Abstract

The livelihoods of farmers in developing countries are often associated with the existence of forests, especially agroforestry. The dynamics of agroforestry and livelihoods could not be separated from the political context and developments in Indonesia. In this paper, the dynamics of Sustainable Livelihood Assets (SLA) owned by smallholder farmers are explored using three political sequences, namely the New Order Era, the Reform Era, and the Post-Reform Era. The result showed that the development of agroforestry in Gunungkidul had been primarily influenced by political initiatives that have a connection with vegetation coverage, livelihood assets, and species composition in the systems. The livelihoods possessed by farmers have been relatively sustainable during the past five decades; only a slight change could be observed in the ownership of capital. The political initiatives have been an enabling environment for agroforestry development that support sustainable livelihoods. The study recommends that the socio-political culture needs to consider the traditional agroforestry system in order to sustain the livelihoods of the people.

Abstract

Biotilik is an uncomplicated method to monitor the stream quality and can be handled communally with the help of information technology. However, involving community in a monitoring, especially those based on applications, is a challenge that requires a comprehensive approach. Therefore, this research was conducted to measure how deep the community can be involved and the significancy of the community services. A collaborative approach has been done, starts with activity planning, mobile app developing, introducing the app to the community, until doing some collaborative regular monitoring activities through biomonitoring workshops. The communities involved in this study include KPLS, Waterforum Kalijogo, and the Entomology Study Group. The results show that mobile applications are successfully created and adopted by the community, although there are some community members who have difficulty accessing them, especially senior citizens. Biomonitoring workshops were conducted several times along with measurements of community knowledge and skills before and after the workshop. The result shows that the change in knowledge was not statistically significant because the public was already familiar with biomonitoring.  Changes in skills occurred in this study because the community conducted biomonitoring workshops for some time and was assisted by mobile applications.

Abstract

River water quality could be determined by understanding the capacity of pollutants in a water body. Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) is one of the fuzzy clustering methods for determining river water quality by measuring water quality parameters, that is, dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved solids (TDS). The FCM algorithm is an effective fuzzy clustering algorithm for grouping data but often produces local and inconsistent optimal solutions due to the partition matrix's random initialisation process.  Therefore, this study proposes to modify the FCM algorithm to be precise in the partition matrix initialisation process using several distance concepts. The purpose of the proposed algorithm modification is to get more consistent FCM clustering results and minimise stop iterations. The validation process for the clustering results uses the FCM algorithm, and the FCM modification algorithm uses three parameters, namely the Partition Coefficient Index (PCI), Partition Entropy Index (PEI) and Silhouette Score (SS). The experiments were conducted with three replications and using various distance concepts. The results showed that the number of iterations stopped in the FCM algorithm has different values for PCI, PEI, SS, and stop iterations and objective functions in each trial. On the contrary, the FCM modification algorithm has consistent PCI, PEI, and SS values, and the number of iterations stops with fewer iterations. Therefore, the modified algorithm for initialising the partition matrix can be used in the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm.

Abstract

Research on riparian vegetation and ecosystem services perception is essential to encourage community involvement in river area management. Therefore, this study aims to examine the composition of riparian vegetation along the upper Gajahwong River and assess local community perceptions of the ecosystem services provided by riparian biodiversity. Vegetation composition was studied through a floristic survey using plots placed along transects at three locations; Hargobinangun, Sardonoharjo, and Minomartani. Community perception was assessed through a survey of 60 randomly selected residents from the three villages studied. Data analysis involved calculating species richness, and species diversity, and analyzing community perceptions based on response percentages. The study identified more than 70 plant species at each site, with a very high diversity index (>4). Species with high Importance Value (IV) included Ficus racemosa (3.11), Dieffenbachia seguine (4.40), and Acalypha indica (3.59). Dominant plant families included Araceae, Fabaceae, and Moraceae, which provide essential provisioning and regulating ecosystem functions. Regarding community perception, the study found that residents recognized ecosystem functions, including provisioning services, regulating services, and socio-cultural services. Their understanding of ecosystem services was influenced by cultural values, particularly Javanese traditions emphasizing the importance of nature conservation.

Abstract

Service learning in biomonitoring is urgent as it links science with community action to tackle river health issues.. This research aims to explore the application of service learning in enhancing students' knowledge and their ability to carry out river health biomonitoring projects. The study involved students in implementing the service learning curriculum through stages of planning, execution, reflection, and assessment. During the planning phase, students participated in developing the module. The results indicated that the biomonitoring module received a quality score of 3.8, with clarity of content and factual accuracy achieving the highest scores (4.0). The service learning program was conducted through the establishment of ECOFOREST groups, training sessions, and the application of action plans within the community. The effectiveness was measured using a one-group pretest-posttest design, which revealed a significant improvement in student understanding (t(22) = 2.45, p < 0.05). These findings confirm that service learning not only enhances student engagement in the community but also contributes to their technical competency development. This study addresses the gap in literature regarding service learning within more practical experiential learning frameworks in higher education. The result implies that there has been an increase of knowledge among the participants.
