Abstract

Although gender representation in Arabic textbooks has been extensively documented, little is known about it from the perspective of local textbooks. To fill this void, the present study aims to examine gender representation in Arabic textbooks at one of the most prominent Islamic Boarding Schools in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study uses a case study research design and Choiroh and Taufiq's theory (2020) to analyze data. The research findings revealed that the gender representation in that textbook encompasses stereotypes, subordination, marginalization, and double burden in the themes of time, sports professions, and patient clinics. The factors behind the emergence of gender representation were classified into internal and external factors. Internal factor is caused by being written by a female Arabic teacher, while external factor includes patriarchal culture. This research implies that teachers or instructors in Islamic boarding schools need training or workshops to discuss gender equality so that stereotyping, marginalization, and the double burden that disadvantages women can be considered and avoided.

Abstract

While a plethora of scholars have explored a growing body of research on women’s involvement in Jihad, there is still a paucity of studies addressing it using the hybridity of transitivity analysis and critical discourse analysis. The present study examined a testament left by an Indonesian woman involved in what she fallaciously called ‘Jihad’. To collect the data, the document analysis was adopted, meanwhile, Halliday and Matthiessen’s transitivity analysis (2004) and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (2003) were employed to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that the experience of the woman’s involvement in jihad was described by the dominant use of material process verbs (59.4%), followed by relational process (19%), mental process (13.5%), and verbal process (8.1%). The transitivity analysis showcases that the testament is not an average text with a religious message or instructions to deal with the left property; instead, it contains a message of the Salafi Jihadist ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which might put people’s lives in peril. The five core teachings of ISIS encapsulate the message of ideological teachings, including jihad (struggle in the context of religious war), takfiri (ex-communication), al-wala’ and al-barra’ (loyalty and disavowal for the sake of God), tauhid (unitary oneness of God), and tahkimiyah (the rule of God – both religiously and politically). The study findings implicate that we must raise awareness of all kinds of testaments left by the jihadi woman because these testaments may contain a global jihadist doctrine. With this in mind, we will not be easily persuaded to join a Salafi jihadist organization.

Abstract

Kata kunci:anak-anak prasekolah, bahasa pengasuhan, Indonesia, kesantunan linguistik, tindak tutur direktifAbstractThis researchaims to elucidate directive pre-school parenting language in Indonesia. This research adopted a case study research design. The utterances of teacher to student containing politeness and vise versa used as the main data. To collect data, observational partisipant was utilized.  Data analysis was carried out thematically and using the linguistic politeness parameter of Kunjana's directive speech (2005). This study reported that politeness markers of directive speech acts incorporate the using of politeness markers particle, such as ki, ta, ji, iyye, ya, sini in Buginesse language and politenesswords, like kinships and nicknames. Likewise, the teacher's directive speech to pre-school children is realized in the form of simple sentences, both in the form of short and long sentences. This research implied conceptual and practical implications. Conceptually, this research extends the concept 'face threatening act' of Brown and Levinson (1987), while practically, this evidence is expected to be used by school teachers to always apply polite language to their students. The use of polite language can certainly affect children's psyche and in the future they can imitate polite words conveyed to them. Keywords:directive speech act, linguistics politeness, parenting language, pre-school children, Indonesia

Abstract

The increasing concern over moral degradation among elementary school children underscores the urgent need to examine how educational materials can serve as a medium for character formation. This study investigates the moral values embedded in the Indonesian language textbook Bahasa Indonesia: Aku Bisa! for first-grade students (2023 revised edition) and examines how these values are represented through a multimodal discourse analysis approach. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, applying multimodal discourse analysis grounded in Moral Foundations Theory and the national Character Education Reinforcement framework. The research object was the entire textbook, which comprises eight thematic chapters. Data were collected by systematically identifying and documenting all verbal and visual elements within the book, including written texts, illustrations, symbols, and interactive learning activities. The findings indicate that moral values such as care, fairness, loyalty, respect for authority, and sanctity are presented contextually and integratively throughout the textbook. These align with core character education principles including religiosity, nationalism, independence, cooperation, and integrity. Narrative structures, visual representations, and participatory tasks work together to foster a holistic moral understanding among young learners. Overall, the textbook not only facilitates foundational literacy development but also plays a strategic role in character formation aligned with the Pancasila Student Profile. The study highlights the importance of incorporating multimodal design in textbook development as an effective approach to strengthening character education.

Abstract

Indonesian comedy films display humour not only as entertainment, but also as a potential for cultural identity that is difficult to capture in English subtitles, which must favour readability over cultural principles. While many studies have been conducted on humour translation in both Western and Asian contexts, Indonesian audio-visual translations are among the under-researched topics of this field of study that still require attention. This article aims to address this gap by analysing modes of humour, translation strategies and cultural references in two Indonesian comedy films entitled Kang Mak (a remake based on Pee Mak) and Modal Nekad that can be found on Netflix. The present study adopts a qualitative approach and adopts the framework of Long and Graesser (1988) humour taxonomy, Molina & Albir (2002, 2012) translation techniques and Davies strategies for cultural references (2003). It all resulted from the plethora of funny lines in Indonesian subtitles and English translations, which were later cross-checked with a focus group comprising linguists and translation experts. The findings show that the major types in both films are nonsense and offensive humour, while modulation, literal translation and adaptation are the main strategies used. This meant they negotiated the references, cultural or otherwise, that intersected with their founding and globalness, which reflected a balance between local distinctiveness and global oversight. Humour subtitling is presented as a form of cultural mediation, with pedagogical and professional implications for audiovisual translation that highlight the need for culturally-sensitive approaches in the practice of subtitling.

Abstract

While a growing body of research on translation strategy produced by novice translators have been undertaken by many scholars, there is a paucity of research on 'zina' and 'rafas' translation strategy from Arabic to Indonesian. To fill this lacuna, the present study aims to analyze novice translators strategy for rendering the words zina and rafas and why they used it. The present study adopted translation process research design and translation strategy theory proposed by Gambier (2010). The findings demonstrate that the meaning of adultery is not restricted to "sexual intercourse between a man and a woman who is not bound by a marriage contract", but also "female genitalia". Similarly, the word rafas refers to "intercourse," and also "making out" or "kissing." The novice translators discovered the meaning by employing the following four translation strategies:(1) searching and reading articles regarding the meaning of zina dan rafas through Publish or Perish dan Elicit Application, (2) downloading and reading multilingual dictionary, (3) downloading and reading monolingual dictionary, and (4) listening to lectures via YouTube. Convenience, language problems, and user satisfaction are tree factors that influence novice translator decisions to adopt the translation strategy. This study suggests that the meaning of the two words should be reviewed by utilizing annotation or addition translation techniques.
