Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop the speaking materials in Showing Care and Congratulation for the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The study was educational Research and Development (R & D). The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 30 students of SMA Negeri 20 Medan and administering interviews to the teacher. The result of the study was a set of developed teaching speaking materials based on CTL entitled “Meet and Speak” Which consists of two chapters on the topic of (1) Don’t be Sad My Friend and (2) Good Job. Each topic consists of Let’s Remember, Let’s Try, Let’s Use, Let’s Cooperate and Let’s Share. Keywords: Contextual Teaching and Learning, Supplementary, Speaking, RnD

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of rich media guided writing strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The Population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Dolok Merawan. There were two classes as the sample. The first class (X MIA 1), the experimental group consisted of 20 students, and the second class (X IS 1), the control group consisted of 20 students. The experimental group was taught by using rich media-guided writing strategy while control group was taught by using pen and paper-guided writing strategy. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the score of students in the experimental group by using rich media guided writing strategy was higher than the score of students in the control group by using pen and paper guided writing strategy, at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 38, the t-observed was 2,818 while the t-table was 2,024. Therefore, the application of rich media guided writing strategy significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Keywords: Rich Media-Guided Writing Strategy, Writing Descriptive Text.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) To investigate and explain the types of racial oppressionoccurred in the movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and 2) To describe how the charactersresisted the racial discrimination aimed to them in the movie The Autobiography of Miss JanePittman. The data are analyzed in descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this research werefrom the utterance of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman movie characters. The data were takenfrom all the utterances, including monologues, dialogues, and narrations from the script which isalready transcripted from the movie. The result of this research showed that 1) there are four types ofoppressions that happened in the movie, namely: Exploitation with a total number of 2 utterances(6.7%), Marginalization with a total number of 10 utterances (33.3%), Powerlessness with a totalnumber of 6 utterances (20%), and violence with a total number of 12 utterances (40%). 2) There arethree types of resistance that are used by the characters, namely: Acquiescence with a total number of5 utterances (31.25%), violence resistance with a total number of 4 utterances (25%), Non-ViolenceResistance with a total number of 7 utterances (43.75%),
