Abstract

Type of nomophobia emerges from the prevalence of excessive use of smartphones. The Nomophobia Instrument (NMP-Q) has been adapted across several countries and languages. Still, there have been few studies that have adapted and tested the psychometric properties of the NMP-Q. Thus, this study aimed to linguistically and culturally adapt and validate the Indonesian version of NMP-Q (NMPQ-10). The adaptation process involved experts in language and psychology. The NMPQ-10 in the Indonesian version was validated by involving 276 college students from public universities in Indonesia aged 17 to 24 years old. The results revealed that empirical data supported the overall measurement model of NMPQ-10. The internal structure of NMPQ-10 in the Indonesian version was similar to that of the original version. The Indonesian version of NMPQ-10 also had high psychometric properties, as indicated by the composite reliability (CR) of 0.932 and a Cronbach Alpha of 0.97. Both were classified as high and evident in internal structure (satisfactory construct validity and convergent validity). This study has important implications for counseling practice, as counselors can use the NMPQ-10 to identify individuals experiencing high levels of nomophobia and guide interventions and treatment plans accordingly. In conclusion, the Indonesian version of NMPQ-10 can be utilized to assess nomophobia among college students. Further studies are needed to include a larger sample to improve the validation of NMPQ-10.

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of emotion regulation and social support towards suicidal ideation on college students. This research was based on preliminary data, which showed suicidal ideation that arose among college students. The subject of this study was 210 students of the State University of Malang. This study used descriptive-correlational research. The instrument used in this study was adapted from several measuring devices. There is Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) developed by Gross, Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL) designed by Hoberman & Cohen, and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) developed by PAR, Inc (Psychological Assessment Resource), which refers to the scale that was developed by Reynolds. The results show that (1) there is an effect of emotion regulation towards suicidal ideation with t-count value < 0.05 or by 0.000 (2) there is an effect of social support towards suicidal ideation with t-count value < 0.05 or by 0.008 (3) there is an effect of regulation emotion and social support towards suicidal ideation with f-count value < 0.05 or by 0.000, and 39.62% effective contribution. Based on these results, it can conclude that social support and emotional regulation influence the emergence of suicidal ideation in students.

Abstract

The use of media affects how college students interact with lecturers, including the tendency of students to be more active in the learning process. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a relationship between the type of media and the online disinhibition effect in the online lecture process. Data were obtained from 616 respondents who filled out online questionnaires and used Kendall’s tau analysis to test the research questions. The results of the analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between the type of media and the level of online disinhibition effect (rτ equals .02, p equals .56). This is because the closeness of the interaction in the online class that occurs is able to match the interaction in the offline class and everyone in the class already knows each other, so that whatever media used is not related to the level of online disinhibition effect.

Abstract

Adaptation theory explains that mothers’ subjective well-being (SWB) is determined by their abilities to adapt to challenging life events using coping mechanisms. The literature highlights three latent coping mechanism factors: emotional regulation, mindfulness, and gratitude. This study aims to build a model of mothers’ SWB based on these factors. The sample comprised 302 young mothers (20-25 years old) selected using convenience sampling. Data were solicited from Likert scales that measured emotion regulation, mindfulness, gratitude, and SWB and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that the SWB model had adequate goodness of fit, with a chi-square of 153.553 (p < .05), GFI of .934, AGFI of .899, CFI of .929, TLI of .906, and RMSEA of .076. The model shows that emotion regulation and mindfulness, mediated by gratitude, influenced SWB, with gratitude as a strong predictor of SWB. As an implication in counseling, gratitude interventions should be applied in practice.

Abstract

College students face various challenges, strains and failures, which could prevent them from achieving a higher state of flourishing. The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was to describe students’ self-compassion and flourishing, whereas the second was to examine the correlation between self-compassion and flourishing among a sample of students from the State University of Malang. The sample consisted of 160 students from eight faculties who were selected through cluster sampling. Self-compassion and flourishing were both self-developed by the authors. The main finding demonstrated that in line with the hypothesis, high levels of self-compassion are associated with high levels of flourishing.
