Abstract

Anime as an instrument of soft power has been a medium of cultural diplomacy by Japan. Through the years, anime continues to improve its quality and quantity, making it a form of Japanese popular culture that has received attention and interest from people in various countries. This study aims to examine the representation of the anime films Kimi No Nawa and Tenki No Ko as instruments of soft power in Japanese cultural diplomacy. Makoto Shinkai's two masterpieces have attracted attention and popularity outside of Japan. In the process of analysis, the authors use the concept of soft power, cultural politics and cultural diplomacy as well as qualitative research methods. From the research conducted, the authors found that Japan maintains its image and influence and shows openness to international audiences. This can be seen from the representation of Japanese cultural values and foreign culture in the dynamics of urban and rural life shown in the anime. These two anime have positively impacted Japan's cultural diplomacy given the high viewership numbers, records and revenue from film screenings worldwide like in People’s Republic of China, South Korea, United Kingdom and Singapore. This film was also successful in presenting a new tourist attraction for foreign fans because several fictional locations in the film were inspired by real places or locations in Japan. The government had facilitated package tour for tourists to travel several real places in the anime.

Abstract

Abstract

The disability rights movement is exercised by movement actors who are able to transform their experiences of suffering into power to bring about changes toward the fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities. This research discusses the relationship between the reconstruction of past experiences of grievances due to stigma and discrimination, collective identity, and the capacity to be involved in the disability rights movement. By taking a location in Bali, this research uses a qualitative-phenomenology methodology to reveal the meaning of the experiences of the subjects who are disability rights movement activists, in the process of involving themselves in social movements. This article finds that the social movement actors are able to reconstruct their suffering into the capacity to make changes. Their personal identity meets their collective identity as actors in the disability rights movement through interaction with the community which provides space for the emergence of new awareness about rights and advocacy strategies.  The UNCRPD ratification, socialized by civil society organizations, opened up opportunities for strengthening interactions and networks between disability rights activists at the national and local levels. This network has strengthened the confidence of activists in Bali to take collective action. The ratification of the UNCRPD is also a momentum for mobilizing movement resources to change the old frame of charity towards a new frame of the fulfilment of rights. Changing the framework was carried out by advocating Regional Regulations in Bali which are in line with the spirit of the UNCRPD. Besides that, activists through their daily activities, show the public that persons with disabilities can be independent and actualize their potential if they get the chance.

Abstract

The flow of globalization is one form of contemporary development. Globalization provides many benefits for human life globally. One perceived benefit of globalization is the ease of information and technology that is widely spread on the global stage. Sophisticated technology is in the spotlight in connecting the international community easily without restrictions. Traveling from one country to another has become a trend in the current era. Foreign tourists take advantage of easy access to information and technology when visiting various parts of the country. However, with the benefits of globalization, it is not uncommon to find violations committed by international tourists when visiting a country. One of them occurred in Indonesia, especially in Bali, where Non-Procedural Workers (Illegal Workers) were found to be abusing residence permits in 2022-2023. This research aims to analyze the development of globalization with the emergence of non-traditional threats through policies formed to maintain a country's national security using descriptive qualitative methods. In analyzing the case, the author uses international security theory. In the case of violations committed by foreigners, they threaten the stability of a country's national security, which can lead to non-traditional threats to international security. In handling violations, actors within the country provide strict sanctions given by a country's immigration authorities in the form of deportation. The role of immigration in carrying out its duties in monitoring the inflow and outflow of foreigners cannot be separated from the role of the actors involved, such as the implementation of TIMPORA, the police, and the role of the community.

Abstract

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) ratified by Indonesia in 2011, presents the perspective of the fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities. The process of internalizing disability rights norms at the domestic level does not occur linearly, but through the struggles of  the disability rights activists in their respective regions. Taking place in Bali, this study investigates the motivations and causes of the involvement of disability rights actors in disseminating disability rights norms. By using a transnationalism theory and phenomenological methods, this study finds that the spread of international norms on disability rights in Bali occurred as a social movement that had grown before the ratification of the CRPD. There is an open interaction between local, national and international actors. The self-struggle against discrimination and the interaction of movement actors in Bali with international volunteers who have a cosmopolitan consciousness, gave birth to the movement agency. CRPD provides an opportunity and direction for movement actors to advocate local regulations for the fulfillment of disability rights. In their social environment, they build awareness to the persons with disabilities and their families, as well as showed the wider community that persons with disabilities have the competence to be independent.
