Abstract

Nowadays, the trend of buying used clothes or thrifting is popular among the people of Banjarmasin City. This research aims to find out the factors that influence the people of Banjarmasin City in buying used clothes, as well as how symbols (brands) affect the thrifting hunter's lifestyle when buying and using them. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis was done interactively through the process of data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that the thrifting phenomenon affects consumption patterns in fulfilling people's lifestyles, which no longer consume based on utility but rather prioritise the signs or symbols attached to an item. Factors that influence the people of Banjarmasin City in consuming used clothing are: 1) individual factors, namely economy, self-existence, and thrifting as a hobby; 2) social factors, namely family and social status; and, 3) cultural factors, namely the influence of social media and idol artists. Analysed based on the theory of consumption society through the analysis of the social logic of consumption (Baudrillard, 2011), it is concluded that there is happiness, enjoyment and freedom for a thrifting hunter when buying and using second-hand clothes, or being able to fulfil lifestyle desires. Suggestions for the people of Banjarmasin City, especially for users of second-hand clothes, to be more selective in considering a decision in buying second-hand clothes. Buying because of a desire rather than a need that occurs continuously results in waste and inefficiency in buying an product.

Abstract

Women who are slow to marry in Jelapat Village, Barito Kuala Regency, are always in the spotlight and are discussed. This study aims to analyze the community's views on women who are slow to marry, as well as the reasons that make women decide to marry slowly. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research data is based on social facts obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The implementation time of this research was in May - September 2023. The data analysis technique used an interactive model, which consists of data collection, data reduction, and data presentation. The results of the study show that the view of women who are slow to marry is influenced by previous thoughts that assume that if a woman is an adult then she is required to get married quickly. The definition of adulthood according to the community does not refer to a certain age, but is seen from the conditions within the woman, namely being able to live independently, for example being able to wash clothes and dishes, clean the house, get a job, and not depend on her parents. Women who decide to marry late due to various considerations will receive negative labeling from the community because they are considered to violate the values and norms that already exist in society. Women who are slow to marry are usually scorned, ridiculed and labeled as bujang tuha, slow to marry, too choosy and unattractive. This kind of thinking is a preconceived social construction that prevails in society. It is important that the scorn, ridicule and labeling of women who are slow to marry stop because it can be mentally damaging to a woman.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic is the beginning of the rise of the self healing trend among generation Z when all activities must be done from home, so many people need self healing. This study aims to determine the meaning of self healing and how self healing becomes consumptive behavior. The subjects of this research were female students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological research type. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation. The research informants amounted to 18 people, who were obtained by snowball technique. The results showed that self healing became a habit during the Covid-19 pandemic which was finally difficult to abandon and is now a new form of consumptive behavior. Generation Z (female FISIP ULM students) interpret self healing as an obligation, a burden, a way to get recognition, and show themselves on social media. Self healing is used as a sign value that is consumed to show off a lifestyle. The consumption logic of Generation Z (female FISIP ULM students) is no longer on how self healing can provide complete healing, but is replaced by a need that must always be fulfilled. This research concludes that the meaning of self healing has shifted away from its true meaning. It is important for Generation Z students and social media users to wisely filter information and trends that can trigger consumptive behavior. Self healing should be about real self-healing, not just a trend on social media that encourages someone to do it until it becomes consumptive behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze more deeply the collective memory of Bugis weaver community in Pagatan through the form of creating weavers’ works that are not only a residue of the past, but also as a representation of the memories collected for their sustainable cultural identity. This research is based on Bugis community in Pagatan as an illustration of diaspora community that continues to carry out its traditions from their ancestors. This research uses qualitative methods, namely observation, in-depth interviews, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). The purposive technique is carried out to identify informants that have been determined based on the research objectives. This study was analyzed using Maurice Halbwachs’ collective memory theory which said that collective memory embedded in the collective mind of the community forms the story of the past as part of the social identity of the community. This research finds that the systematic sequence of the past is like a collection of threads that are intertwined at a certain time, woven into one and cannot be separated from the present point of view. This research concludes that weavers are also able to manage its collective memory by expressing it through forms of Pagatan Weaving motifs as a strategy to survive its identity.

Abstract

Today's worsening climate change has a significant impact on the economic activities of the community in Jambu Baru Village, Kuripan Sub-district, Barito Kuala Regency. In general, the problems faced are also influenced by the management of economic resources that still depend on traditional methods. Almost all community economic activities have experienced a decline in income as a result of climate change. For example, from beje management, the community still relies heavily on income from the harvest, despite facing harvest uncertainty due to the uncertain season. Adaptation efforts have led to a new source of income, namely fishing tourism by utilizing beje, but is still positioned as additional income. In this case, creative economic opportunities have not been managed to support community adaptation in facing the impacts of climate change. This service program are highlighted problems: (1) The absence of creative and innovative ideas in the development of sustainable fishing tourism in Jambu Baru Village; (2) Women have not played a role in the management and development of fishing tourism in Jambu Baru Village. Problem solutions are designed using a sustainable development approach, which emphasizes the importance of climate change mitigation and adaptation in the context of peatland management. Concretely, the program implemented is strengthening the role of women in realizing sustainable and inclusive tourism. After carrying out village discussions and workshops, women's groups in Jambu Baru Village have creative and innovative ideas for the development of sustainable fishing tourism. The commitment of the women's groups to play an active role as a social base to implement these ideas was also strengthened.

Abstract

Kindingan Village has a population of 719 people with a percentage of 99% earning a living as farmers and planters. The condition of the community that is too dependent on nature in any aspect over time turns into a serious problem. In the past few years, problems have often occurred, one of which is that several times the community has experienced crop failure which has a huge impact on them. This is caused by extreme weather and the season that is always transitional. Therefore, the service team proposed a program inspired by the potential of basket weaving skills by the Kindingan Village community which was then implemented into a program called “Rumah Kreatif”. Where we as a team of servants conducted the formation of basket production groups and socialization of online marketing with the community. The program implementation applied a participatory approach. In an effort to build community participation, the service team applies the live-in method, which is living in the village during the implementation of the service and actively involved in community activities outside of the service program. The duration of the program implementation is 58 days, starting from July 18, 2024 to September 13, 2024. The results achieved from the implementation of this service program are the creation of new jobs outside the agricultural sector, so that it is expected to increase income. Abstract

Limited institutional capacity is the main obstacle for urban farming groups in Sungai Andai Village, North Banjarmasin. Unorganized organizational structures and unclear division of roles lead to weak coordination and decision-making. The purpose of this service activity is to strengthen the institutional capacity and management of the group through the arrangement of organizational structures, division of roles, and strengthening the network of external partnerships. The program was carried out for six months with participatory methods in the form of group discussions, focus group discussions (FGDs), workshops, training, and mentoring. The activity partner is the Puma III Wine Village Group which consists of 14 members. Evaluations are carried out periodically at the end of each month using observations, interviews, and online questionnaires. The results showed an increase in member participation from 70% to 92%, an increase in material understanding from 65% to 91%, and an increase in institutional capacity from 60% to 90%. In addition, the group succeeded in compiling a functional organizational structure, an annual work plan, and guidelines for biodiversity-based urban farming businesses.
