Abstract

Adapting a horror podcast into a feature film raises issues related to differences in audience interpretation of media messages, particularly in the representation of the theme of blind love shown in horror films. The differences in characteristics between audio and visuals have the potential to produce diverse interpretations, so audience interpretation requires further study. This study aims to analyze audience interpretation of the representation of blind love in the film Do You See What I See: “First Love” (2024), adapted from a horror podcast of the same title. The focus of the research is directed at the audience's position in the message decoding process based on media communication theory. This study uses a qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's reception analysis method through the encoding-decoding framework. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with three informants who are both podcast listeners and film viewers, supported by participant observation and documentation. Data analysis techniques used thematic analysis to group audience interpretations into dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional categories, and strengthened by triangulation of sources and techniques. The results show that audiences interpret blind love as a form of emotional attachment that blocks rationality and has the potential to cause negative impacts. One informant held a dominant-hegemonic position, accepting the film's moral message in its entirety, while two informants held a negotiated position, negotiating meaning based on their aesthetic experience, professional background, and preference for the horror genre. These findings indicate that audiences actively interpret media messages and that meaning is not accepted in isolation but rather is shaped through a process of negotiation based on the audience's social background and experiences.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the cross-media communication strategy employed by the Creative Team of the Public Communication and Information Services Bureau (KLI) of Indonesia's Ministry of Finance in delivering fiscal policy information via Instagram. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and case study method, the research analyzes two types of visual content—namely the caricature “APBN Bisa Yura” and the video “Rapor Bulanan #UangKita.” The focus lies on examining the pre-production to post-production stages, and how complex policy narratives are transformed into accessible, visually engaging formats that are algorithmically adaptive and psychologically resonant with digital audiences. Findings indicate that the effectiveness of content does not solely depend on visual aesthetics or engagement metrics, but on the integration of mini-research, strategic visual element selection, and systematic use of platform insights. The results demonstrate that institutional visual communication has evolved into a complex, data-driven creative process, where public policy meaning is constructed and distributed across multiple media platforms. This research contributes novelty in three major aspects: (1) a focus on internal governmental actors in developing visual communication strategies; (2) the application of data and algorithm-driven approaches within institutional creative workflows; and (3) a deep examination of the full visual content production cycle within a governmental context. Moreover, the findings affirm that the Ministry of Finance’s visual communication practices are deeply shaped by mediatization—the integration of media logic into institutional processes—as a strategic response to a highly visual and competitive public communication landscape.

Abstract

Abstract

As technology evolves, so do the concerns about children’s dependency on gadgets and the potential behavioral issues, such as aggression, that arise when devices are restricted. This research explores how digital media and technology impact parent-child relationships in the modern age, focusing on how parents manage their children's use of technology. By adopting a qualitative approach, this research examines the phenomenon of Intimate Surveillance, which describes how parents balance monitoring and guiding their children in the digital world with a focus on love and care, rather than authoritarian control. In this era, digital parenting requires a shift from traditional control toward understanding how children form their identities, values, and meaning through interactions in the digital space. The study highlights the complexities faced by parents in navigating the digital landscape, as they seek to maintain a balance between freedom and discipline. The findings emphasize that parents are no longer just authorities but partners in guiding their children’s digital experiences. The concept of Intimate Surveillance shows how parents act as both protectors and facilitators, helping children make responsible decisions in the digital world. The research underscores the importance of open communication, emotional support, and digital literacy as essential components of modern parenting. As children grow and engage more with technology, parents must adapt, ensuring that they foster a healthy, balanced relationship with technology that supports their children’s development while minimizing risks like addiction or exposure to inappropriate content.

Abstract

Amid the pressure of digitalization and a lack of structural support, community radio in Indonesia is struggling to survive as a voice space for citizens. This study examines the sustainability strategy of community radio that is still active and adaptive in the midst of the challenges of the times, namely Radio Bamba (Balaraja). Radio Bamba is a representation of an alternative form of community-based media that relies on the values of participation, solidarity, and local culture. Through a qualitative approach with in-depth interview techniques with managers, broadcasters, active listeners, and representatives of the Indonesian Community Radio Network (JRKI), this study found that adaptation to social media was carried out in a contextual and gradual manner. Radio Bamba, with its network of young managers and a digital entertainment approach, leverages channels such as YouTube and WhatsApp to expand participation. Regulatory pressures and limited resources have led to the emergence of defensive strategies that are informal, but still ethical according to community standards. These findings show that the resilience of community radio is not only in its technological capacity, but in its social power and long-term commitment that grows from affective relationships with citizens. By placing social media as a bridge, not a destination, community radio still has a meaningful living space amidst an increasingly automated media landscape.
