Abstract

CV Uniti is a company located in Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia. This company has established collaborative relationships with Vocational High Schools in Kebumen to carry out the activities of internship program/ Field Work Practices (PKL). The attendance system of internship program students in CV Uniti is still manual. This manual method is less effective because students have to take turns in filling attendance sheet, it may cause problems such as data loss or data damage, and students can manipulate their attendance. Therefore, the objective of this study was to design a web-based attendance information system to make it easier for internship program students to fill attendance and facilitate the supervisors in monitoring the student attendance and giving assessment for internship program students. The research methods included the observation of the running system in CV Uniti, interviews to the students and supervisors as well as the literature studies as the supporting data. The software development method used is prototyping consisting of listening to customers, building and repairing prototypes, and testing prototypes. The software development method used is a prototype, which consists of engaging customers, building, and improving the prototype and testing. The results of the research indicate that the internship program students attendance information system is capable of conducting the internship program activities and providing feedback. In addition to this, a computerized system can help internship program supervisor to monitor and managing students remotely.

Abstract

Learning English has become increasingly vital for informatics and information systems students, particularly as it impacts their academic and professional prospects. This study aims to explore the needs and preferences of students in these fields regarding English language instruction, highlighting the importance of tailored educational approaches. The research involves a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews with 56 students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta and Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. The findings reveal that while students generally feel "confident enough" in their English skills, their actual usage is sporadic, with most using English occasionally or seldom in daily life. Speaking practice is identified as the most beneficial activity for language learning, alongside reading scientific articles and writing. Students prefer interactive and practical learning methods, including regular speaking opportunities, constructive feedback, and collaborative activities. Despite these preferences, students face challenges such as self-confidence, low motivation, ineffective teaching methods, limited vocabulary, pronunciation issues, and grammar and reading comprehension difficulties. The study underscores the need for more engaging and contextually relevant instructional strategies, enhanced learning materials, and technology integration to better support students in mastering English for their specific academic and professional needs.

Abstract

Rapid development of digital technology has changed the educational practices, including the way students learn languages. This research aims to explore perceptions, experiences and challenges faced by the students in using handwriting as a part of multisensory learning strategy in online English class. This research employs convergent mix method whereas the data were gathered from 21 university students majoring in Information system through Likert scale questionnaire and open ended questions. The result of statistics and thematic analysis shows that most of respondents felt the cognitive benefits from handwriting, including improved memory, focus, grammar comprehension and learning engagement. Regression analysis showed that feeling comfort in handwriting has significant positive impact on memory ability; while challenges, including feeling tired and time required do not significantly reduce its cognitive benefits. This research supports multisensory learning theory (VAKT) and strengthen previous findings which showed that handwriting activates wider brain networks compared with typing. Last but not least, handwriting remains relevant in digital era and recommended to be integrated equally in online learning as a part of effective and holistic learning strategy.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the development of students' critical thinking skills through online English discussion learning activities on the Padlet platform. This study involved 130 respondents from non-English majors. The researchers collected data using an open questionnaire, which was then analyzed based on thematic data analysis. The study's results showed several factors that significantly impacted the improvement of students' critical thinking quality: interesting discussion topics that stimulate active discussion, time limits that encourage focused delivery of ideas, and vocabulary exposure that improves students' ability and fluency in expressing their opinions in English. More deeply, peer opinions in the discussion process are important in sharpening students' critical thinking skills. Various student perspectives enrich knowledge and deepen students' understanding of a discussion topic. The study results showed that several students who initially did not understand the discussion topic were enlightened and inspired to express their opinions after reading their peers' arguments. The language exposure presented in the discussion also strengthened students' ability to express their critical thinking. Overall, discussions through the Padlet platform created a conducive, comfortable and effective atmosphere supporting online English learning.
