Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the biggest health problems in the world because every year there is an increase in cases. In addition to the increasing number, DM is also known to cause many complications which are divided into two, namely acute complications and chronic complications. The emergence of complications and leading to death in DM patients is due to the low self-efficacy and self-care behavior of DM patients themselves. Self-efficacy is an important factor that is defined as a patient's confidence in maintaining and improving his medical condition. Seeing the importance of self-efficacy in the care of DM patients, increasing patient self-efficacy is needed, namely through the Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) program. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the WhatsApp-based DSME application on the self-efficacy of Type 2 DM patients. This type of research is a Quasy Experiment and the sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling (Non-Probability sampling). The research design used was Pre-Experiment With Only one Group Pretest - Postest Design. The number of samples was 22 DM type 2 patients. Demographic data collection through questionnaires distributed via google form. The statistical test used was the Paired t test. The results of statistical tests found that there was an effect of WhatsApp-based DSME on the self-efficacy of Type 2 DM patients, with a p value of 0.000 (p <0.05). This shows that there is an effect of WhatsApp-based DSME on the self-efficacy of Type 2 DM patients at the Hamparan Perak Community Health Center.

Abstract

Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive bacterium that causes acne. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of purple passion fruit peel (Passiflora edulis Sims) against Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. The method used to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of passion fruit peel was a paper disc (Kirby-Bauer test). Based on the results of phytochemical screening, the purple passion fruit peel simplicia powder contains flavonoid compounds, saponins, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids that function as antimicrobials. Based on the antibacterial activity test, the purple passion fruit peel ethanol extract at concentrations of 5, 10, 15, and 20% effectively inhibited the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. This can be proven from the results of the diameter of the inhibition zone that there was an increase in antibacterial effectiveness along with the increase in the concentration of purple passion fruit peel extract in inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, namely at a concentration of 5%, the average diameter of the inhibition zone was 14.9 mm, then at a concentration of 10% the average diameter of the inhibition zone is 15.3 mm, then at a concentration of 15% the average diameter of the inhibition zone is 17.2 mm, while at a maximum concentration of 20% the average diameter of the inhibition zone is 20.1 mm. The research results conclude that the purple passion fruit rind ethanol extract effectively inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria at a concentration of 20% with an inhibition zone diameter of 20.1 mm.

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi- experimental study was to determine the effect of exercise consultation program based on Transtheoretical Model (TTM) approach on exercise behavioral change, blood glucose and body mass index (BMI)  in patients of T2DM with overweight. The two comparison groups, quasi-experimental study were purposively designed for pre-test/post-test procedures; 61 patients of T2DM allocated into the experimental (31 patients) and the control (30 patients) groups. While the experimental group received the exercise consultation for 12 weeks, the control group received routine care. Comparative assessments on differences in exercise behavioral changes, blood glucose and BMI were examined both within and between groups using Chi-Square test and t-test. After receiving exercise consultation program, 54.8 % of participants of the experimental group had progressed to the action stage of change of TTM, while the majority of the participants in the control group (43.3%) remained in the same stages of TTM, and only 3.3 % of the participants had progressed to the maintenance stage. This proportion of exercise behavior change between the groups was significantly statistical different (Chi-Square = 000, p <0.05). Blood glucose significantly decreased in the experimental group (p < .05), but there was no significant difference in the control group. No significant difference of mean scores of BMI of participants between the experimental group and the control group post-intervention of exercise consultation program (p > .05). In conclusion, the exercise consultation program could promote the exercise behaviors. Abstract

Spent edible oil is the result of repeated frying that is mostly done in the fast food industry or in household activities and generally this used cooking oil is disposed of as waste that pollutes the waters in the environment. Spent edible oil is a good ingredient for soap making because its raw material is relatively cheaper than most oils. In a simple laboratory study conducted by students of SMA Harapan III Deli Serdang, soap was made from used cooking oil using alkaline NaOH. The saponification process was carried out using used edible oil soap 0.3 parts by mass ratio of NaOH at a concentration of 30% and 1 part of used edible oil bleached with activated charcoal. The analysis of edible oil soap that has been made by determinate the value of free alkali with acid-base titration method and foam stability test. The results obtained from the determination of the foam test provide foam stability of 83.3% and free alkali content of 0.211%. This soap provides a fairly stable foam stability, but it still feels hot in the hands due to the alkaline NaOH that is used not completely soaped in the washing process. The use of edible oil into soap by students can increase knowledge and can be applied to overcome environmental pollution due to the disposal of edible oil into the environment.
