Abstract

Children who should be focusing on their education often neglect their obligations by skipping school to play and beg around Kubah Basirih. This research aims to explore the self-concept of child beggars in the Religious Tourism of Kubah Basirih, Banjarmasin, using phenomenological approach and George Herbert Mead's symbolic interactionism theory. This qualitative study involves data collection through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation from seven child beggar informants. The research process includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that driving factors for children begging include personal desire for money, peer influence, and parental requests. Begging activities help them develop communication skills, observational skills, and understanding of verbal and non-verbal symbols. Social interactions with visitors shape their self-perception, often at the expense of formal education. The study also reveals that child beggars at Kubah Basirih prioritize playing and socializing with peers over simply earning money from begging. They enjoy companionship and support from peers, fulfilling their desire as children to experience happiness. Consequently, this often leads them to neglect formal education, which should be their primary focus. These findings underscore the importance of understanding how self-concept forms not only from subjective experiences but also through self-reflection and interaction with the environment.

Abstract

Tabing Rimbah Village is located in Mandastana Sub-district, Barito Kuala Regency. This village has an advantage in agriculture, especially rice and citrus commodities. Therefore, the majority of the Tabing Rimbah community are farmers. However, since the floods that inundated the agricultural land, the Tabing Rimbah community can no longer grow oranges. One of the factors that exacerbated the impact of the flood disaster that occurred was the problem of waste. So that the waste problem became the concern of the service team. Basically, the waste problem is caused by the lack of garbage bins, which leads to bad actions by the community by littering. The solution that is encouraged to overcome the waste problem is the provision of garbage bins at 10 points in Tabing Rimbah Village that are easily accessible to the community. In addition to the provision of waste basket facilities, social aspects are also a concern in this service program. The activities carried out in this service program include socialization of waste utilization counseling, making trash bins and signs, and cleaning and renovating village parks. The implementation of activities was carried out from July 16 to August 21, 2023. The activities designed can be carried out well by involving the community to participate and fully participate in the various activities carried out. This program is directly able to foster community awareness of the environment, as well as increase community capacity in the utilization of used waste. Thus the achievements of this program are able to contribute to solving the problems faced by Tabing Rimbah Village, and the benefits can be felt by various levels of the Tabing Rimbah Village community.

Abstract

The village of Ajung in Balangan Regency has great potential for nature and cultural tourism, especially on Mount Hauk, which is revered by the Dayak Pitap community. However, this potential has not been optimally managed due to frequent cultural clashes between tourists and the local community. The main problem is the lack of comprehensive written information about customs and restrictions, resulting in many tourists unintentionally violating sacred norms. This has the potential to damage the environment and cultural values that have been preserved for generations. The proposed solution is to compile a Mount Hauk Tourist Pocket Book as an official guide for tourists. This community service activity was carried out for 40 days, from July 21 to August 29, 2025, in Ajung Village. The implementation method used a participatory approach through live-in, participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to ensure the active involvement of the community in each stage. The result of this activity was the creation of the Gunung Hauk Tourism Pocket Book in print and digital form, which contains an area profile, tourism rules, customary prohibitions, and practical climbing information. This output contributes to increasing tourist understanding, strengthening sustainable tourism management, and minimizing the potential for cultural conflict. Overall, this community service successfully created an ethical tourism guide model based on local wisdom that can serve as an example for the management of similar destinations.

Abstract

Mamigang Village in Halong District, Balangan Regency, South Kalimantan, has natural resources in the form of rivers, mountains, and waterfalls. Mamigang Village utilizes these natural resources as tourist attractions. However, the tourism sector has not been optimally managed, as it faces obstacles in infrastructure development, accessibility, and facilities. Additionally, other potential areas, such as culture, have not been utilized as part of tourism. The factors hindering tourism development include the abundance of tourist attractions and the confusion among tourism managers in developing tourism. Therefore, the community service team designed and implemented the program “Creation of a Master Plan Book for Mapping Potential and Developing Tourism Strategies in Mamigang Village.” This community service program uses the live-in method in the village for 56 days, which runs from July 17, 2025, to September 10, 2025. This program consists of several activities, namely: 1) Program socialization and perception alignment; 2) Creation of a master plan book design; 3) Field surveys; 4) Field data analysis; 5) Compilation of a master plan book for mapping potential and tourism development strategies; and 6) Discussion of SWOT results and dissemination of results. The results achieved from this community service program are the compilation of a master plan book mapping the potential and strategies for tourism development. The book contains tourism development strategies analyzed based on the potential, obstacles, challenges, and opportunities of existing tourist attractions. Furthermore, it is hoped that this program will have a long-term impact through the optimal development of tourism, which can improve the local community's economy. Furthermore, increasing awareness of the natural and cultural wealth in Mamigang Village can become a local-based potential.

