Abstract

Studies have suggested that video-based listening activities using visual and auditory cues can be an effective learning tool to help students having issues with listening skills. This study examined the impact of video-based listening exercises on the listening comprehension skills of 21 fifth-grade students, with a focus on the identification of specific facts. The study employed an action research method, incorporating pre- and post-tests, Likert-scale questionnaires, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) talks to evaluate students' progress and perceptions. The intervention was conducted over four weeks through four classroom sessions. The results showed that the intervention made a significant difference in how well pupils understood what they heard. The score on the pre-intervention test went from 8.79 to 9.37 out of 10 on the post-test, demonstrating the improvement of students’ understanding on  fast speech and small details. Students reported that video-based tasks were fun and engaging and the audio-visual materials enhanched their focus, confidence, and enjoyment in learning. The results show that video-based listening exercises are effective for EFL learners and should be used more widely to help them develop their listening abilities and improve language learning experiences.

Abstract

This study examines the film Nomadland through the lens of Karl Marx’s Marxist theory, focusing on the dynamics of social class, economic exploitation, and class conflict represented in its narrative. The research seeks to uncover how social transformations affect both primary and secondary characters, while also assessing the relevance of Marxist theory in the context of contemporary society. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis highlights the portrayal of social issues and their influence on the characters’ lives. The findings reveal two central issues from a Marxist perspective: social class injustice and labor exploitation, as reflected in the film’s narrative, dialogue, and characterization. Moreover, the study identifies two significant consequences: alienation—both self-alienation and labor alienation—and the lived experience of modern nomadic life.

Abstract

Sexual violence against adolescent girls is an ongoing human rights issue. Survivors' memoirs, published digitally, are shaping public discourse on grooming and gender-based violence in Indonesia. However, Aurelie Moeremans's work, Broken Strings: Fragments of a Stolen Youth (2025), has not yet received in-depth, sustained literary analysis. This article examines how gender-based violence is constructed and conveyed through narrative strategies in the memoir. The article focuses on the protagonist’s subordination within heteronormative power relations and the text’s function as an affective medium that facilitates affiliative reader engagement. Combining Judith Butler’s concept of gender performativity and Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, this study uses a descriptive-interpretive qualitative approach. It also employs a close reading of the memoir and secondary reception materials from Indonesian feminist media. The analysis reveals three interconnected dimensions: the normalization of gender-based compliance and romanticization as mechanisms of coercive control, a transition from silenced to reflective subjectivity, and narrative fragmentation, retrospection, and direct address that transform personal trauma into shared meaning. Conclusion: This memoir serves a dual function: it is both a testimony and a discursive space in which gender-based violence is critically articulated in digital form. Additionally, it fills a gap in academic research on digital memoirs by survivors in Indonesia by combining the Butler-Hirsch framework.
