan. Sedangkan factor penyebabnya di identifikasi ada tiga faktor, yaitu factor bahasa, ekonomi dan pendidikan. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut maka disarankan kepada Pemda Karangasem untuk menyediakan pendidikan informal kepada para pedagang tersebut untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka menjadi Bahasa Inggris standar. Kata Kunci : pantai Tulamben, pidgin This study was a descriptive qualitative study aimed at analysing the characteristics and factors creating Pidgin English used by sellers in Tulamben Beach. There are seven sellers aged 35 – 45 years old as the subjects of this study. The instruments of this study were the researcher, recorder, observation sheet, and interview guide. The collected data were analyzed based on the steps of data analysis proposed by Gale, et al (2013). The analysis of characteristics of Pidgin is based on the theory proposed by Isa, Halilu, & Ahmed (2015) and Holmes (1992). Meanwhile, the analysis of factors creating Pidgin is based on theory proposed by Richard and Schmidt (2002, in Setiyono, 2012). This study found that Pidgin in Tulamben Beach has fulfilled the criteria of being pidgin which were considered from its language function, structure and pronunciation. There were three factors creating Pidgin in Tulamben, namely language, economic, and educational factors. Related to these findings, it is suggested that the government of Karangasem Regency should provide the sellers informal education in order to improve their English to be Standard English. keyword : pidgin, Tulamben beach