Abstract

Laborer families at the Super Sohun Factory in Banjarmasin City face severe economic challenges due to their low weekly income, which ranges only between Rp300,000 and Rp400,000. This amount is significantly below the city’s minimum wage and is insufficient to meet the rising cost of living. This study aims to identify the resilience strategies adopted by laborer families to fulfill their basic needs and examine how these strategies contribute to the continuity of essential family functions despite adversity. A qualitative research design was used with a phenomenological approach. The study was conducted in the South District, Banjarmasin City. Data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation. The data analysis used Miles and Huberman’s interactive model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that the families build resilience through the effective use of five livelihood assets: social, human, financial, natural, and physical capital. They endure hardship by working hard, practicing frugality, leveraging social support, and embedding values of simplicity and cooperation. These strategies enable them to maintain crucial family roles such as child-rearing, education, and household harmony. Theoretically, this study contributes to the discourse on urban family sociology and resilience in impoverished settings. Practically, it offers insights for local government policy in designing social protection programs that genuinely support the resilience of urban working-class families.

Abstract

The declining interest in becoming farmers, especially among the younger generation or successors, poses a challenge in how to achieve farmer regeneration for future food security. This research aims to understand and analyse in depth using the community empowerment theory, namely ACTORS (Authority, Confidence and Competence, Trust, Opportunities, Responsibilities, Support) regarding the forms of training, as well as the outcomes produced both in terms of capacity and the social-humanistic aspect of the Biji Kopi Borneo alternative agricultural school in Banjarbaru City. This research uses a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological research type. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. The research results using the ACTORS framework prove that the Borneo Coffee Bean training comprehensively with the upstream to downstream concept meets every input of the ACTORS framework. Thus, it can effectively and efficiently enhance the capacity, skills, self-confidence, recognition, and independence of each participant. Providing moral and material support can change the negative stigma associated with the farming profession in the participants. Practicing directly the processing techniques from the planting process to the post-harvest process, to enhance innovation and creativity. Based on the ACTORS analysis results of the training, it creates independent and adaptive young farmers. They contribute to the agricultural sector towards the development of their hometown, community service, and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among the youth. This research provides a reference for future studies, particularly highlighting the topic of alternative agricultural schools as a new social movement based on empowerment. Further research is recommended to highlight empowerment programs in realising farmer regeneration

Abstract

In the K-Pop dance cover community in Banjarmasin City, some male crossdressers present performances imitating original K-Pop groups, including showcasing costumes and expressions that match the gender of the idols they imitate. The aim of this research is to highlight how their identities are formed and lived, both on stage and in everyday life. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis uses methods that include Data Collection, Data Reduction, Data Presentation, and Conclusion. The results of the study indicate that being a crossdresser is not merely a role played for performance needs, but has become a real part of the identity lived in everyday life. The crossdressers show involvement in their way of dressing, speaking, and social interactions outside of performance contexts. The researcher reveals that the gender expressions displayed by crossdressers are the result of a process of repetitive actions that gradually shape identity, demonstrating that gender performance does not only occur within a Western discursive context but can also root and transform within local community spaces rich in collective values, religion, and social ethics. Academically, this study contributes to the development of gender studies, particularly within the context of non-urban performing arts communities that are still rarely researched. Theoretically, this research enriches Butler's theory of performativity by showing how gender performance can grow and transform within local communities.

Abstract

The limited availability of natural resources in Madura has encouraged its people to migrate and engage in trading activities in major cities such as Banjarmasin in order to sustain their livelihoods. This study aims to describe how Madurese traders at Sentra Antasari Market manage social capital to strengthen their existence in the host society. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Madurese traders possess deeply internalized cultural strengths in their everyday lives, such as values of hard work, frugality, and a strong migrant ethos, which shape a solid social identity and function as adaptive strategies in facing urban economic challenges. Although the social structure formed is informal, it operates effectively through kinship ties and shared regional backgrounds, while their social capital is manifested in three main aspects: trust among community members, collective norms that maintain discipline and solidarity, and active social networks sustained through routine activities such as rotating savings groups and social gatherings. These findings highlight that local culture does not hinder modernization but instead serves as a crucial force in building economic resilience and social harmony in urban spaces, contributing to the development of economic sociology and market ethnography literature and offering practical insights into how social capital strengthens the economic stability of migrant ethnic groups; future research is encouraged to explore the role of social capital in interethnic relations within multicultural market settings.
