Abstract

The escalating cost of healthcare necessitates accurate prediction methods for determining medical insurance premiums. This research compares the performance of three nonlinear regression models, namely Polynomial, Ridge, and Lasso, in estimating individual health insurance costs. The research process follows the CRISP-DM framework, which includes the stages of business understanding, data processing, modeling, and evaluation. The dataset used is the Medical Cost Personal Dataset from Kaggle, containing 1,338 individual data points with seven demographic and behavioral features. Six outliers in the BMI and charges features were removed using the IQR method, while categorical features were encoded with One Hot Encoding. Numerical features were transformed using second-degree Polynomial Features to capture nonlinear relationships, and then the data was split into 80% training and 20% testing. Evaluation used the Mean Squared Error (MSE) and R-squared (R²) metrics. The results indicate Ridge Regression yielded the best performance with an R² value of 0.857 and an MSE of 2.35×10⁷. This model is more stable and effective in handling multicollinearity compared to the other two models. Nevertheless, the average prediction error of approximately USD 4,800 suggests the need for increased accuracy through parameter tuning or data augmentation before being implemented in a real business environment.

Abstract

This research departs from the need to understand speech acts in the realm of written language. The speech acts that become the focus of the research are illocution and their perlocutionary effects. The purpose of the research is to examine the forms of illocution and perlocutionary effects that appear in the novel Namaku Alam by Leila S. Chudori as well as to understand how speech acts are contained in the dialogue of the novel. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with listening or reading and note-taking techniques as the technique of data collection. The data taken are focused on dialogues related to the impact of the 1965 tragedy experienced by the main character. The results of the analysis will be described in detail to illustrate the findings. The pragmatic approach becomes the basis of analysis, with the theory of illocution by Searle and Austin which includes assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declarative illocution as well as the theory of perlocution by Kartika and Widodo, namely perlocution of positive response, negative response and nonresponse as references. The results of the research produce 28 data with details of 15 illocution data divided into five categories, namely 4 assertive data, 4 directive data, 4 expressive data, 1 commissive data, and 1 declarative data, as well as 15 perlocution data consisting of 4 positive response data, 9 negative response data, and 1 nonresponse data. The overall findings show that the novel functions not only as a literary work, but also as a medium that reflects the complexity of communicative interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of participatory methods on the ability to write descriptive text for grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Sukabumi City in 2018/2019 Academic Year. The main subjects in this study were students of class VII G, amounting to 36 students. The purpose of this research is to know the ability to write description text before and after using participatory methods, and determine the effect of participatory methods on the ability to write descriptive text. The research method used in this study is a quantitative method using a one group pretest-posttest design research design. The results of the study were obtained when the pretest average value of students is 40 while the posttest average value of 65.41. This has increased after researchers used participatory methods. The results of the calculation of each test were carried out using the t-test and it was significant to pretest and posttest so that the results obtained were tcount (12.29)> ttable. These results indicate a difference that occurs between the pretest and posttest. It can be concluded that participatory learning methods affect the ability to write description texts for grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Sukabumi. Abstract

The folklore of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes is one of the most well-known legends from East Java, which has been adapted into various other literary forms. One such adaptation is the drama script The Light of Ken Dedes by M. Ahmad Jalidu, which features a more modern narration. This modernization highlights significant differences, particularly regarding the role of Ken Dedes in the two works. While Ken Dedes plays a more passive role (object) in the original folklore, she takes a more active role (subject) in the drama script, especially concerning the events and incidents that befall her. Therefore, the objective of this research is to compare the role of Ken Dedes in the folklore and the drama script to identify similarities and shifts in her characterization. The use of comparative literature and a feminist literary criticism approach was selected as it aligns with the focus on the shifting role of Ken Dedes in facing the patriarchal culture she experiences as the female protagonist in both works. The research methodology employed is descriptive qualitative, as the objects of study are texts, the analysis of which will be described in detail. This study reveals similarities and differences in Ken Dedes’s agency toward the events she faces, such as Ken Dedes as the arbiter of her own marriage, Ken Dedes as an object of power legitimacy, and Ken Dedes as an existential subject.

Abstract

Character development in a novel can basically occur due to environmental factors or social dynamics experienced by the character. The main objective of this study is to explain the development of characters who are affected by their environment and social factors. This research was conducted using qualitative methods, which describe the character development of Lail in the novel Hujan by Tere Liye. The results of this study explain the intrinsic elements of Tere Liye's novel Hujan in the form of plot, characterization, and setting. It also explains three clarifications of literary sociology, namely the social function of the author, literature as a reflection of the times, and the social function of literature. The character development that occurs in a literary work is influenced by the dynamics experienced by the characters. Other roles, such as supporting characters, also contribute to this development. The author also plays a role as the developer of the story.
