Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) requires long-term treatment to prevent further complications. Dietary adherence is useful for reducing the increase in blood sugar levels. However, many patients still do not adhere to the diet for various reasons, including a lack of knowledge. Nurses can provide information by carrying out their role as educators to increase patient knowledge. This study analyzed the correlation between the nurse's role as an educator and dietary adherence in type 2 DM patients. Methods: This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 112 respondents were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using the nurse's role as an educator and diet adherence questionnaires and were analyzed by the Spearman rank correlation test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The median score of the nurse's role as an educator was 63 (min-max= 40-90), and the median value of dietary adherence was 26.5 (minmax= 18-40). The Spearman Correlation test showed a significant positive correlation between the nurse's role as an educator and dietary adherence (p-value: 0.032; r: 0.203). The better the nurse's role as an educator, the higher the patient's dietary adherence. Conclusions: This study implies the importance of the nurse's role as an educator to provide appropriate health education to encourage diet compliance in type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Compliance with monitoring blood glucose levels is crucial to diabetes management. Self-monitoring behaviour of blood glucose levels can be influenced by psychosocial factors in people with T2DM, such as knowledge, coping, diabetes distress, family support, and nurse support. Objective: The study aimed to analyze psychosocial factors that influence the behaviour of self-monitoring of blood glucose levels in people with T2DM. Methods: The study was a descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The sample was T2DM patients in the Jember Regency with a sample size of 138 respondents, taken using multistage random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire (SKILLDS, Coping Scale, DDS, HDFSS, Nurse's role perception, and the SMBG questionnaire) and analyzed using a multiple linear regression test. Results The modelling results show that psychosocial factors (knowledge, coping, diabetes distress, family support, and nurse support) have a simultaneous and significant influence on the behaviour of monitoring blood glucose levels (F = 9.292; p = 0.001 < α = 0.05) with adjusted R2 = 0.232. It showed that psychosocial factors could explain the variance of behaviour monitoring blood glucose levels by 23.2%. Partially, there are three influential variables, namely coping, perception of family support, and perception of nurse support (p= 0.039; p= 0.016; and p= 0.020 < α =0.05). Better coping, family support, and nurse support could improve blood glucose monitoring. Conclusion: Psychosocial factors can affect monitoring blood glucose levels in people with T2DM. The nurse can make efforts to improve the behaviour by monitoring blood glucose levels by considering the psychosocial aspects of people with T2DM through preventive promotion efforts to improve coping, family support, and nurse support to improve self-management and quality of life of people with T2DM.

Abstract

Introduction: People who are excess weight have expanded insulin resistance and the development of high blood sugar, which drives prediabetic status and later generates diabetes mellitus. Someone can experience prediabetes for several years, but they don't know any symptoms. Ultimately, they experience health problems leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients who are overweight lack self-awareness about diabetes mellitus (DM). Objectives: This research aims to determine the relationship between self-awareness and prediabetes status in overweight patients. Method: This research uses an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. There were 84 respondents obtained from the accidental sampling technique. Data were collected from the Self Awareness Diabetes Mellitus questionnaire and random blood glucose results. Data were analyzed using Spearman rank with a significance value of 0.05. Result: The results showed a significant relationship between self-awareness about DM and prediabetes status with a negative correlation (p < 0.001; r = 0.678). This correlation means that the higher the self-awareness, the lower the respondent has prediabetes. In overweight patients, fat accumulation in the body can reduce insulin action, affecting prediabetes. Self-awareness is an attitude that someone with excess body weight must possess to prevent prediabetes. Conclusion: This study revealed the importance of increasing self-awareness and enforcing blood glucose control routinely so that someone who has entered the prediabetes category can enhance their lifestyle to stop diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) becomes a health crisis in the world. The main route of spreading COVID-19 is through the respiratory tract, but this virus also spread through extra respiratory route. This literature review aimed to describe the ocular transmission as an alternative route of COVID-19 transmission. This literature review study used sources of article obtained through ProQuest, Springer, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar with range 2019-2020 publication years and were traced using a combination of search term for ocular transmission, virus receptor, eye manifestation and COVID-19. Previous research used Experimental design, Case study, and Cross-sectional study, and published from 2019 to 2020. Then analyzed by PRISMA diagram method with four stages starting from identification, screening, eligibility, and included. 4 articles used Experimental study design, 4 articles used Cross-sectional study design, and 2 articles used case study design. This study showed that COVID-19 RNA was found on ocular (conjunctiva and cornea) in a low percentage (2.23%-24%). Patients with confirmed COVID-19 could have ocular manifestations. COVID-19 enter the human body through the eye by spike protein binds to eye receptors that are: ACE2, CD147/Basigin/EMMPRIN, TMPRSS2, ANPEP and AGTR2. Then this virus transferred to the respiratory tract through the nasolacrimal duct. The study showed that ocular transmission can be an alternative route of COVID-19 transmission even with a low percentage level, so it is important for health worker to wear eye protector.
