Abstract

This study investigates the improvement of using songs by Bruno Mars as instructional media to enhance listening skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners at the senior high school level. The research employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 29 Grade X students selected through criterion-based purposive sampling. The instrument consisted of an objective listening comprehension test measuring word recognition, listening for specific information, and general comprehension. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and a paired-sample t-test. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students’ listening performance, with the mean score increasing from 60.07 in the pre-test to 80.52 in the post-test. The paired-sample t-test result (t(28) = 14.024, p < 0.05) indicates a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, confirming the effectiveness of song-based instruction. The improvement is theoretically supported by Krashen’s Language Acquisition Theory, particularly the concepts of comprehensible input and affective filter, as well as bottom-up and top-down listening processes. The consistent exposure to the English in Bruno Mars songs contributed to enhanced phonological awareness and accent familiarity, which are essential components in EFL listening development. These findings suggest that accent-aligned popular songs, when integrated with structured listening activities, can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to improve students’ listening comprehension in secondary-level EFL classrooms.

Abstract

School committees play a strategic role in community-based educational governance. However, many school committees still lack a comprehensive understanding of their roles, functions, and mechanisms for building partnerships with schools and the wider community. This community service program aimed to empower school committee members through training in institutional management and school-community partnership strategies. The activity was conducted at SD Negeri Jatingaleh 01 in Semarang City, representing the Candisari District area. The approach employed was Participatory Action Learning (PAL) and Capacity Building, comprising several stages: needs assessment, training, assistance in preparing annual work plans, and the formation of a school-community partnership forum. The results showed a significant improvement in the understanding and skills of school committee members, the successful development of annual work programs, and the implementation of collaborative school-community initiatives. This intervention aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The program is recommended for replication in other school clusters with policy support from local governments)

Abstract

ABSTRACT The ability of tour guides to use contextual, communicative, and discourse-based English remains limited, resulting in information delivery that has not yet been able to create meaningful tourism experiences for international tourists in a professional, adaptive manner oriented toward the needs of today’s global travelers. This program aims to enhance tour guides’ competencies in integrating tourism discourse, storytelling, and English tourism terminology as effective communication strategies in the global tourism era. The PKM employed interactive training, guiding simulations, field practice at tourist sites, and continuous mentoring as its main methods. The implementation stages included needs analysis, training on tourism discourse and storytelling concepts, practice in using English tourism terminology, and evaluation and reflection. The results indicate significant improvements in tour guides’ confidence, communicative competence, and narrative skills in conveying cultural, historical, and local uniqueness information in a more coherent and engaging manner. The main conclusion is that a discourse-based teaching approach is effective in strengthening tour guides’ communicative competence and contributes to enhancing the image of community-based tourist destinations in a sustainable way.
