Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that requires continuous self-care. Education by nurses can support self-care behavior of patients with type 2 DM. Good knowledge affects self-care of type 2 diabetes patients so that metabolic control can be achieved. This study aimed to identify the correlation between the role of nurse as educator and self-care behaviour in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This research applied a descriptive analytic design with cross sectional approach. A total of 63 respondents were enrolled in this study by using consecutive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted by administering questionnaires of nurse role as educator and Summary of Diabetes Self Care Activities (SDSCA). Data were analyzed by using Spearman correlation test with significance level of 0.05. The result showed that the mean value of nurse role and self-care behaviour was 59.84 and 3.79 respectively. The p value was 0.000 (p<0.05) with the correlation coefficient (r) of 0.851. It indicates that there was a significant correlation between nurse role as educator and self-care behaviour in patients with type 2 DM. The correlation was strong and positive which means the better the nurse's role as educator the better the patient's self-care behaviour. The education gained by the patients can affect the motivation to perform self-care behaviour. This study suggests the importance of nurse role in providing education in type 2 diabetes patients to optimize self-care behaviour.

Abstract

Hypoglycemia is a complication of diabetes that causes unpleasant symptoms and fear for recurrence. This fear can influence diabetes management and patient metabolic control. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between fear of hypoglycemia and self-management of type 2 DM patients at dr. Soebandi Jember general hospital. The fear of hypoglycemia variable was measured using the Fear of Hypoglycemia Scale questionnaire (FH-15) and the variable of diabetes self-management was measured by the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ). The sample was 84 respondents that recruited using consecutive sampling method. Data was analyzed using the Spearman correlation test with α = 0.05. The results showed that patients did not experience fear of hypoglycemia (78.6%) and self-management of diabetic patients showed a good category (77.4%). There is a significant and positive correlation between the two variables (p-value = 0.012 and r = 0.272) which means that the more fearful the patient the more self-management gets worse, and conversely the less afraid of the patient the better self-management of diabetes. Family involvement is support for patients in controlling their fears, recognizing signs of hypoglycemia and as a reminder in managing proper diabetes. Diet control is an indicator of diabetes management that must be considered for patients to improve their health status by optimizing nutrition to prevent recurrent hypoglycemia.

Abstract

The condition of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the emergence of feelings of anxiety, distress, and stress. One of the impacts of COVID-19 on mental health is the emergence of self-stigma in patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Self-stigma can give rise to negative attitudes in themselves over their condition. This study is aimed to describe the self-stigma incidence in post-COVID-19 patients in Kaliwates Subdistrict. This research design was descriptive quantitative with 86 post-COVID-19 patient respondents domiciled in Kaliwates Subdistrict determined by purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted by the Self Stigma Scale (SSS) questionnaire. The results showed that the median value of self-stigma was 30.50 with a minimum value of 0 and a maximum value of 56. A total of 14 people had a total score of 0 which means that 14 respondents (16%) did not experience self-stigma, while 72 others (84%) felt the existence of self-stigma with a different total score. This research is important to detect self-stigma to support the recovery process of post- COVID-19 patients. Nurses are expected to be able to carry out the further follow-up, act as counselors and provide interventions such as cognitive therapy for post-covid-19 patients who experience self-stigma.
