Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the meaning of “fatherless” in the lyrics of the song “Nina” by the Indonesian music group .Feast using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis approach. The focus of this study is to identify linguistic and symbolic signs that reflect the experience of losing a father figure, both physically and emotionally. The method used is descriptive qualitative analysis with a three-level semiotic approach: denotation, connotation, and myth. The primary data in the form of the lyrics of the song “Nina” are analyzed based on Barthes’ sign system to reveal the social construction and ideology contained in the musical text. The results of the analysis show that the song lyrics convey the reality of fatherlessness as a complex personal experience and imply a critique of patriarchal norms and modern family structures. These findings enrich the body of cultural communication studies, particularly in understanding how popular music functions as a representational space for sensitive social issues. This study contributes to connecting semiotic studies with contemporary social issues in the context of Indonesian music culture.

Abstract

This article analyses digital activism that rejects non-binary gender identities on Social Media Platform X, considering how online activity can reshape social norms and traditional values in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative methodology with a virtual ethnographic approach to observe and analyse the behaviour and interactions of social media users concerning non-binary gender issues. Data were collected through post analysis and direct observation of user tweets that formed part of ongoing online discussions. The research provides insight into how non-binary narratives are widely rejected. Findings reveal that digital activism opposing non-binary gender identities often relies on narratives rooted in traditional and religious values, reflecting a broader disapproval of non-binary gender recognition. Social media serves as a catalyst for high engagement and further reinforces the polarisation of these views.

Abstract

Abstract

The exploitation of women within religious institutions is driven by patriarchy and the manipulation of religion, resulting in sexual violence, discrimination, and systemic gender injustice. This study discusses the film Maharaj as a medium that reveals the exploitation of women and critiques patriarchal religious institutions. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with semiotic analysis. Data collection was carried out through observation and documentation. Triangulation of techniques and time was used to ensure data validity. Research findings show that the film Maharaj reveals the exploitation of women in religious institutions through visual symbolism, body gestures, and rituals such as Charan Seva, which reflect patriarchal and spiritual domination legitimized by culture. The representation of submissive and silent women becomes a marker of systemic oppression. A cultural feminist approach is used to highlight the courage of women to resist this structure. The spiral of silence theory explains the victims’ silence as a result of social and religious stigma. Karsandas Mulji appears as a symbol of resistance, opening space for discourse through media. This film acts as a form of social criticism that calls for critical awareness, justice, and gender equality. Conclusion: The film highlights the exploitation of women in religion and presents resistance as a form of social critique for gender equality.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of flexing among public university students in Medan on Instagram as part of self-presentation in digital spaces. The study uses a dramaturgical perspective to understand how flexing is displayed as a form of sharing activities, experiences, and moments that reflect lifestyle and digital identity. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective experiences of informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital observation, and content documentation from students selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using a qualitative analysis model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that flexing practices are not solely interpreted as showing off wealth or luxury, but are more commonly expressed through sharing daily activities, experiences, and selected moments on Instagram. These practices are closely related to efforts to build self-image and gain social recognition through audience responses such as likes and comments. Flexing thus becomes part of students’ self-presentation in constructing identity and negotiating social position in digital spaces.
