Abstract

The flipped classroom offers greater flexibility and meaningfulness in learning activities. Students have more space and time to construct their knowledge and skills freely. However, the presence of students in learning activities does not necessarily guarantee that students are actively engaged in creating their expertise and skills. This study conducts a systematic literature review to investigate effective strategies to ensure students' learning engagement in flipped classrooms and factors that hinder students' learning engagement. It was performed following the Kitchenman and Charter's rules and strategies. The review covered 47 articles that were published between 2018-2023. The significant findings indicated that effective strategies used to ensure and enhance students' learning engagement in the flipped classroom are gamification, providing immediate feedback, timely guidance, working in groups, scaffolding, peer coaching, user-friendly technology, learning videos with a short duration, assignments before in-class session, reflective-thinking strategy, self-regulated learning, and guided questions. Additionally, supporting materials for pre-class sessions, working in groups with the same students, doing the same activities repeatedly, low level of self-regulation, long duration and low quality of learning videos, students' perception toward the roles of the lecturer and lecturer's communicative skills can hinder students from engaging in learning activities. Therefore, when implementing a flipped classroom, the lecturers should facilitate and ignite students' learning needs and interests. Moreover, using user-friendly digital technology is essential to create an atmosphere that encourages students' engagement either in pre-class, in-class, or after-class.

Abstract

Modal auxiliaries, a grammatical category akin to auxiliary verbs, serve to convey notions of truth, prediction, or possibility. This study delves into the challenges encountered by students while grappling with modal verbs during the 2022/2023 academic year at junior high school. The primary objective is to find out the hurdles students face when employing modal verbs in their language acquisition journey. This research employed a mixed-methods focused on a sample group of 17 eighth-grade students. The research tools utilized included questionnaires and structured interviews. The data analysis encompassed three key stages: data reduction, data presentation, and data conclusion. From the comprehensive analysis of the data, it becomes evident that students encounter considerable difficulties when it comes to effectively using modal verbs. These challenges extend to comprehending the function, form, usage, and materials that facilitate modal learning. Upon careful consideration of the questionnaire responses and interview findings, it is apparent that students face notable obstacles in their utilization of modal verbs, particularly in understanding their functions, practical applications, linguistic forms, and the instructional resources necessary to enhance their grasp of this grammatical construct.

The scope of this study is in several factors, such as the use of LMS in blended learning, and the effectiveness of blended learning in EAP context to develop students’ motivation, communication skill, vocabulary, critical thinking and social interaction according to the students’ perception. This research utilizes a quantitative approach employing an analytical survey with an exploratory component using Likert scale questionnaire to collect the data. The population of this research is 115 students of pharmacy taking EAP course. The sample is 35 students selected using simple random sampling technique. This study reveals that blended learning is perceived positively by students in this EAP course, particularly for developing core skills and understanding the subject matter. Abstract

This research aims to identify the effect of Learning Management System (LMS) supported blended learning on students’ English proficiency in English for Academic Purpose (EAP) classroom. Previous studies have explored the broader benefits of blended learning. However, there is a lack of studies specifically investigating its impact on EAP instruction. This study aims to address this gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of LMS-supported blended learning in EAP, contributing to a deeper understanding of its potential benefits and challenges in this specialized area of language education. This research implies quasi experimental study method with one group pretest posttest experimental design. The population of this research was 138 students of pharmacy study program of Sari Mulia University academic year 2023/2024 who took EAP course divided into three classes. The sample of this research was 45 of class A students who were selected using cluster random sampling technique. The result found that LMS supported blended learning has no significant effect on students’ English mastery in EAP classroom. This indicates that main hypothesis (H1) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H0) is accepted. Nevertheless, LMS supported blended learning is still helpful and applicable in EAP instruction since the students’ mean score indicates small improvement on their English proficiency.
