Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of combining sholawat therapy with role-playing techniques to enhance the self-confidence of santri at Darul Arqom Islamic Boarding School Surabaya. Santri, in this context, refers to students in Islamic boarding schools. A qualitative descriptive research method involves data collection through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings revealed that sholawat therapy with role-playing techniques had a significant positive impact on Santri's self-confidence. Santri, who participated in this program, experienced increased self-confidence, more active involvement in religious activities, and positive changes in their social behavior. This study suggests that sholawat therapy with role-playing techniques is an effective approach to strengthening Santri's self-confidence in the context of religious education. It provides a foundation for further developing this combination in clinical practice and religious education.

Abstract

The transformation of Qur’anic interpretation in the modern and contemporary periods represents one of the most significant epistemological shifts in modern Islamic intellectual history. Nevertheless, existing scholarship has predominantly examined this transformation through descriptive, thematic, or biographical approaches, often overlooking the deeper relations between interpretation, discourse, power, and the historical construction of religious authority. This study aims to critically investigate the genealogy of Qur’anic interpretation from reformist exegesis to contemporary hermeneutics through Michel Foucault’s genealogical framework. Employing a qualitative critical-textual design, the research analyzes major interpretive and theoretical works of influential Muslim thinkers, including Muhammad Abduh, Rashid Riḍā, Fazlur Rahman, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, and Mohammed Arkoun. Data were examined using genealogical analysis and critical discourse analysis to identify epistemological ruptures, discursive transformations, and shifts in interpretive legitimacy across different historical periods. The findings demonstrate that the transition from reformist tafsir to contemporary hermeneutics did not emerge as a linear methodological evolution, but as a historically contingent epistemological rupture shaped by colonialism, modernization, globalization, and the encounter between Islamic scholarship and modern critical humanities. Reformist interpretation reconstructed the Qur’an as a rational and socially transformative discourse, whereas contemporary hermeneutics repositioned interpretation as a historically conditioned, discursively negotiated, and contextually produced process of meaning-making. The study further reveals that contemporary tafsir increasingly integrates interdisciplinary approaches emphasizing historicity, plurality, and critical reflexivity, thereby destabilizing singular structures of interpretive authority within modern Muslim societies. Theoretically, this research reconceptualizes Qur’anic interpretation not as a fixed theological tradition, but as a dynamic discursive formation continuously shaped by struggles over knowledge, legitimacy, and socio-political power, thereby contributing a critical genealogical perspective to contemporary global debates in Qur’anic studies and Islamic hermeneutics.

Abstract

Gender equality is a Western concept that is well applied in its culture to humanize women, for the dark history experienced by women during the middle ages which had an impact on traumatic attitudes towards men and religious statements, and with this sensitive nature, feminist groups oppose statements that are valued gender bias, especially in the holy texts, by adhering to the concept of 'gender equality' which means equal as a whole. However, the results of applying the concept of gender equality to the Qur'an state that the statement of the Qur'an and the interpretation of previous scholars' values is gender bias, especially in Q.S An Nisa': 34 regarding male leadership in the household, which is then responded by many Muslim leaders and even contemporary mufassir, one of them with the 'concept of gender harmony'. Therefore, this research will discuss how the application of the concept of gender equality to Q.S An Nisa': 34 and the response of Muslim leaders and commentators do they agree with 'gender equality', or are they against it? To answer this question, this research used a descriptive method. analysis related to the interpretation of Quraish Shihab who is a contemporary mufassir and critical thinker, thus in this study the results were obtained that in relations between men and women cannot be equalized as a whole as the concept of 'gender equality', because both have differences in nature which turns out to have been adjusted with their respective tasks such as discussing the concept of 'gender harmony'

Abstract

Deviation in Qur'anic interpretation is exceedingly perilous, and one of the things that harms Muslims' faith is the advent of Ad-Dakhil in Qur'anic interpretation. Israiliyah's narrations, particularly those that focus on historical accounts, are a frequent source of Ad-Dakhil's influence. The underlying truths about the people's history in the past are rediscovered in this inquiry using a qualitative methodology or library research. Muslims may also be misled about their faith due to misconceptions about the Israiliyat account in the Qur'an. As a result, they tend to accept and believe in teachings or stories that contain Khuraad and deviations.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenology of al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat through an interpretation of the phrase “Anā al-Ḥaqq” in the context of the contemporary spiritual crisis. The main research questions include: how al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat is understood as a transformation of mystical consciousness, how “Anā al-Ḥaqq” is interpreted phenomenologically, and how this experience is relevant in addressing the spiritual crisis of modern humanity. This study employs a literature review method with a qualitative-philosophical approach, utilizing phenomenological analysis of consciousness and textual readings of al-Hallaj’s primary sources, particularly Kitāb al-Ṭawāsīn, supported by contemporary academic studies. The results of the study indicate that al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat is a spiritual experience characterized by tazkiyah, fanā’, baqā’, and tajallī, thereby shifting the center of consciousness from the empirical ego toward Divine Presence. Within this framework, “Anā al-Ḥaqq” should not be understood as an ontological identity claim between humanity and God, but rather as a linguistic testimony to a consciousness that has transcended the subject–object duality. A phenomenological analysis reveals that the “Ana” in this expression is not al-Hallaj’s biographical self, but a subject that has undergone the dissolution of the ego and appears as an atsar (trace) of al-Haqq. This finding affirms that al-Hallaj’s Sufism is not only significant as a classical mystical legacy but also relevant as a spiritual paradigm capable of addressing the crisis of meaning, the formalization of religion, and the existential alienation of contemporary humanity. Thus, this article contributes to bridging classical Sufism, the phenomenology of religion, and the problems of modern spirituality through a more textual, philosophical, and contextual reading.

Abstract

This study critically examines the contrasting perspectives of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Rushd on the legitimacy of rational interpretation in Islam. Employing a qualitative method with comparative textual analysis, the research explores their methodologies, intellectual justifications, and critiques of opposing views. Ibn Taymiyyah advocates a literalist approach, emphasizing strict adherence to textual sources and rejecting allegorical interpretation (ta'wil), while Ibn Rushd harmonizes reason and revelation, endorsing ta'wil for philosophical inquiry. The findings highlight their epistemological divergences and convergences, offering insights into the historical dynamics of Islamic thought and the ongoing tension between textualism and rationalism. This study underscores the relevance of their debates in contemporary discussions on interpreting sacred texts.
