Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk membandingkan fitur-fitur nonverbal penutur asli dan penutur asing dalam public speaking. Perbedaan budaya antara kedua kelompok penutur tersebut menimbulkan perbedaan penggunaan fitur nonverbal dalam public speaking. Desain penelitian ini adalah desain deskriptif kualitatif dengan 10 subjek. 5 subjek adalah video penutur asli Bahasa Inggris dan 5 video subjek yang lain adalah video mahasiswa Jurusan D III Bahasa Inggris Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. Penutur asli menunjukkan gerakan nonverbal yang jauh lebih variatif dari penutur asing Bahasa Inggris. Penutur asli memiliki gerakan-gerakan spesifik yang mengacu pada makna yang spesifik juga. Di lain pihak, penutur asing menunjukkan gerakan nonverbal yang bersifat umum tanpa rujukan pasti pada maksud yang spesifik. Fitur nonverbal yang dicermati dikelompokkan pada gerakan kepala, gerakan badan, dan kontak mata. Kata kunci: perbandingan, nonverbal, public speaking Abstract The purpose of this research is to compare the nonverbal features of the native speakers and the non-native speakers of English in public speaking. Cultural differences between the two groups make significant differences on using the nonverbal features in public speaking. The design of this research was a descriptive-qualitative design with 10 subjects. 5 subjects were videos of 5 English native speakers and the other 5 subjects were the videos of 5 students of Diploma III English Department Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. The native speakers showed more variative nonverbal movements compared to the non-native speakers. The native speakers made specific gestures which refered to certain specific meanings. On the other hand, the non-native speakers applied general nonverbal movements without specific referents. The investigated nonverbal features were grouped into head movements, body movements, and eye contacts. Keywords: comparison, nonverbal, public speaking

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kategori istilah-istilah budaya yang terdapat pada novel Negeri 5 Menara yang diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Inggris dalam novel The Land of Five Towers dan mengetahui prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan istilah-istilah tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil analisis menunjukkan dari 75 istilah budaya dalam novel, 2 istilah atau 2.66% dari istilah-istilah tersebut bisa dikategorikan ke dalam kategori ekologi, 50 istilah atau 66.66% termasuk dalam kategori budaya material, 5 istilah atau 6.66% termasuk dalam kategori ketiga yaitu sosial budaya, 16 istilah atau 21.3% termasuk dalam kategori keempat yaitu organisasi, tradisi, aktivitas dan konsep, 2 istilah atau 6.66% termasuk dalam kategori terakhir, yaitu gerak tubuh atau kebiasaan. Sementara itu untuk prosedur penerjemahan istilah-istilah budaya tersebut, di antara dua belas prosedur dari Newmark, tujuh diantaranya digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam melakukan tugasnya. Tujuh prosedur itu adalah penerjemahan literal dengan penggunaan sebanyak 12 kali atau 16%, kesepadanan deskriptif dengan penggunaan sebanyak 9 kali atau 12%, transferensi, dengan penggunaan sebanyak 22 kali atau 29 %, kata generik, juga dengan penggunaan sebanyak 22 kali atau 29%, calque, dengan penggunaan sebanyak 1 kali atau 1.33%, penjelasan tambahan dengan penggunaan 3 kali atau 4%, couplet dengan menggunakan kata generik dan kesepadanan deskriptif sebanyak 1 kali atau 1.33%. Di samping prosedur-prosedur tersebut, terdapat pula 5 istilah budaya yang tidak diterjemahkan atau 6.66% dari keseluruhan istilah budaya.

