Abstract

Like any other discourse, ideas regarding usury in Indonesia have evolved over time. This study is concerned with tracing that evolution and with understanding how Indonesian academics, practitioners, and laypersons view the problem. The increasing popularity of usury is then juxtaposed with emergence of anti-usury movements, of which this study identifies 14 throughout the country. Using a phenomenological approach, the study analyses these movements in order to better understand their nature and then categorises them into three classes. The first is that organised by figures affiliated with Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia; the second is initiated by Indonesia’s Salafi ulama; and the third has no clear leadership and membership and is, therefore, somewhat disorganised. The ideas espoused by the anti-usury movement are primarily disseminated via the internet and social media. This study finds that the movement is growing quickly and gaining momentum.

Abstract

Ahmad Amin is renown for his reformist ideas. His thought covers a wide range of issues. Nonetheless, little has been done to study his perspective on Sufism. This paper is aimed at filling that gap. As a historian, sociologist and philosopher, Amin has many to offer concerning how Sufism should be treated. The paper argues that like many reformists, Amin is reluctant to accept certain –notably philosophical- aspects of Sufism and regard them as baseless, useless and ahistorical. These should be abandoned as they serve nothing for the Muslim community. His intellectual project is designed to dirent Sufism as a moral –that is Ghazalian- system. But he at the same time also proposes –like Ibn Khaldun- that Sufism should be treated as a means of realising commong good (maslahah) instead of acquiring personal sanctity (karamah). Hence, his critique of Sufism is based on the synthesis between Ghazalian form of paradigm with that of Khaldunian system of thought. While Amin has not paid enough attention to Sufism in his studies, deeper look at his world-view reveals that his interest to this spiritual dimension of Islam is unrivalled

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to analyse the development of the sufistic idea in its early period by referring to the thought of Abu Bakr al-Kalabazi. It treats tasawuf not merely as codes of practices and rituals, but as a system of knowledge and episteme. The paper tries to show that what al-Kalabazi and other sufis like him have done is to expose intellectually the meaning and message of the spiritual side of Islam in a way that makes it possible to become an objective and integrated paradigm. The thought of al-Kalabazi to be more precise and is looked-upon here not as an independent paradigm but as part of the larger system of tasawuf developed over time by the sufis. Treating al- Kalabazi as a successor of Abu Nasr al-Sarraj, the paper argues that the thought of these two sufis complements each other, and that what the former has attempted to do was to fill the gap that the latter has left. The paper in other words, is interested in, 1) how the notion of epistemic continuity is reflected in the thought of al-Kalabazi, and 2) how al-Kalabazi may be understood as forming a chain within the larger intellectual tradition of tasawuf; a chain that may be regarded as new and unique in it’s own context. In this way, one may understand -it is hoped- that the process of becoming in which tasawuf is undergoing as a system of knowledge is never-ending, and that in every single sufi a transfer of discursive meaning is indeed inevitable.

Abstract

Imam al-Syafi'i has a very important role in the development of science in Islam, besides being known as a faqih (fiqh expert), Imam Syafi'i is one of the figures who are very understanding of the meanings of the Qur'an. Therefore, this study aims to find out the thoughts about the method of interpretation in the book al-Risalah. Because basically this book was written as a gift from Abdurahman bin Mahdi regarding the content of the meaning of the Qur'an. Using a qualitative approach (library research), the results show that in the book of al-Risalah, Imam Syafi'i's method of understanding the Qur'an can be found using the sources bil-Ma'tsur or bil-Riwayah, both the Qur'an , hadith, opinions of friends and the words of the tabi'in.

Abstract

The relevance of revelation and sense especially regarding the contradiction between the two is a problem that is often discussed by Muslim intellectual. Most of the scholars tend to reject the existence of a contradiction between revelation and sense, they argue that it should be so because basically they both come from the Almighty God, so it is impossible for the two to be contradictory. This of course will affect the authenticity of the resulting interpretation and will cause defects in it. Based on this, intellectual anxiety arises about how the scholars respond to this matter, which in this study will be devoted to the response of Ibn Taymiyah in his book Dar’ Ta'āruḍ al-'Aql wa al-Naql, and how its relevance to the concept of al-dakhīl (infiltration) in the interpretation of the Qur'an. This study is a literature review by examining the book Dar’ Ta'āruḍ al-'Aql wa al-Naql by Ibn Taymiyyah and several writings related to this topic. This results in an understanding that the assumptions that say there is a contradiction between revelation and sense in the book are unacceptable. Ibn Taymiyah also emphasized that although it was forced to be possible for a conflict between the two to occur, the conflict that occurred was on the status of  dalīl that was qaṭ'ī-ẓannī, not on its status as revelation and sense. The contradiction that occurs between revelation and sense can ultimately be categorized as al-dakhīl fī al-tafsīr, as one of the factors that causes the authenticity of interpretation to disappear.

Abstract

Music, in its development, follows social and cultural needs. In the Islamic world, music has long been discussed in terms of how Islamic law regulates the use of musical instruments or listening to songs. From the two opinions that allow and prohibit, Nahdlatul Ulama has long engaged in a dialectic of musical art with religious law through the provision of a platform for both containing and developing musical art. Through the approach of Sufism and historical evidence of the success of preaching through art, religious music, which is a manifestation of the transformation of musical art in the present, has become one of the effective media for spreading Islamic values among children and the general public.

Abstract

Deviation in Qur’anic interpretation is exceedingly perilous, and one of the things that harms Muslims’ faith is the advent of Ad-Dakhil in Qur’anic interpretation. Israiliyah’s narrations, particularly those that focus on historical accounts, are a frequent source of Ad-Dakhil’s influence. The underlying truths about the people’s history in the past are rediscovered in this inquiry using a qualitative methodology or library research. Muslims may also be misled about their faith due to misconceptions about the Israiliyat account in the Qur’an. As a result, they tend to accept and believe in teachings or stories that contain Khuraad and deviations.

Abstract

Contention of discourse does dominate the feature of our modern public space. But contention of value, while it is subtle and may not be discernable, is more essential. What appears at the surface is actually the result of what happens within. This paper discusses the problem of value contention in the public space, particularly by giving attention to the way that Sufism’s value may be involved in it. It brings forward multiple premises. On the one hand, it argues against the Western proposition that public space, especially in its rational and critical form, can only emerge in the Western setting. On the other, it problematizes the so-called Islamic public space that, while it is rational and critical, becomes a battlefield like a sphere to which religious values fall victim. In this whole situation -the paper argues- Sufi strategy to stay away from public space while at the same time making an internal consolidation to preserve its ontological security, is the proper way. Sufism itself became a victim of the free public space when it is involved directly in it, especially where secularism and liberalism prevail. Various new forms of Sufism, such as neo-sufism, hybrid-sufism, urban-sufism, and the like, are not expression of its ability to adapt to new situation but a manifestation of its failure to preserve its essence.
