Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The micromotor machine is one of the most frequently used tools in the fabrication of devices supporting oral and dental health. The increasing use of micromotor machines has led to a higher risk of occupational accidents. Various types of work-related accidents have been reported due to micromotor use, which hinders the achievement of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) objectives, namely creating a safe, healthy, and comfortable working environment. Occupational accidents often result from insufficient knowledge and understanding of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during practical activities. This indicates that adequate understanding and compliance with PPE usage among students are essential measures for preventing workplace accidents. Objective: To identify the use of personal protective equipment as a means of occupational safety and health in dental technology laboratories during micromotor machine operation. Case: Work-related accidents associated with the use of micromotor machines in the production of dental and oral healthcare devices include hand injuries during the fitting of fixed and removable dental prostheses, hand contact with metal during metal coping fitting, exposure of the nose and face to dust during gypsum-based model fabrication, and hand injuries caused by sandpaper during the grinding of orthodontic appliances. Conclusion: The criteria for the use of personal protective equipment as a component of occupational safety and health in micromotor machine operation in dental technology laboratories can be categorized into several types of occupational accident risks, depending on the type of product being fabricated..Keywords : dental laboratory, micromotor machine, occupational safety and health, personal protective equipment,   ABSTRAK  Latar Belakang: Mesin mikromotor adalah salah satu alat yang paling sering digunakan dalam pembuatan alat-alat yang menunjang kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Panoramic radiography is an imaging examination used to visualize the teeth and oral cavity using X-rays. This examination requires proper patient positioning and clear instructions to prevent imaging errors, such as the appearance of artifacts. Providing effective instructions can be initiated through good public speaking skills. Effective communication between radiographers and patients is essential to achieve optimal image quality. Radiographers who deliver clear instructions and explanations can assist patients in understanding the examination procedures they will undergo. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between public speaking indicators—respect, empathy, audible, clarity, and humble—and patient understanding during panoramic radiographic examinations. Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire completed by outpatients undergoing panoramic radiography. The data were then statistically analyzed using the chi-square correlation test. Results: Based on the correlation analysis between public speaking and patient understanding, among the five indicators of effective communication (respect, empathy, audible, clarity, and humble), two indicators showed a significant relationship with patient understanding (p-value < 0.05), while the remaining three indicators had p-values > 0.05, indicating no significant relationship. Conclusion: Most respondents were aged 21–30 years and were female, and they perceived radiographer communication as effective with a generally good level of patient understanding. The chi-square test results demonstrated that the clarity and humble indicators had a significant relationship with patient understanding, whereas respect, empathy, and audible showed no significant association.

Abstract

Ionising radiation from diagnostic procedures poses significant occupational risks to healthcare workers (HCWs), yet awareness remains suboptimal in many settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This cross-sectional study assessed radiation protection knowledge and awareness among 140 HCWs from inpatient, intensive care, and emergency units in Indonesia, identifying independent predictors of awareness. Knowledge was evaluated using a validated 15-item instrument (categorized as poor, acceptable, or good), while awareness was measured as a binary outcome. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s chi-square test and multivariable binary logistic regression, adhering to STROBE guidelines. The sample was predominantly female (69.3%) with bachelor’s degrees (57.1%). Overall, 46.4% demonstrated good knowledge, 48.6% acceptable, and 5.0% poor, while 68.6% were classified as aware. Multivariable analysis revealed that knowledge level was the sole independent predictor of awareness: compared to poor knowledge, acceptable knowledge significantly increased awareness odds (aOR = 3.48; 95% CI: 1.12–10.80; p = 0.031), as did good knowledge (aOR = 8.65; 95% CI: 2.10–35.60; p = 0.003). These findings confirm that radiation protection knowledge strongly and independently drives awareness among clinical staff. Consequently, healthcare institutions must prioritize continuous, evidence-based radiation safety education—particularly for personnel in high-exposure units—as the foundational strategy to effectively bridge the knowledge–awareness gap and mitigate occupational radiation risks.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health problem with a very high incidence rate. SITB data in 2014 showed that the coverage of TB cases in children was 67%, with a prevalence of 91.2% in East Java and 80.5% in Ponorogo Regency. An interview at SDN 2 Suren, Mlarak District, Ponorogo Regency, revealed that there had been a student infected with mycobacterium tuberculosis. The symptoms that appear in children with TB are often overlooked and tend to resemble other common illnesses, while risk factors such as poor nutritional status and oral health problems further worsen the child’s immune condition. Limited access to information in remote areas has led to suboptimal education about TB and the importance of child health. The community service team carried out an interactive educational program called Edutainment SI GALANG (Balanced Nutrition and Bright Teeth). The activity involved 60 participants, grades I to VI. Pre-test results showed 50% of participants had sufficient knowledge, and 28.3% had insufficient knowledge. This situation illustrates that before the education, most participants did not understand the causes, symptoms, or prevention of TB. Furthermore, post-test results showed a significant increase, with 85% of participants having good knowledge, 11.7% having sufficient knowledge, and only 3.3% having insufficient knowledge. This improvement indicates that children who initially had difficulty answering questions about the causes and symptoms of TB were able to correctly explain how TB is transmitted, how to prevent transmission, and the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene after the activity. This demonstrates that the edutainment-based educational activity successfully increased participants' absorption of the material presented.