Abstract

The aims of this research were analyzing teachers’ perception on the insertion of Balinese culture in BIPA instruction and the ways to present culture in the instruction. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to BIPA teachers in Undiksha Language Center and through interview as well as focused group discussion. The data were analysed  quantitatively by looking at the percentage of response given by teachers and qualitatively by using the method of data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the study showed that BIPA teachers support the insertion of Balinese culture in the instruction. In addition, there were found several ways to present the culture in the instruction, namely (1) presenting culture boxes in the textbook, (2) using authentic materials, (3) supporting the students to interact with native speakers and (4) presenting cultural elements through reading text and listening activities.Keywords : Balinese Culture, BIPA, Instruction

Abstract

To be able to speak properly in one language, one probably only thinks about language expressions, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and intonation, that those five components are adequate to be mastered. Yet actually, we can never put aside some other aspects in speaking, such as the role, age or status of the interlocutor, the non verbal behavior which we perform and the setting in which we are speaking. Unfortunately, nowadays it seems that not all students are fully aware of those aspects. Sometimes their speaking style does not show respect to the people whom they talk to. Now to gain their awareness of those aspects and for them to be able to speak English correctly and properly based on the circumstance, some ideas can be carried out in class, namely giving examples of formal and casual conversations, giving a few language expressions for one function which range from the more formal until the less formal, giving cued conversations with different interlocutors and settings as exercise, giving exercise of identifying proper or polite expressions and correcting utterances, and exposing students with non verbal communication which may include knowledge of cross cultural understanding. In relation to character education, those ideas will contribute to the pillar of respect, that the students should respect the people who they talk with and this is manifested in their choice of verbal and non verbal expressions.

Abstract

EMI program is an innovative program that has gained high popularity in the countries where English is a second or foreign language. This is due to the benefits that the program offers; to the students, the lecturers and the institutions. However, the program also brings up some challenges that have to be settled by all that involve.  This study investigates the lecturers’ perception on the benefits and challenges of EMI Program in a public university in North Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the lecturers who taught in EMI classes. Data triangulation was conducted by doing a semi-structured interview with three  lecturers. The study findings revealed that the most of the lecturers agreed on the benefits of EMI classes in increasing the exposures of the lecturers and students to English and opportunity in using it and improving the English skills of both the lecturers and students, as well as the students’ content learning. Regarding the institutions’ profile and internationalization, most of the lecturers agreed that EMI classes give contribution to them. In addition, most of the lecturers also perceived that EMI classes increase the lecturers’ and students’ career and study prospect. In terms of the challenges of the EMI program, most of the lecturers mostly agreed that the lecturers’ and students’ language abilities, students’ participation, EMI pedagogy, which includes the effective teaching strategies were challenges that they faced in the program implementation. However, regarding learning resources and technology used in EMI classes, most of them disagreed with the statements; meaning that they did not encounter difficulty in accessing resources and integrating the needed technology in their EMI classes

Abstract

Digital Literacy for teachers, including future teachers is one prominent and influential aspect of living in the 21st century. They need to be digitally literate to be engaged in this digital world and to prepare their students to be digitally literate too. This research aims to assess the level of the pre-service teachers’ digital literacy in one public university in Bali, Indonesia. This study was using a survey study. The participants were involving 158 pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers are students of teaching training or educational study programs, who are prepared with pedagogical content and skills to prepare them to become teachers. The instrument used in collecting the data was a 5-point-Likert-questionnaire, data triangulation a semi-structured interview with seven pre-service teachers was conducted. The questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively. The study revealed that most of the pre-service teachers reported high levels of literacy in all areas. The results of this study would be beneficial as reflections on the pre-service teachers’ digital literacy as a consideration in the institution’s regular review of the curriculum or training for the pre-service teachers.

Abstract

Guest complaints were unavoidable in the hospitality industry, requiring appropriate language functions and expressions in handling guest complaints. This research aims to identify the language functions and expressions used to handle guest complaints in emails at the New Sunari Lovina Beach Resort. It focuses on how language functions and expressions are used. It used a qualitative document study, and data was collected through identification by taking multiple samples of complaint emails from New Sunari Lovina Beach Resort. This research showed that the staff at New Sunari Lovina Beach Resort used six types of language functions in responding to guest complaint emails, such as thanking, apologizing, giving a reason, offering something, suggesting, and showing sympathy. These language functions were realised through various language expressions in the staff's responses. From 18 emails, the data were grouped into eight representative cases due to similarities in the type of complaint and staff responses. This research contributed to examining the handling of guest complaints via email at New Sunari Lovina Beach Resort.
