Abstract

Contrastive analysis in this article is applied on translation involving three different languages, i.e. Indonesian and Javanese (Eastern languages) and English (Western language). Analysis on the data results in the fact that Western has more complete realization of experienced entity, as proved in the complete pronoun for all (first, second, third and also human or non-human). The Eastern doesn’t realize the perceived existence in a complete pronoun. Bahasa is lack of third person for non-human, and Javanese has no practical third person either for human or non-human, as found in the translation data. Eastern is concerned more on the realization of different social and interpersonal relation between speaker, interlocutor and the third person mentioned in the interaction. Thus, Eastern is rich with variation in addressing another among of which is formulated in the H and S for “I”, “you” and “he”.

Abstract

Young female writers shocked the literary field of Indonesia by publishing their works in their way: light, unburdened, and fresh. Their language choice is easily understandable: the novels were written in colloquial style. The books were sold well. It did refresh our literary world. The teenagers, at least, have more alternatives to read something composed by their peers. Through their pens, our teens share their views on reality in their very style.                        One of outstanding concepts evoked in their writing is the formulation of “ beauty”. This paper took four novels, My Friends-My Dream, Ramalan Fudus Ororpus, Kana di Negeri Kiwi, dan Summer Triangle, to discover the teen’s perspective concerning beauty. The concept is internalized in their mind through the discourses developed in their social background and through the media. They select those discourses, and take one they believe in it.                    They analysis shows that their concept of beauty is not so different from the general one or patriarchal beauty. However, they insist that being beauty does not necessarily mean to be happy, as it was obviously declared in Kana di Negeri Kiwi. The beauty is : tall, white, black and straight hair, and well-shaped  body. This is just a result of the dominance of patriarchy, standing in the same position of capitalism to whom the main stream media are belonged. The media holder is the only one dictating what’s to be “ beauty.”

Abstract

Translating cultural pieces is always challenging since it usually involves a task of presenting something unknown to the target readers. This case is seen in the translation of Ronggeng Dhukuh Paruk novel which has been translated in many languages, one of them is English. It is full of Javanese cultural pieces but it was written in Bahasa Indonesia. Later, it was translated (or rewrite) into Javanese—like coming back to its own language habitat. The objective of the paper is to identify the strategies applied to translate the cultural meaning. The data sources are the three-language versions of the novel, in Indonesia, Javanese and English. The analysis on the data revealed that there are many various cultural meanings in the text: ecological facts, social and cultural concept, the cultural products in things, religion, and linguistic features of the culture. The strategies used to translate the cultural meaning are descriptive (badhongan – leave garland), calque (bukak klambu), borrowing (dadap, seling, kathik), and borrowing with description (kamitua-respected leader). The procedure taken in translating cultural pieces considers some factor: the importance of the meaning for the narration, its foreign level, the importance of its exotics sense in the literary work, and the interest to present local nuances to the target readers.

Abstract

This article is aimed to give contributions to studies and increase knowledge the liguistics of Indonesian music scene. This study examines the meaning of the interpersonal approach of intersemiotic Complementarity (Royce, 2001) which believes that both images and text in one text are a unity and convey a complementary meaning. Intersemiotic Complementarity combines two frameworks between SFL by Halliday (1994) and Multimodal Discourse by Kress and Leeuwen (1996). Based on the analysis, interpersonal meaning which contained in verbal mood of Omnipotence Paradox – Eternal Desolator consists of declarative and interrogative mood. Declarative mood dominates the lyrics that provides spiritual statements regarding the existence of God. The speaker also gives information to listeners that the lyrics are in essence not solely created by the speker but also come from the demons whispered who tries to ruined humans believe in their god. Through the interrogative modes, demons tries to ask polarizing questions that ask the author's divinity so that he gets trapped in the demon's perception. Meanwhile, the visual meaning of his digital artwork is to try to represent the lyrics into a low modality image that was made unclear by combining various references to divine images that are spread across social phenomenon.

Abstract

The primary goals of this research are to determine the language patterns of the signs, characterize the employment of different languages in these patterns, and explain the language situation reflected by the LL signals in the two locations. It applied a mixed method (Cresswell: 2018). The subject of this research includes shop signs, slogans, and also some of the advertising signs displayed in the sites. The signs were then seen from the number of languages displayed and their source. For the analysis, it adopted the view of Scollon and Scollon and Scollon-Wong (2003). Based on the results of the analysis, the signs can be classified as monolingual, bilingual, or multilingual. The languages displayed there are Indonesian, Javanese, English, Japanese, Arabic. The first three languages are the dominant in any kind of signs collected from these sites. The presence of more than a language in sign has proved that the languages displayed tend to be complement to each other as they bear different information (and sometimes) functions. English is taken for its commerciality and prestige, Indonesian is employed for its communicative role, and Javanese is relied for its shared identity and closeness.

Abstract

Metaphor is many times a spontaneous expression to pack a person’s feeling on a phenomenon. This is obvious in a political contest between Jokowi and Prabowo in the last presidential election in Indonesia. Both always exchange statements to respond over a thing or one to another. Their statements flower with the use of metaphors to represent and to emphasize their subjective perception. This research is a content analysis making use the texts from Indonesian media recording the statements of the two contestants. From the data source, the metaphor is selected and analyzed using theory of conceptual metaphor (Lakoff& Johnson: 1980) of which meanings are seen from CDA’s concept of Teun van Dijk (2001) and Lynne’s (2008) affective effect of metaphor. After the analysis, it was found out that the metaphor functions to emphasize the topics in question, like the importance of Indonesian unity as in “menjalin dan merawat…persaudaraan”, to distance the topics, “sedikit kesulitan”, and to evaluate positively, “kue ekononomi digital”. Both sides agree that unity is important, but they blame each other as being the culprit of the broken unity. In other issues, both sides make use of their opposing ideas to hyperbolize others’ negativity and to conceal others’ positivity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of grammatical cohesion conjunctions  in a short story book entitled The Bridge and Other Love Stories by Christine Lindop. This study focused on the forms of conjunctions, meanings, and grammatical cohesion functions by using Halliday's theory to analyze the data. The approach used in this study was descriptive qualitative to analyze every word contained in the short story entitled The Bridge and other love stories by Christine Lindop. The results of this study indicate that the forms of grammatical cohesion conjunctions contained in the short story book with that title are Additive, Adversative, Causal, and Temporal conjunctions. The meaning and function of each cohesion are 1) meaningful as a sequential connecting time, 2) shows the cause of something, 3) shows the event that contrasts with the situation, 4) shows a choice. This research can be a reference for academics for further research in the same field with different objects in the future.
