Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how well eleventh-grade students at SMK Telkom 2 Medan can master English vocabulary with the use of flashcards. The kids' limited vocabulary, especially in vocational schools where English instruction is frequently limited by time and less engaging techniques, is what spurred the research. Two groups participated in a quantitative study utilizing a quasi-experimental design: the experimental group was taught vocabulary using flashcards, while the control group was instructed using traditional techniques. Multiple-choice vocabulary questions were used in pre-tests and post-tests to gauge students' development. The results showed that whereas the control group's average score only increased from 49.6 to 62.0, the experimental group's improved significantly from 51.6 to 79.2. The flashcard strategy greatly improved students' vocabulary acquisition, according to statistical studies, including paired sample and independent sample t-tests (t-value = 7.24; p < 0.001). Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire showed that the majority of students thought flashcards helped them comprehend word meanings, memorize vocabulary more rapidly, and enjoy studying. To sum up, using flashcards to teach English vocabulary turned out to be a successful and entertaining visual aid. This strategy is appropriate for vocational school settings because it not only improved retention but also raised students' motivation and active participation.

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties experienced by EFL students in writing essays for prose analysis, along with the strategies they use to overcome these challenges. This research used qualitative research with a case study design. The participants of the study were 14 students of the English Language and Literature department from one of the state universities in Malang, East Java. The data collection took two months. The instruments used were interviews, questionaires, observation, and documentation. The result shows that students face major challenges in essay writing, particularly in content and organization, such as making good thesis statements and conclusions, and moderate difficulties with grammar. However, they demonstrated sufficient vocabulary and mechanical skills. To address these issues, students reported employing different types of strategies. The most common were mind mapping, continuous practice, and peer discussions. Moderately used strategies included seeking feedback, using audiovisual resources, and consulting dictionaries. The least used were translating, watching YouTube videos, and using AI tools or application. These strategies were applied throughout the writing process—pre-writing, whilst writing, and post-writing—and students found them effective in improving their prose analysis essays.

Abstract

This study is intended to create simple mobile website-based learning media to facilitate the students to learn speaking skills in English. The study used Borg and Gall’s development model with six steps of modified procedures, including research and information collection, planning, developing, design validation, design revision, and implementation. The researchers carried out a product feasibility test through the product validation and product trials on the field research. The product validation was realised by submitting a questionnaire to the media expert and learning material experts, while the product trials were conducted by distributing the user feedback questionnaire to the students. The results showed that the feasibility testing score by the media expert was 88% and the product validation score by the material experts was 87%, meaning that the mobile website-based learning media was feasible to use. Furthermore, based on the user feedback questionnaire results, the cumulative percentage was 87,50% which supports the product validity. Thus, it can be said that the mobile website-based learning media is feasible and valid to use for learning speaking in English.
