Abstract

Improving learning motivation, critical thinking, and Social Studies achievement remains a major concern in elementary education, particularly in efforts to implement student-centered learning. This study investigated the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with instructional videos in enhancing these three learning outcomes among fifth-grade students. A quantitative quasi-experimental approach employing a non-equivalent control group design was adopted. The participants comprised 56 students, including 27 in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. Data were obtained through a learning motivation questionnaire, a critical thinking test, and a Social Studies achievement test, all of which demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. Statistical analysis was conducted using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) after the assumptions of normality, homogeneity of variance, and homogeneity of covariance matrices had been satisfied. The findings indicated that students exposed to PBL supported by instructional videos outperformed those receiving conventional instruction across all measured variables (p < 0.05). The intervention explained 72.2% of the variance in learning motivation, 63.2% in critical thinking skills, and 74.0% in Social Studies achievement. The combination of authentic video-based problem presentation and collaborative inquiry encouraged students to investigate, discuss, and reflect more actively, leading to deeper learning experiences. These results provide empirical support for constructivist learning and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, suggesting that integrating PBL with instructional videos represents an effective instructional approach for strengthening Social Studies learning and promoting twenty-first-century competencies in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to produce valid local culture-based social studies teaching materials based on the curriculum and local cultural context and to determine the effectiveness of the developed teaching material products. The research subjects were all fourth grade students of SD Negeri 112137 Rantau Utara District. This type of research is (Research & Development). The modified 4-D development model is used, namely: define, plan, develop, and disseminate. Based on the results of the study, it shows that the teaching material products developed are valid by going through several stages of revision / improvement. The percentage of values obtained include (a) language feasibility of 77.88% (b) feasibility of material 78.41% (c) design 76.92%. The effectiveness of teaching materials is based on product trials with two phases, namely, small group evaluations and limited trials. In the small group evaluation phase the percentage was 74% and in the limited trial phase the percentage was 87%. Based on the classical percentage obtained in the first test, it does not meet the proper criteria, namely 85%. Then in the last test, it was obtained a classical percentage of 93.33%, so that it met the completeness criteria and the teaching material product had met the effectiveness indicator.

Abstract

This research is motivated by fifth-grade students' low critical thinking skills, driven by conventional one-way learning and normative teaching modules that lack local culture-based innovation. Therefore, this study aims to develop and analyze the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a Democracy Education Teaching Module based on Meuseuraya local wisdom to enhance students' critical thinking skills. The methodology employed is Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model, involving 20 fifth-grade students as field trial subjects. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and critical thinking tests. The results showed that the developed module met high validity criteria, scoring 95.2% with material experts, 88.2% with design experts, and 82% with linguists. Practicality reached 92% based on teacher responses and 99.8% based on student responses. Furthermore, the module improved students' critical thinking skills, as shown by classical completeness rising significantly from 67% to 85% and a moderate N-Gain score of 0.55. In conclusion, this module is highly feasible, practical, and effective for elementary school students. This study suggests that integrating local wisdom into teaching modules can foster active, context-based learning and strengthen critical thinking skills.
