Abstract

Blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is the dominant catch in Betahwalang, Demak, and the most important export fish commodity, particularly to USA. The high demand for this crab has been promoting an excessive fishing effort, causing a decrease in the crab's natural stock. This study aims to investigate the biological condition of P. pelagicus on the northern coast of Central Java and assess the crab stock exploitation status in this study area. Carapace width, body weight, Gonad Maturity Stages (GMS), and sex of crab samples were collected from the fishers and collectors landing sites or meeting points. This study employs a simple random sampling technique with no replacement. This study revealed that the maximum carapace width of female crabs was 56-164 mm, and the estimated carapace width at first maturity (Lm) was 98.2 mm. The relationships between carapace width and body weight between male and female crabs indicated positive and negative allometric growth patterns. During this assessment, the P. pelagicus stock indicated an 'over-exploited’ status, with an LB-SPR parameter of 19 percent and an exploitation rate (E) of 0.66. Management measures such as minimum legal size, reduced effort, and open-close areas and seasons should be implemented to achieve sustainable use of the crab fishery. Keywords:Blue swimming crabFishing gearDemak watersCarapace lengthSpawning potential ratio

Abstract

Sharks is the dominant bycatch of purse seine and bottom longline vessels that landed in Kutaraja ocean fishing port, particularly pelagic thresher shark species (Alopias pelagicus). The management of shark fisheries  in Aceh water is not well implemented.  According to the IUCN red list, the pelagic thresher shark has been classified as an endangered species. The capture and trade of pelagic thresher sharks are regulated by CITES (Appendix II). So that Indonesia has to comply with the procedures of CITES due to it has been adopted through the Decree of Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia Number 61/PERMEN-KP/2018. However, the exploitation and trading of the A. pelagicus continues and is not properly managed. It will threaten the extinction of the pelagic thresher shark population and in terms of a negative image of fisheries management in Indonesia, in particular.  Thus, integrated management such as the ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) is needed to solve this problem. This study aims to evaluate the fisheries management status of the pelagic thresher shark based on EAFM indicator of fish resources domain, focusing in the Kutaraja ocean fishing port. This research was conducted by field measurement and interviews with key stakeholders. Data were analyzed using a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) approach through development of a composite index. The results showed that the trend of CPUE  tends to fluctuate in the last 5 years. The total length of the sharks was relatively constant. The proportion of juvenile pelagic thresher sharks was 16% male, and 28% (female), and the shark was bycatch (1%) of the purse seine fishery, the fishing ground was getting further away and seemed to go close to the shark habitat.  Based on this assessment, one could conclude that shark's fishery resources were in 'good' category, however, some indicators need to improve through better fisheries management actions. Keywords: EAFM; Alopias pelagicus; pelagic thresher shark; Kutaraja ocean fishing port

Abstract

Abstract

Graphical Abstract   Highlight Research             This research highlight presents a focused summary of the key findings from our study in the field of fisheries science, specifically addressing the biological parameters and stock status of economically important fish species. There is highlighted research presented in this study, namely: Crimson snapper in PPN Brondong is captured using four types of fishing gear: cantrang, jaring tarik berkantong, handline, and bottom longline. The growth pattern of the crimson snapper is negative allometric. The Gonad Maturity Level (GML) of the catch was predominantly composed of crimson snapper at GML I and GML II. The asymptotic length (L∞) of crimson snapper was 47.68 cm, with K = 0.4 per year, total mortality (Z) = 2.44 per year, natural mortality (M) = 0.98 per year, capture mortality (F) of 1.55 per year, and exploitation rate (E) = 0.60 The estimated value of the crimson snapper SPR was 22% suggesting that the crimson snapper stock is ‘fully exploited’.     Abstract The utilization status of crimson snapper stock in the Northern Java Sea (FMA 712) has reached optimum, tending to be over-exploited. This study aims to evaluate the stock status of crimson snapper (Lutjanus erythropterus) in FMA 712, especially in the northern waters of East Java. This research utilized catch data from the Brondong fishing port. The stratified random sampling method was utilized to collect samples at the research site. The findings indicate that the growth pattern of L. erythropterus exhibits a tendency towards negative allometry, with fishing mortality (F = 1.55) exceeding natural mortality (M = 0.89). The exploitation rate has reached a status of ‘fully exploited’ (E = 0.6). The Gonad Maturity Level (GML) of the catch is predominantly composed of GML I and GML II, suggesting that the majority of the captured fish have not yet spawned.  It relates to the predominance of cantrang and jaring tarik berkantong, which capture fish of juvenile size. Thus, the Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) parameter indicates it is ‘fully exploited’ (SPR = 0.22), i.e., the utilization rate has exceeded the limit of natural capacity for recruitment. This SPR value confirms: the utilization rate parameter (E), the fact that catch sizes tend to get smaller, and the results of previous studies in FMA 712. It is imperative to regulate the fishing efforts targeting the crimson snapper, as well as the deployment of cantrang and jaring tarik berkantong, which pose potential threats to the sustainability of this fishery.

Abstract

Activities conducted at the Kejawanan Nusantara Fishing Port include landing of fish including loading and unloading of catches that have the highest potential for work accidents. Work accidents can result in losses such as delays in loading and unloading activities. Potential hazards can arise due to the lack of awareness of the parties involved in the loading and unloading operation process, including the authorities in handling the prevention and control of work accidents that occur. This study aims to describe loading and unloading activities, identify potential hazards, and develop recommendations and risk mitigation. The research was conducted in October-November 2024 at Kejawanan VAT, Cirebon. The analysis used was descriptive with the Hierarchy Task Analysis (HTA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) methods. The results of the study identified six main stages namely pre-unloading, unloading activities, post-unloading, pre-loading, loading activities, and post-loading which included 62 potential hazards, categorized as 25% non-hazardous, 33% mild, 17% medium, 19% severe, and 6% potentially fatal. Prevention of work accidents can be done through increasing awareness of the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), certification of transportation drivers to prevent fatal accidents, and strict supervision by port managers. This effort is expected to improve work safety in every loading and unloading activity at Kejawanan PPN. Key words: HTA, JSA, loading and unloading, PPN Kejawanan, work safety
