Abstract

In this high technology era, there are various media which can be used in teaching and learning activity including English Course where students feel difficult to use at, in, and on as preposition of time and place. Lecturer can combine the conventional technique through lecturing with online video playing inside and outside the classroom as the usage of e-learning concept. This research was held to know the students’ perception of online video usage in understanding Preposition of Time and Place (At, In, On) material. Descriptive method is used by using qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were taken from literature review, whereas quantitative data were taken from students’ test and questionnaire results. The respondents are 100 students of Bina Sarana Informatika University majoring Information System who were randomly chosen. The result of this research shows that most of the students assume that online video is easily accessible and can help them review and understand the concept of Preposition of Time and Place (At, In, On).

Abstract

Industri makanan dan minuman merupakan cabang industri yang potensial. Di Indonesia, terdapat banyak sekali perusahaan yang bergerak dalam sektor industri makanan dan minuman. Agar dapat terus bertahan, perusahaan-perusahaan yang berada dalam industri ini tidak hanya dituntut untuk mampu bersaing dengan perusahaan lain yang sudah berada dalam pasar, tetapi juga dengan perusahaan potensial yang mungkin akan masuk ke dalam pasar industri. Berdasarkan paradigma Structure-Conduct-Performance, cara para pelaku usaha dalam menyikapi persaingan yang ada dalam suatu pasar industri seperti di atas akan tercermin dalam perilaku perusahaan yang pada akhirnya akan mempengaruhi kinerja perusahaan tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui struktur pasar, perilaku, dan kinerja industri makanan dan minuman di Indonesia selama 2009-2013 serta untuk menguji hubungan kausalitas antara struktur, perilaku, dan kinerja industri. Data yang digunakan merupakan data sekunder. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dan metode kuantitatif. Teknik uji hipotesis yang digunakan adalah analisis Regresi Linear Sederhana dan Regresi Linear Berganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa industri makanan dan minuman di Indonesia memiliki bentuk pasar persaingan monopolistik. Perilaku industri tercermin dalam strategi harga produk, strategi pengembangan produk, serta strategi iklan dan promosi. Kinerja industri makanan dan minuman di Indonesia tahun 2009-2013 menunjukkan tingkat profitabilitas yang normal. Struktur pasar industri terbukti berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap perilaku industri. Perilaku industri terbukti berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kinerja industri. Struktur pasar industri terbukti berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kinerja industri. Struktur pasar industri dan perilaku industri secara serentak berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kinerja industri.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the effects of grammar and vocabulary mastery on students’ reading comprehension. This research is a survey at private universities in Bekasi. The total sample of the research is 80 students. The data collection technique of grammar mastery, vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension is by conducting three sets of multiple choice tests consisting of 30 questions for each test. The data analysis technique of the research is multiple linear regression analysis. Before conducting the regression analysis, there are some prerequisite tests, among others the normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity test. The result of the research is: 1) There is a significant effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery jointly on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 2) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. Key Word: Grammar Mastery, Vocabulary Mastery, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Food and beverage industry is a sub-sector of manufacturing industry which contributes the most to GDP where the prices always increase every year.  The food and beverage industry in Indonesia has a monopolistic competition market structure where there are many companies engaged in this field and none of these companies has a market share of more than 10%. However, there are several companies that are quite well-known for their flagship brands that are very much in demand by Indonesian people, one of which is PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur, Tbk. In its business activities, each company requires some costs for advertising and promotion in order to make its products known to the public. However, as a big company that is well-known to the public, does PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur, Tbk still need vigorous advertising and promotion so that its products sold well? This research aims to know the effect of advertising and promotion costs on the sales of PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur, Tbk. The data used is secondary data. This research used descriptive and quantitative methods. The data analysis technique of the research is Simple Linear Regression. The result of this research shows that there is a significant effect of advertising and promotion costs on the sales of PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur, Tbk. In another words, as one of the big companies in food and beverage industry, PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk still needs advertising and promotion to increase the sales volume.

Abstract

In writing courses, the students tend to be more aware of technical errors in writing including the mechanics. Conversely, they tend to focus more on the idea or content of their writing when they produce papers to fulfill the assignment of non-writing courses. Whereas, the punctuation errors and misspelled words will make the meaning of the sentence ambiguous. This study aims to find out the degree of mechanics accuracy of students’ writings and what kind of mechanics mistakes mostly produced. The mechanics that were analyzed include punctuation, capitalization, spelling, italicization, and numbering of 65 writing assignments of three non-writing courses. The method used in this study was content analysis. The result of this study revealed that there were number of mechanics mistakes in students writing assignments, but those mistakes did not greatly affect readers’ understanding. The punctuation using of students’ writing assignments was 41% accurate; the capitalization using was 82% accurate; the spelling using was 83% accurate; the italicization using was 96% accurate; and the numbering using was 98% accurate.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the effect of students’ perception of using teaching media and vocabulary mastery on students’ listening skill. The method used in this research was survey with double regression technique. It was conducted at a Private Vocational School in North Jakarta. The numbers of the samples were 60 students. The researchers got the data from the questionnaire by using Likert Scale. The result of this research showed that: 1) There is a significant effect of students’ perception of teaching media and vocabulary mastery jointly on students’ listening skill; 2) There is a significant effect of students’ perception of teaching media on students’ listening skill; 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ listening skill.

Abstract

Abstract: Since young learners have special characteristics in learning a foreign language, teachers have to create an interesting method in teaching English especially vocabulary. One of the methods usually used in teaching vocabulary is Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). The objective of the research is to know how to teach vocabulary using pictures and games in the CLT method, to investigate the advantages of teaching English vocabulary through pictures and games in CLT method, as well as to investigate the problems that occurred in teaching and learning process. The method used in this study is action research with 30 participants. The researcher collected the data by having observation, conversation, and interview. In delivering materials there are three necessary elements, those are engaged, study, and activate stage. The result shows that all the students gave positive responses to the use of pictures and games in vocabulary learning. They felt that pictures and games in the CLT method could help them understand the word meaning more easily and motivate them to learn vocabulary since the classroom activities were more interesting. Besides, this method also helped the students to pronounce each word correctly. However, there are some problems, such as the students usually feel bored when they only have one discussion for a long time. When the students have never heard of the word before, the teacher must explain it to them first. Besides, the class could be crowded and noisy.

Abstract

Writing is not just production of text. It is also process of learning and trying out the ideas to choose the proper words with correct grammatical rules. The objective of the research is to know the effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery on students’ writing skill. This research used survey method with total sample of the research is 40 students. The data were collected by giving three sets of objective test as the instruments to the 40 students. The data analysis technique of the research is multiple linear regression analysis. The research findings show: 1) There is a significant effect of vocabulary and grammar mastery simultaneously on students’ writing skill. 2) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ writing skill.. 3) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery on students’ writing skill.

Abstract

In learning English as foreign language, Indonesian learners may produce errors since the structure of their first language is different with the English as the foreign language. Errors also exist when they use articles in English. The objective of the research is to know students’ understanding in using articles. Besides, this research also aims to know what type of error mostly appears in students’ writing. This research is a descriptive research combined with error analysis methodology using Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The research participants were 90 students of Bina Sarana Informatika University majoring Communication Science. The result shows that most of the students have some difficulties in using articles. The most common errors made by students are omission errors. Whereas, the second most common errors which appear in students’ writing is addition error which number is not much different with misformation errors. The least type of error which exists in students’ writing is misordering error.
