Abstract

For decades, the Indonesian government has tried to catch up with the development of English language teaching worldwide. This paper discusses the implementation of the communicative approach (CA) and why it is culturally incompatible in Indonesia. Having done library research, the writers first discuss the status of English language teaching in Indonesia and the development of communicative language teaching (CLT) in the world. The discussion then shifts to cultural issues hindering the implementation of CLT in Indonesia. Here, instead of suggesting major changes, the writers recommend that CLT be culturally adjusted, and English teachers who play an important role in the classroom must be able to tinker with their methods to make them appropriate to the local cultural norms. There is a pressing need to redefine the current teacher-student relationship to keep up with the prevailing cultural norms. The teachers should incorporate more student-centered activities in the classroom.

Abstract

This study is intended to create simple mobile website-based learning media to facilitate the students to learn speaking skills in English. The study used Borg and Gall’s development model with six steps of modified procedures, including research and information collection, planning, developing, design validation, design revision, and implementation. The researchers carried out a product feasibility test through the product validation and product trials on the field research. The product validation was realised by submitting a questionnaire to the media expert and learning material experts, while the product trials were conducted by distributing the user feedback questionnaire to the students. The results showed that the feasibility testing score by the media expert was 88% and the product validation score by the material experts was 87%, meaning that the mobile website-based learning media was feasible to use. Furthermore, based on the user feedback questionnaire results, the cumulative percentage was 87,50% which supports the product validity. Thus, it can be said that the mobile website-based learning media is feasible and valid to use for learning speaking in English.

Abstract

The present study is intended to investigate the contrasting phonological features of Singlish with the specific aim of finding out how the pronunciation of vowels in Singlish differs from Standard English and the potential factors influencing the Singlish vowel pronunciation. Five YouTube videos containing 19 targeted words uttered by three Singlish speakers became the data source. The auditory analysis method was used to find distinctive vowels between Singlish and Standard English. The descriptive qualitative method was then used to determine the factors influencing the Singlish phonological differences. The results show that Singlish speakers tended to change the /ə/ to /ɜː/, not be able to distinguish the /ə/ and /e/ and have no rules in long and short vowel systems. All these differences are likely a result of contact language situations in Singapore that has been in place for years.
